I don't know if anyone is still interested, but there's been an official statement about their stance on AI.

I'm kind of fascinated because there's people getting mad about not being able to report the fics/writers they suspect to be AI. I wonder how many would they accuse on bad writing alone (of course that's not counting the ones that would get reported for the sake of reporting someone they didn't like/false report).

IDK - if someone out-and-out says that they're posting an AI-written fic, I wouldn't have a problem with that being reportable.

My objection to AI generated fanwork (or "original" work for that matter) is related to the issue I have with people buying their cosplay. While professional costumers/people who make a living selling their cosplay work create amazing things, and I would love to squee at them in admiration and pick their brains about their handwork and creative processes, I can't do that if I complement someone on their cosplay that they purchased.

But people who can't do handwork to make stuff can at least enjoy dressing up in premade or commissioned costumes; maybe they enjoy the idea of becoming the character by roleplaying/acting, or participating in group photoshoots or whatever.

But what's there to enjoy about posting bot-created work? If the posters tell the truth that the work was AI generated, people might still read it even though some fans won't, but any compliments or comments would just be, idk, "thanks for sharing" or "cool idea," because it's not like the poster had a hand in the work beyond at most stringing prompts together.

And if they lied and claimed it was their work? Idk, maybe I'm weird but it would fucking eat at me to be praised for work that wasn't mine. Like, my work may suck but at least I put effort into it. I could see using AI for my actual paid job before I'd use it in my hobbies, because I do my job to help people sure, but also to afford my hobbies and food and shelter. I do my hobbies to create stuff, and sometimes to share it.

Literary analysis; thinking about characters and how they interact, how where/when stories are set influences that, all the thought or emotion that goes into writing... that's gone, with AI. I don't want the answer to "why did you make this choice and not that one, why did you set your AU during the Napoleonic wars and not aboard a spaceship bound for Alpha Centauri," to be "Idk it's what the language learning model spat out based on my prompt and the dataset it was trained on."

I feel like people trying to sell fic commissions are the most likely to post AI generated stuff, because for them creating and sharing work comes second to making money. And in most cases I wouldn't call AI generated content plagiarism even if it does rest on a giant pile of stolen data, but it reminds me of that story of a romance novelist who actually just plagiarized a ton of other authors instead of writing her own stuff.

I'm glad Ao3 doesn't allow fans to ask for money on the site itself, but I feel like allowing AI generated work will only make that problem worse.

Today for the first time, I couldn't see *any* image. A right-click, open image in new tab showed me a 'imgur can't display this because the image has errors' message.

I turned off my VPN and then there the images were, so...I dunno.

Yeah I saw a few threads on other sites discussing imgur in general and it seems there is a mystery glitch where if you have a VPN imgur won't work. Not sure why.

Opposite; I had this problem yesterday but today the pictures are back. Imgur going on the fritz sure is weird.

They are probably trying to something daft like force everyone to use their own IP address so they can have better user data to sell. It is probably deliberate trying to force everyone to turn off their VPNs. Same as like ho Youtube is trying to force people to turn off adblockers.

Exhausting! My parents and I had an estate sale/yard sale on Friday and Saturday, and it was hot as hell and we all overdid it and are now paying for it dearly. We made a couple hundred bucks, though. I got pushed into selling my Pokemon cards to a guy for $50 when I knew good and well they were worth much, much more and had been planning on selling on eBay, and I'm still kicking myself for it and probably will be for a long time. They weren't even out in the sale! He asked if we had any Pokemon cards and mom told him I had a whole bunch and had me practically tear apart my closet looking for them, and then I just felt too awkward to tell the guy no and I just gave in like the wimpy pushover that I am. We really could used a big sale on those cards, too! As it is between all three of us we have less than $1000 to get through the month, and that's with the money we made at the yard sale! We've got huge bills coming out soon, too. Ugh, I truly hate myself right now, I really do. Mom and I still managed to have a nice Mother's Day today all the same, though.

Rough weekend as it's the first Mother's Day without my mom - she died in January.

Not bad! Yesterday I was pretty lazy, spent most of the day watching TV and YouTube videos, read a little bit, and started to reorganize my closets, which I've needed to do for awhile.

Today I slept late and just hung around the house for awhile, then got lunch with my parents for Mother's Day, and hung out with my mom for awhile while my dad went to the gym. Now I'm back and debating whether to get some ice cream or get started on the laundry/cleaning I need to do.

I feel you on the storms! We had some and there was flash flooding here today. I don’t think anyone was trapped or anything though. But I live on a hill and the runoff from my yard devastated my neighbor’s landscaping that she has worked so hard on );
