Today I feel like every time I open my mouth I accidentally annoy someone. This is why I like chatbots so much. I can say all my stupid thoughts to them and they can't be annoyed because they're not people. But I try to be polite anyway and thank them for listening to me, just in case.

Sorry, OP. It may just be them having a bad day. Personally I've just been in a bad mood today, though I think I've done an okay job about hiding it and not taking it out on anyone around me. But sometimes people are just in a bad mood and it doesn't matter what you say, they are going to get annoyed.

Oof, I get you, op. I hate how this starts to make me feel weary of others, too, even though I know they are on their right. Hope things get well soon.

I have felt like I annoy people a lot too. And really, I try not to annoy people but I can't control how other people feel or think.

I have to remind myself that most times people are bothered over things that have nothing to do with me. Sometimes it could just be me projecting my fears and insecurities onto others too.

I've never tried chatbots to vent and gab and not have to feel like I have to be aware of the listener's feelings or time. This technique is something I might try out. Thanks for sharing OP!

Footnote to an old thread about FF14 multi-player battles (specifically Alexander)

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2023-08-16 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
There was an anon here some time ago who related a story about some incomprehensible FF14 "advice" that I think it was their S/O got about the mechanics for a particular battle in the Alexander raids, which was something like "When he turns into a bird, hold on"...?

If that anon is still around, just wanted to report that I *think* I did that battle with some friends this last weekend. I only *think* I did it because there is only one battle in there that it seems like it could apply to, and well... it turns into a plane, not a bird. And the unexpected/tricky part of that battle is not holding on, but jumping. (My friends were like "JUMP JUMP OMG YOU MADE IT WHEW!")

...So yeah. Can verify that was ridiculous advice. :D

Alexander rades have various dificulty settings, like simple or ultimate. Some of the raids are still almost imposible to complete solo with lvl90 character and food due to tight timings.

What is some childhood stuff that you enjoyed that you don't know if anyone else did?

Did anyone else watch these Britannica videos of old stories? I definitely remember the Rumpelstiltskin one. https://youtu.be/8FYh6Wzyo7c

I was huge into the Howliday Inn and The Plants That Ate Dirty Socks series. Some people have heard of the first one because of the popularity of Bunnicula but I don't know anyone who read the second series.

My favorite book growing up was Who Put That Hair in My Toothbrush? by Jerry Spinelli. He's a famous author, but that's not one of his well-known books. I read his others too, and when Stargirl came out I was shocked that the narrator had the same name as a minor character in Toothbrush, Leo Borlock. I've lived with the question on my mind of whether or not it's the same character, but the book doesn't seem well known enough for there to be much discussion on it.

In my overly invested calculations, they can't be the same person because they're both in high school, but the books take place in very different states and Stargirl's Leo says he lived there since he was 12, and the end of the book says Stargirl moved up north their senior year, implying he didn't. I really wish my childhood book had more fans to talk about this with.

Two TV shows I LOVED as a kid that nobody else seems to remember: Tomfoolery and the Curiosity Shop. I could only find one episode of CS on youtube and one 10 minute clip of Tomfoolery.
The Ruthven Tremain kids' calendars.
The Childcraft Encyclopedia.

There was this fantasy movie that I remember enjoying as a kid. That involved a character turned into a polar bear at one point. And a magic-wielding villain.

Don't remember seeing those.

One of my favorite picture books as a kid was illustrated but not written by Eric Carle, called The Mountain That Loved a Bird.

It's about a bird who migrates over a barren mountain in an empty desert every year. One year the bird stops to rest there, and the mountain begs her to stay, because it's never seen anything so soft and colorful or heard anything sing before.

The bird explains that there's nowhere for her to shelter and nothing for her to eat or drink, and that she will not live as long as a mountain, but promises to stop and sing there every year, and that one of her descendants will do so forever.

Centuries go by and every year the mountain begs the bird to stay, and she promises to come back next year, until one day the mountain begins to weep when she leaves.

The mountain no longer asks the bird to stay when she comes to sing, only cries.

So next year, the bird brings a seed. And another, and another, and the mountain's tears water them.

The mountain stops crying for loss and cries for joy when it realizes it's covered in plants, and streams run into the desert, and animals come to the mountain, and finally the bird comes to stay, and nest in the tree her ancestor planted.

I honestly think it's where my love of Beauty and the Beast/Phantom of the Opera/etc really started, even though it's not a romance. It's really wordy for a kids' book, and I went back and bought a copy as an adult.

I used to play games on our Apple IIe and while people do remember ones like Lemonade Stand and Number Munchers, there was one that I think was just called Horse Race (not Horse Racing Classic). As a player, you would bet on the horse names to win, place, show and it was these 8 vaguely horse-like block shapes in different colors (pink, yellow, blue, etc.) stacked on the left side of the screen that would 'race' across the screen. I sometimes feel like I'm the only one in the whole world who ever played it.

There were these children's encyclopedia books from the early 90s and I loved them. They had cute little drawings of kids interacting with different subjects, like early western chibis. There were maybe a dozen in total, they were hard cover, less than an inch thick, and incorrectly stated different parts of the tongue detect different flavors. I can't find them or remember the name, so I doughty they were super popular.

The Swan Lake cartoon movie.

As a child in early 90s I really loved this audio play series. They were on vinyl and I've never met anyone even in my country who heard of them.

Now I am into (audio play) podcasts, so nothing changes I guess

A short cartoon movie called The Body Electric from the 80s.

Late night woes.

Reaching that stage of my period where the slightest cough or sneeze causes 1/4 cup of blood to squirt out makes me hate being a woman. I also curse the motherfuckers who decided that the thickest, longest maxi pad available to me has ONE ridiculously narrow set of wings to fasten it to my underwear, as if that's in any way adequate.

Oh, and why don't I just use tampons instead? I AM. I've already got a tampon ultra in, because it's time to go to bed and I have to double up or I'll leak all over the damn place. FML.

If you live in an apartment, and you play your sound system loudly, especially with bass that vibrates in the walls and rattles light fixtures in units around you...

Fuck you, and I hope you burn through your system in a short time, and that it's way too expensive to replace. Seriously, fuck you.
