See, this is weird to me because I frequent sci-fi and anime conventions and I would say the majority of people who go to those these days are probably in their 30s on up. Definitely at least in their 20s, because the hotel bars at those things are always packed.

I loved The Librarians! Did you see that it's coming back with new characters?

Same! I never could get into the original or Criminal Intent, and I watched Organized Crime for awhile but lost interest...I still watch SVU, though.

9-1-1: Lone Star. I actually like it better than the original (there was a time when I felt the opposite, but I feel like the original has gone way downhill, while Lone Star has gotten better, imo).

On Tumblr there're frequent discussions of this, usually precipitated by someone receiving an ask to the effect of, "What are you doing in fandom when you're over 30?", and answering, "Child, it's my peers and I writing the fics you love."

The attitude is not uncommon, and ignorant, and sad. You don't stop loving what you love because the tumblers at the US Naval Observatory keep turning over. Pity them, and be a role model for them.

I'm 63, and still drawing comic strips posted to my own website daily (with summer hiatus), and drawing the odd cartoon at Tumblr. I'm not even the oldest fan there.

Follow your bliss.

911:Lone Star is great. Angel the Series was good, though not as good as Buffy.

Top favorites would be Star Trek ones, though. DS9 and Voyager are my two favorite Trek shows.

I will say I get kind of age blind when I do anything fannish online. I think what I tend to end up liking enough to be in fandom has enough cerebral angles that the age of the fans getting involved isn't a huge priority. Right now, YouTube fandom has put me in the unique position of being among the youngest members of one YouTuber's regular fanbase and among the oldest for a completely different YouTuber. In both cases, I'm seemingly the odd one out, but no one seems to care all that much.

He only cares about profits in the book. They switched that characterization over to the lawyer. They did that because they realized the actor they picked for Hammond was too kind to pull off the completely selfish and profit-focused characterization.

If you go earlier in the day they can be cheaper.

Belated, but fuck Mother’s Day.

Voyager has always been my favorite and I've gotten such shit for it. It's always confused me, but luckily I don't care and just go on enjoying what I enjoy.

AYRT

That is as cheap as they get for a first run theater in my town.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-21 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I've often thought that there are things from some sections of fandom that sound a lot like the 'rules' my poo-brain gives me.

This is why there have been attempts at making checks and balances - to protect against it. Doesn't work so well if the fascists line up their own in the courts and key positions before electing the fascist leader though.

Other countries, however, have managed to keep their balances. I'm so jealous of those countries where some elected official pulls a stunt half as offensive and illegal as some random republican and they get sacked and arrested immediately.

Yeah, it's a nauseating holiday. It breeds entitlement in some people, which is annoying to see even from a distance. This is the one time I'm kind of glad my mom and both grandmothers are no longer alive. I don't have to deal with this obligation anymore.

Ah okay. That is around the price for very new movies. but a few weeks later they'll be quite a bit cheaper. I just saw Dungeons and Dragons in the afternoon for 9 bucks.

AYRT

We've tried parts of fascism at various points in our history, especially in the early 20th with the American Nazi party, the Japanese internment camps and, of course, the Red Scare. Some would argue we've been fascists for decades - not a traditional strong man fascism put a corporate fascism. I don't know if I agree, but by any definition we've been flirting with traditional fascism since 2016.

Florida and Texas already meet the textbook definition of a fascist state.

A failed fascist coup that doesn't deliver swift and definitive consequences is just practice for a successful one.

Re: TW : mental health stuff

I mean, there are plenty of women who also can't understand that stuff too because it doesn't happen to them.

I'm a woman and I honestly can't understand what people are talking about when they talk about having horrible cramps because I've never had anything worse than slight discomfort that goes away if I take a Tylenol.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-21 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeeep. I haven't been able to bring myself to set foot inside a cinema since the panini started. :/ I miss it but I'm just not comfortable with it now.

I'm over it and have been since my mother passed away. I don't begrudge people their happiness or celebration, but it's a little... difficult... seeing so much commercial stuff to remind people to do this or buy that for their mom.

I also suffer from slight embarrassment when people tell me happy mother's day when they know I don't have kids, but have a dog and call me a "dog mom". Please no. I love my dog and all, but it's not the same, I do not call myself her mom and... just stop. :(

That cancer thing was such a misstep. I get that it was supposed to make them cool and smart and beholden to no one but I have never and will never read Wakandan stories because of it. Like Hank Pym, one thing that wasn't supposed to be a big deal completely derailed a character. Some things are too real.

But! That ain't the MCU Wakanda and I've enjoyed watching Namor flood it. I'd watch Namor flood NYC. I'd watch Namor flood my home town. I love Namor. He's a huge jerk and everyone knows it and absolutely no one tries to prove he's perfect.

TLJ was fun as fuck, and Andor is just excellent television. I'd say, "IMO" but if AYRT is going to state their opinions like facts, then sure, let's do that.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-21 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
This is how it seems to me, too: like a lot of people want to like the new Star Wars thing and it takes them a while to admit that what they went to see and hoped to be moved by is not there.

I agree. I mean, I'm not saying this is true for any one specific person, but IMO it's definitely true as a general trend.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-21 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you're trying to take the politics and politics seriously (as in view them like you'd view real-life country) then why on Earth are you watching a Marvel movie to begin with? There are a million other movies and books in other genres that have what you want.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-21 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

Because that's what fandom does? It takes the media presented and explores it. One of those explorations is "What if this happened in real life?"
