I don't know what to tell you here. I've crossed House over with everything from South Park to Boardwalk Empire.

they're still in fashion, but the new hotness is calling them AUs instead of crossovers, lolol

Those are two completely different things...

Not according to tags! But really, the usage of "AU" here is more in line with fusion fic, I think.

To be honest, AO3 isn't really built for crossovers.
Of course its optional and helps if you have a really specific crossover in mind when looking through the tags - but I think that the popularity of crossovers was helped by the layout of FFnet, back when you had a whole section dedicated to crossovers and if you looked up your current fandom you could see the list of other fandoms that had works written up for it.

Yet another strike against AO3.

I look forward to not reading the replies trying ti justify it, or calling me a troll for having an unpopular opinion. Sorry, call-out Anon, but you go do you.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* I'm not saying that a single flaw being pointed out means that AO3 is useless.

Its great for everything else. Its perfect for explicit fics, the tagging system, excluding tags you don't want to see, the way you can write an edit fics on AO3 and so much more.

I just mean that its not made for looking through crossovers. MAYBE someday that might be a thing they do since AO3 has added things to improve the site over the years so who knows!

If I ever dare say anything remotely negative about AO3 again in future, I'll be sure to copy and paste some praises about the site just to keep your antsy ass happy anon.

AO3 is fine for crossovers. You can even specify multifandoms not just 2. You can tag for fusions. You can search for multiple fandoms and add tag searches like fusions.
And readers can choose to exclude crossovers so nobody gets angry about finding crossovers in their single fandom search.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
but...it is? at least, it's not built to discourage them.

in the taskbar for filtering searches, you can literally toggle include/exclude crossovers. you can add "crossover" as a tag to your search. I dislike them so I always exclude them but you can find them pretty easily even without having a specific canon/canon itch to add to your tag search. I honestly wish I could do more than just "exclude crossovers" because I dislike them so much and yet they're always popping up in my regular searches.

You know what, this is what I get for not over-elaborating on how I would like to see a listing of ALL the crossovers on AO3 the same way FFnet had for their crossover section.

I would actually like to see all the listing of fandoms by titles on AO3 instead of going through pages of random fics under the crossover label (and to be able to pick out specific fandoms instead of only being able to choose from the 5 most popular fandoms that get listed in the search feature).

Actually - do the AO3 team take suggestions like this or would it be something that would fuck over the site too much for it to be worth something so specific?

The problem with finding crossovers is that in fandoms like the Untamed author's tag Untamed TV with Untamed novels so it's not actually a crossover. You can exclude non crossovers but in fandoms like Untamed, DCU, Marvel it's incredibly difficult to find actual two different fandom crossovers. Mostly because of the sheer volume of works in these fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
For whatever fandom/tag/author, if you go to the Sort and Filter sidebar, under More Options, in the Crossovers pull down, you can tick 'Show only crossovers'. Or you can go to Search, Works, and in the Work Search form, under Crossovers, tick 'Only crossovers' and look through the ~1.17 million works. Some aren't true crossovers.

Am I missing something? If I go to a fandom page, then filter for "complete" and "only crossovers" -- Bingo! I thought if the author listed two (or more) fandoms, the fic was automatically classed as crossover, even if the author didn't specifically tag it that way. Is there a trick that would make finding crossovers easier?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not interested in crossovers personally, but I do remember them being pretty big many years back.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Were they beyond Superwholock?

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I love crossovers and I feel like the deeply thought out ones are still being written.

I’m not a big fan of “just smush your fave fandoms together” crossovers. There seem to be fewer of those now and I can’t say I’m sad about it.

I think a lot of the random smushing came from Anime Addventure, which is now defunct.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
There's plenty still being written in my fandoms! A lot of them are just "lol smush my two fave fandoms together" but that was always the case.

(Anonymous) 2024-04-10 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
My favorite fic ever is a massive crossover. It's not finished and might never be but what there is is so good.
