I love drag, and I love that RuPaul has made it so accessible to the masses... but I absolutely get where you're coming from, OP. With that accessibility comes the attitude among fans that you're either a bad queer or a bad ally if it's not your cup of tea.

+1

RuPaul giving us drag to the world was absolutely an important step in LGBTQ+ content and identification. In 2025? We're straddling this line of being culturally post-drag but politically "can we just not get rid of our human rights please?" Drag has its issues, but anyone regardless of gender who wants to love a sequinned gown and sky-high hair should be allowed to love it. Can we safely say that, when the shitty powers that be want to take us back to pre-Stonewall? IDK that we can.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Same. But I can't ever say I dislike drag because I'll get dogpiled and my queer card revoked.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
People call drag examining femininity? I don't get it, what's there to examine when there's a drag queen template for behavior and every single drag queen follows it?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
SA To be clear I have no issue with drag, I'm just confused what it explores when the types of femininity that appear in 99.9% of drag are so comparatively narrow and rigid and defined.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you, Anon - it’s such a fun art form and reading about it, I want to enjoy it, but when it’s all the same and just feels like it’s not even doing anything new or unusual with gender roles then what even is there. (And just typing that sentence makes me feel like a
TERF tbh, I am not a TERF, I just don’t get drag)

I’ve seen drag that I would say does that. Some people used to call it “genderfucking”. But yeah, not what I’ve seen of Drag Race.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Genderfuckery is fun, crossplay/cosplay is fun, crossdressing in general is broad and interesting... I've never seen "drag queen" stuff that isn't a very particular type of sassy ultra materialistic hyper fashion glitter catty femme performance though.

What sorts of non-sassy drag is out there? I'm way more interested in that

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Drag examines femininity in popular culture, not everyday life. It's a send up of the appearances, attitudes, and behaviors of female pop celebs and divas. I think the samey-ness of drag comes from the sad fact that there are very specific societal expectations of women in those roles.

I don't like reality TV in general so I have no interest in Drag Race because of it, lord knows I don't mention this anywhere near my online queer circles or irl ones because I'd get dragged over the coals. I appreciate drag for it's place and history in the community, but I just don't care for it?

The closest I get to enjoying it is using gif-meme's from the series as reactions.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I am interested in examining femininity. And all kinds of interesting drag and gender performances.

What I don’t like is that “sassy mean girl” persona. Or the catty competitive environment.

I was lucky enough to be at the fringes of a drag scene that wasn’t like that at all.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I mean... drag's origins are in pageantry.

you're not wrong. locally our drag scene isn't about the catty mean girl persona, but every once in a while one of the big clubs gets a national touring act that may/may not be Drag Race associated and the culture is drastically different. I'm here for our local queens doing library readings and Sunday brunch trivia, but I'm not here for RPDR-affiliated drunk/high queens doing roasts of each other. The expectation is drastically different and it shows.

OP

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the thing is, that I am interested in gender play, even though hyperfemininity isn't it for me. But I am not lucky enough to have drag scene available to me. And I find "sassy mean persona" unappealing.

(If anyone has recs that are available online, I would be much obliged)

That's fair.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for articulating what I don't like about it -- the "sassy mean girl behavior." Could never put my finger on it, but that's what bothers me most about these drag reality shows.

That said, I enjoy my local drag scene, and I've gotten hot & bothered over many a drag king. 😍

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody is obligated to enjoy drag. But I'm kinda getting the impression some of you have learned about drag exclusively through RPDR. I promise there's better stuff out there. Like even if we limit ourselves to just reality competition drag shows, Dragula is so much better. Again, if you're not interested, that's fine, just saying it's not all the same.

OP

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's not the same but
1) availability is very limited to me
2) Types that are available (to me at least) and have more exposure are RPDR types
3) I mostly know people who are into that and I am not

So I am aware that there must be variety but it's a bit of an abstract thing.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
I would be more open to it if a lot of it didn't feel like it just used the excuse of "exploring hyperfemininity in popculture" as a smokescreen for a weird specialised brand of misogyny.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
yeah. Sometimes I think that I am being paranoid and unfair and sometimes I have a feeling that this is misogynistic af

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
This this this! A lot of drag queens are gay men that don't think they're misogynist because they dress up as women. No, honey, you can still be a misogynist while you're wearing a dress and makeup.

I want everybody to have tights and the freedom to like what they like.

And also? Drag is so unappealing to me. It seems mean and shallow and I can't get over the feeling that it's a bunch of men deciding that women aren't womening properly and that men could women better. Maybe if drag kings had gotten just as big right along side it but... it didn't.

Luckily nobody has ever asked me so I can keep it to myself!

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
*rights. And tights if you want.
