Personally I agree. Not just because she continues to profit but because she uses the continued popularity to justify her transphobia, to claim people agree with her.

For me personally, whether or not a creator/celebrity/etc. continues to profit off of something is a big part of the equation for me in whether I personally completely give them up or not. And also, the fact that she's gotten more and more and more transphobic and is doubling down and just getting more and more awful. I just can't anymore. To each their own, and I do think there is some nuance and I don't judge everyone who sticks with Potter. But I can't anymore.

She isn't using her popularity to claim people agree with her. People do agree with her. You may not, but that doesn't mean it's some myth that there are people out there who think it's right.

For one thing, this is a deep misunderstanding of what "death of the author" means. Like, it just does not mean what you think it means. For another thing, I fundamentally disagree that whether or not one engages with Harry Potter fandom is a clear signal of whether one shares transphobic beliefs. If transphobes believe that, then they are being overwhelmingly fatuously stupid. Which is to be expected of transphobes but which doesn't mean we should cater to their deep and fundamental misunderstandings of how the world works. We shouldn't cede that ground to them and affirm their belief that all Harry Potter fans are transphobes. Finally, the argument that JKR still financially benefits from the Harry Potter franchise is true but sort of besides the point, because it's very easy to be a fan of the series in a way that doesn't monetarily benefit her.

All that said, I don't really have a opinion about whether people shoild be fans of the series or not. Do whatever. I just think OP's arguments don't make sense.

I am begging people to please re-adopt the original meaning of “Death of the Author”.

Is she really funding hate groups? I see that claimed a lot but no one ever has receipts. I think she’s trash and I won’t touch her stuff anymore.
I don’t display or even have any HP stuff anymore because it was clear from the beginning that displaying that stuff can be seen allying with her. I’ve always been a safe space for my friends and it’s important to me that they know I don’t support someone who who believes they shouldn’t exist.

This woman farted out her last successful book in the latter half of the 2000s and never made anything else remotely popular that wasn't HP related - and now we must suffer the merry-go-round of discussing her sad existence as a terminally online billionaire troll.

How are we measuring success, here? The Cormoran Strike novels have been reliable bestsellers, with each earning at least $2 million. Is that at the level of Harry Potter? No; but few books are. As far as copies sold, the series is doing about as well as 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' (the former has sold about 50 million copies over 7 books; the latter has sold 38 million over 6 books). Do you consider ACOTAR to be unsuccessful?

One of my neighbors has a Harry Potter bumper sticker. My local high school had a Harry Potter-themed event recently. People who aren’t online don’t think about J.K. Rowling and transphobia, they just think about a series of mostly average books that became incredibly popular for some reason.

If this secret actually was made in earnest, then all I can say is, if being openly a fan of Harry Potter in 2024 discourages self-righteous over-steppers like you from hanging around, I see that as an added bonus.
