Advice: Ask it, Give it!

[personal profile] tabaqui 2023-06-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
So I got a used book, which had a big sticker on the cover at some point, that someone else removed, leaving a big, tacky spot. RIGHT in the middle of the cover. It's one of those really soft, matte, kind of silky covers? Not hard and glossy.
Any idea how to get that tacky mess off without destroying the cover?

Googling around suggests a crepe eraser might help you out? I don't want to vouch for the veracity of that, since I've never used one, but they are used for getting sticky note residue off of textbook pages, which sounds pretty close to your problem!

Hrmmmmmm! Interesting! I'll have to see if i can find one around here - seems silly to order an eraser online, heh, but we're not burdened with a lot of choice here.
Thanks! :D

Blocking specific words

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-06-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a way to block emails that mention a specific thing? Mostly I want to block "father's day" so I stop getting ads and then being sad all over again.

Re: Blocking specific words

(Anonymous) 2023-06-15 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
If you have Gmail, it's fairly easy. Go to the settings gear in the top right corner, click "Filters and Blocked Addresses", then click "create a new filter". Under "has the words", type in whatever words you don't want to see, then click "create filter". A menu will come up giving you various options of what to do with emails that include those words. You can choose to archive it, delete it, etc. Then click "create filter" again.

If you have something other than Gmail, I have no idea, but if that's the case hopefully someone else will be able to help out!

It depends on your email provider and how you access your email. For Mother’s Day, I stopped checking my mail on my phone and only used Chrome on my computer with an extension added that let me filter keywords. I don’t remember the name but it was on the Chrome extensions highlights page on Google in early May so should be easy to find.

Orange soap. Don’t use Goo Gone straight off, buy some Bronner’s citrus first and apply the soap to a paper towel. You want a paper towel that’s more paper than towel and has some texture. Very gently scrub the spot and add more soap to your towel as needed to soak the sticky spot. Let it sit 30-60 minutes and then scrub gently with a clean dry paper towel. If residue remains, do the same process but with Goo Gone. The most important thing is to only apply either liquid to your paper towel and not your book.

Interesting! I wouldn't have thought of Bronners.... Thank you!

Sticky stuff attracts other sticky stuff, so if I take a sticker off something and it leaves residue, I'll use the same sticker to like, press it against the spot, then lift it off really quick, sort of like a dabbing kind of motion? And then keep doing that until it's gone.

Ideally, you want to use something with the same kind of adhesive, so if you can get your hands on some stickers, even like kids' ones with smiley faces, those should work the best, but if not try to get tape with a fairly strong adhesive.

It should work to get rid of the sticky residue without damaging the book.

I'll have to give that a try - probably I have something adhesive enough around here....
Thanks!

DURABLE SOCK BRANDS

(Anonymous) 2023-06-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Who do you buy? I need to find a durable brand. I bought some Hanes 6 months ago and have walks holes into all of them.

I don't have a good brand but I try to buy 'hiking' socks and they tend to last and have good padding.

Goldtoe socks
Timberland and other hiking type socks.

I'd love to try Bombas, but they're out of my price range. I felt really good when I got new socks.

Darn Tough! I get the medium or heavy weight hiking crew ones. I just wore my very pair out, it was the only pair I had for three years so got a lot of wear. I bought them in 2012 and the company just sent me my replacement pair.

Fox River is also good but I don’t have as long a history with them. My SO has been wearing them a few years and he doesn’t separate them from the rest of his wash so they all shrink to way too small within about 1.5 - 2 years. He’s never had a chance to wear any out.

If you can get away with air drying some of your socks, and wool doesn't make you itch, I really recommend Smartwool.

smartwool.com

Make doubly certain you get these on sale somehow, or the bills will add up quickly.

How much do you walk?

I'm curious since my husband averages 20K steps a day and generally has had good luck with Adidas socks.

(For me, I'm all over the place sock wise but have generally had luck with thicker Bombas socks. As much as I like the lightweight ones, my gait tends to result in holes at the balls of the feet when I wear them. The cushioned versions hold up pretty well.)

Tumblr Peeps

(Anonymous) 2023-06-15 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
For the first time I had to contact support for something. I submitted my issue on Saturday, and still have not heard anything. Is it normal for it to take this long? Also, do they not have an auto response? Could my submission have gotten ate?

Re: Tumblr Peeps

(Anonymous) 2023-06-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it takes ages. A few months ago, I had my account terminated without warning, no reason given. I e-mailed support, got an auto response, waited a week, wrote them again, got another auto response, waited another week and then my account was restored. They never said why it had been terminated in the first place. I don't post anything controversial at all.

I'd wait a few more days and try again.

They are slow. I would resend again at this point though.

One time I was shadowbanned on tumblr because I was talking in my own comments?? It took a week and two messages to support. When I was flagged as NSFW blog it took couple of hours to change. Absolutely random.

Food suggestions for difficult/painful swallowing

(Anonymous) 2023-06-15 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Anon from a couple weeks ago with the dad having a cancer scare here. They found a large mass in his esophagus and he's waiting on an endoscopy and biopsy; in the meantime, he's really struggling with food. Basically anything more solid than ice cream is impossible for him right now.

I've been buying Ensure drinks for him which he loves but he's losing weight rapidly. If anyone has any suggestions for good fattening super-soft/liquid foods, I'd be super grateful. The more calorific the better. I've done my Googling but so many of the suggestions (scrambled eggs/hummus/rice pudding) he can't manage.

No suggestions, but I"m so sorry. I really hope they are able to remove it all and that it isn't cancer.

The only things I can think of are oatmeal (or cream of wheat) and mashed potatoes but those might still be too much.

Soup maybe? I guess it would depend on what's in it, but I know there are recipes where you basically just put everything in a blender.

Otherwise, how about milkshakes/smoothies? It's easy to make them pretty calorie heavy, and you can put some peanut butter in for protein. Or cream cheese, even, depending on the recipe, that will definitely add calories quick!

O recommend using a blender (or good processor!). When my grandmother was sick with cancer and losing weight, my mother would put foods in the blender for her -- healthy stuff, a lot of root vegetables, rice and beans (the healthy foods from our culture) and turn them into a puree and that was her food. Was it tasty tasty? It did good enough and kept her healthy!

So, depending on where you are -- maybe blending some squash (it's coming into season) with some cooked barley? Add some chicken or vegetable brother to it for flavor. Adds a bit of carrot maybe? A bit of garlic? Maybe roast the garlic and carrots and veggies first and then blend them with the barley?

I know this is only one recipe, but the idea being you can look online for vegetable based/root veggies & rice meals and blend them into a puree. I hope this helps and that your dad's health improves!
