It's really simple and it has nothing to do with them being "MCU haters". The reason it happens is because there's a really big financial incentive to get mad at big, prominent nerd properties for being too woke. That's it. That's the whole thing. They're not any more mad at the MCU than they are Star Wars. Plenty of them are mad about Lord of the Rings. There's just a lot of racist, bigoted fanboys out there and money to be made by catering to them.

And here I was doing it for free.

The same reason so many angry anti-woke incels are still MCU fans? I really don't think someone's opinion of a franchise is an accurate way to determine their political or social views. I've seen many a fan miss the damn mark on a series.

I'm not sure this is quite the right way around. They don't randomly become angry anti-woke incels because they hate MCU. They were always that kind of people in the first place and MCU is an easy target of a big popular franchise that sometimes has women and black people in it.

I can speak on this. There is a... crossover - not exactly one to one, but certainly a trend - for a dip in quality to be accompanied by adoption of woke elements. Sometimes it focuses on wokeness and that makes the quality dip, some times the quality dips and the wokeness is adopted as a sort of shield. Sometimes - like in the MCU - it's just a pure fucking coincidence.

And on the other side we have people who hate Disney and find wokeness to be a good excuse, or hate wokeness and use a perceived lack of quality as an excuse...

I mean there are multiple angles of intersection between inevitable drop in quality, adoption of woke ideology, people's tastes changing, people needing an excuse to be angry. It's all very complicated and there is no single unifying reason.

But with MCU? I think it started with the inevitable drop in quality - can't stay great for ever - combined with some unfathomable choices disney made to correct the downward trend.

I think there's some truth to this; there's a lot of instances where otherwise generic shows/movies/games with no other unique selling points and no outstanding writing or production quality reach for and rely on "woke" things as selling points to set themselves apart (see: Concord). Wokeness is not why that game failed, but no amount of quirky wokeness was going to save it. Overwatch has plenty of gay characters and nobody important bats an eye.

But you can say and acknowledge something like that without being anti-woke in general, or angry, or an incel, or a hater.

When OP says "angry anti-woke incels", I'd bet it boils down to fans crying that things aren't made solely for them and their taste any more.

Fair, certainly could be people like that driving the bulk of it. I can't speak for them I can only speak for my own brand of 'angry anti-woke incels'. Concord is a FINE example for me to speak on my own brand of hitlerian bigotry: I don't care that it was made, that it was woke, that it was also bad, or that it failed. Literally nothing at all to do with me, but everyone and their mum seems to have an opinion on it which is weird and I can only put it down to the 'angry anti-woke incels' you mention, because really, I don't get it. But Saints Row, which seems to have been made with the same combination of incompetence, toxic positivity, exec snowjobs, and general wokeness... THAT is where I had feelings to express. Because Concord was never for me, it was new and seeking it's own audience away from me. But Saints row? they took something I loved and twisted and ruined it. I think maybe the anti-dinsey crowd might have some of that in them somewhere rather than it just being generic incel rage.

Of course you're an anti-woke chud. Why am I not surprised that you want everyone white, cishet and preferably male.

Probably because what counts as woke to those people differs. For some it's about race, others about gender, others about sexuality, others about something as simple as characters being fat.

It's easier to say they're "anti-woke" because they're vehemently against "whatever they view as woke" which is generally taken to mean anything not cis het dynamics featuring conventionally attractive people with the man being the main character and also the hero. And also mention of any ideas that go beyond enlightened centrism counts as political.

Racist doesn't quite cover it.

NAYRT, I agree that racist doesn't cover all of it, but I do also think "anti-woke" feels a bit weak. I'd just go with "bigoted".

I see it as a euphemism. People will easily state as loud as they can that they're anti-woke because it's become acceptable to say so, people still won't so easily claim they're racist or homophobic. Also phrasing it as if racist, homophobic, etc. assholes were fighting against something that is seen as a threat makes them seem like they have the good role. So both terms, woke and anti-woke have become more widely used by those assholes, which spread to offline and online media and is now also used by people who aren't those assholes.

Plenty of people who aren’t bigoted pieces of shit hate the MCU, too.

I figure that making Vocally Hating A Specific Media Property a large feature of your online presence is not a thing that selects for well-balanced and sensible personality types. And anti-woke types? Not typically well-balanced, in addition to being assholes. I got extremely bored with the MCU and allergic to Bucky Barnes after 10,000 fics with Woobie Traumatized Bucky-Bear-Boo and loving depictions of actual trauma recovery. Nothing wrong with that if that's your jam, but it's a Sometimes Food for me, and much like peanut butter sandwiches and ramen, I can't take any of that anymore.

And what do I do about it? I backbutton. I don't watch the movies that are The Bucky Show, and I catch the other movies somewhere that isn't the theatre unless they sound really, really, really awesome and worth the Covid risk. And I only grouse about the MCU online maybe once a year.

Seriously, this. There are people who've hated the MCU since back when it was whiter than Chris Evans' backside. There are people who loved it until some plot or character twist turned them against it. There are people who are pissed off that comics canon in some spots was twisted to line up with the movie version more. There are people who just want it to stop encroaching on every other fandom.

And yeah, there are people who are so pissed off by the 5% of the franchise that could potentially be considered "woke" that they turn that into their personality. There is also a non-insignificant number of people who don't like Taylor Swift because they think she rigged the Super Bowl.

Because mysoginist, racist and other -ist assholes hate it when you change something they thought was "safe" and "sacred". They always think 'it was better in the olde days' (meaning we could say what we want without anyone daring to call us out, had more power, more priviledges, etc.) so change? A big nope. They're also just hateful jerks, period. Hating people and things is what they do best. Being vocally angry about in on social media, their backyard, right-wing and neo-nazi rallies,... is some of them's favorite pastime so any excuse to do so is a good opportunity, doesn't mean they cared about it in the first place.
