Emma Bull - War For the Oaks immediately springs to mind.
So many books like that, I loved them!

OH, also, Gossamer Axe by Gael Baudino (f/f, ftw!), the Borderlands books, Tam Lin by Pamela Dean...a ton of 'buskers at the Ren Faire are actually fey' stories....

I need to reread like...all of these. :D

Simon R Green's Drinking Midnight Wine is both a love letter to this era and a slightly sarky deconstruction of it. Great book though. The mice, god, I wanted to be one of the mice.

I feel the same. She's the only one in Dune that I feel was miscast, she doesn't bring Chani to life the way the other actors did their respective characters.

Oh man this is me with so many actors! Not Zendaya for me but most actors just seem like themselves in every role I’ve seen and I just can’t get into whatever it is I’m watching. I think the problem has always existed but it’s more noticeable now because movies have thinner plots and cardboard cutout characters are the rule instead of the exception anymore.

Yeah, I get this. I've only seen her as Rue and MJ and she works for me in both those roles, but I'm not sure about her range outside of that. I think she's a fantastic actor when she's playing that kind of androgynous, artfully-scruffy, deadpan observer character, but it's hard for me to imagine her as anything else. I do think she's a good actor, so maybe she can sell other characters types. I just haven't watched enough of her stuff to know.

With that said, I honestly think we should have more respect for actors who just play one character type really, really well--especially female actors. There are male actors out there who people seem relatively content to see play different versions of one core character type over and over, without being dismissive of what they offer as an actor, but female actors hardly ever get afforded the same respect. I know, I know, what a surprise.

This isn't a dig at you, OP, you're fine. I'm speaking more generally.
