Are lots of people arguing that she did do something wrong? I haven't heard that, but I am pretty internet isolated these days

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The main dumb argument I see is that 'sHe dIdN't lEt jAcK oN tHe wOoD!!!!' when... she tries to pull him up and the door literally starts to sink, Jack makes the decision to stay in the water to try to save her life, but no, Rose dumb selfish evil womman because they want to hate her and the movie.

Oh, that I've totally seen, but also, I saw that they tried to have them both on there and it almost tipped over when he tried, so I just dismissed that, haha

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
And it didn't only sink, it moved a lot when they tried to get over it while they both were desperate to get safe. I love Mythbusters, but their recreation missed that part of the scene.

I just thought she should have been honest with her jerk fiancee instead of sneaking around w/Jack behind his back.

I mean, he was pretty abusive, so I can see that not working out for her

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, he was abusive - which was why she thought it'd be a great idea to fuck with him by having another man draw her naked and then tacking a "HAHA LOOK WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING" note onto the drawing.

Because that's the thing, right? She wasn't really sneaking around behind Cal's back; she was rubbing his fuckin' nose in it. Sure, she was into Jack, but she was also using him to lash out at her fiance, and the fact that she was doing that led directly to him being framed for a crime and arrested.

Yeah, she was 17, and young, and dumb, and trapped by certain social conditions. But that doesn't mean she gets a pass on being a jerk.

The context of the time period and him being an abusive twat is a pretty big part of the reason why she doesn’t do this??

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
So, in the context of the time period and him being an abusive twat, does it make sense for her to deliberately rub said twat's nose in her affair by asking her lover to draw her naked, and then leaving the drawing for him to find, along with a taunting note?

I'm surprised there's less outrage about Rose being 17, but maybe the movie is too old for people to have noticed?

Of course it's a period movie and it makes no sense, but when has that stopped people?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Who knows, maybe three hours is too long to hold the attention of antis.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Was it explicitly stated she was 17? I've never seen the movie but just from pics I had no idea she was supposed to be that young.

And honestly I'm guessing most of the jokes/hate are from people who didn't really care or watch the movie and are just going based on screen caps.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
There's a line at the beginning of the movie where one of the guys on the dive team says, "Rose DeWitt-Bukator died on the Titantic when she was 17."

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
No excuses then!

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's stated in the beginning when they are talking about Rose surviving.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
What was Jack's excuse?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO!

Man, when I watched this movie as an adult a few years ago, over 20 years after I'd last seen it, all I could think was, "oh man Jack would not be a good guy long-term." Super impulsive, can't take no for an answer, can't settle down? OMG the flags.

I remember having an issue with her spending decades with her husband and the father of her children but swanning off into the afterlife with a fling of several days, but that's because 12 year old me was a hater when it came to romance in films.

(Ngl I'm still a bit "really Rose?!" but then again I don't believe in any kind of afterlife so it realistically doesn't actually bother me if that's how you want to interpret the ending.)

But yes, I never thought she did anything wrong. She was in an abusive situation (from her mother AND her intended spouse) and took the opportunity to be free. Good for her. Not her fault everything else happened and Jack sadly died.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
It's absolutely her fault that he got arrested. Cal and what's-his-face wouldn't have done that had she not pulled the dumb stunt with the naked drawing.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
LMAO

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, maybe it wasn't the smartest idea in the world, but in no way is she responsible for the actions of another person. Whatever actions Cal chose to take are on him. This feels perilously close to saying that if she hadn't riled him up, then he wouldn't have hurt her, after all she had to have known what a terrible temper he had and how he liked to be in control, so she should have tried to be as biddable as possible to avoid that. I'm sure she knew there would be consequences. I think she was probably hoping for Cal to call off the marriage (and maybe ruin Rose's and her mother's reputations so that her mother couldn't even hope to marry her off to some other rich dick). There are a million things that Cal could have chosen to do that didn't involve the false reporting of a crime. Was it also her fault Cal was also going to have Jack killed or that he decided to try to kill them both himself? Or was that on the classist, misogynist, morally bankrupt, murderous abuser?

(Anonymous) 2024-08-06 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
no don't you understand?? rose showed spirit and a sense of confidence to her abuser and that's totally a mark against her!! she knew cal would have jack arrested for nothing and she is totally to blame for everything!! sHE GoT hIM aRrESteD

No. The point is that you don't deliberately put someone else in the middle of a situation like that, especially without letting the person in on what you're doing. That's what the issue is.

While "this man is an abusive asshole" doesn't mean, "you deserve the consequences of pushing back against him," it also doesn't mean, "anything you do to push back against him is okay." And using someone, without their knowledge, to get back at an asshole is a pretty shitty thing to do.

Oh sweetie you are so pathetic.
