Man, I love me a size difference ship. I don't have a ton but I cherish everyone. The manhandling.

I think I only notice (and hate it) due to fandom's obsession with size difference. Which is probably on me for binging too much fic and seeing it repeated endlessly. If I had just enjoyed media like a normie I would probably be fine with it.

I love canon size difference, but I'm not a fan of made-up ones because I find it silly and daft. It eeks into that part of fandom where it doesn't feel like the fans are actually into a ship on it's own merits, but are into a pair of current popular pretty things they can slap their own personalities onto.

Which to each their own but it's not what I'm interested in.

I looove size differences. Even if they don't have one in canon I will find a way to make one (i.e. heels, talking on stairs, one of them is sitting, etc etc).

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I love size differences!! My first ever ship was an elf and a dwarf. I eat that shit up. The funny thing though is that my most enduring OTP I headcanon as the exact same height, lol (they don't have canon heights and in-game models are the same model type).

size difference kink = ok you do you

all of fandom wants = NO.

in my 25+ years of experience with fandom, there are three things happening simultaneously. 1, the kink. 2, you want X, right? no we want Y, Z, and Q but no one is giving those to us so we have to take what we get. 3, you actually want Y, Z, and Q so some tiny handful of content creators are throwing you a bone and you realize that's what you want, not X no not ever.

size diff is served to us because of shitty, terrible outdated yaoi tropes of giant seme/tiny uke. a lot of people don't actually want this in any sense but the only way we can get X as top and Y as bottom is to consume this terrible tropey shit. no one is providing us X/Y as equal in height and therefore no size difference even when canon puts them at less than a cm in difference (that is less than a quarter of an inch, or in my eyes, same height).

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like there's a few things at play here:

1) the actors' actual heights
2) the characters' heights (not necessarily the same as above, and sometimes not canonically consistent)
3) scene framing - when actors of different heights work together and they want a tight closeup, tricks are often employed to get them in camera frame together (one standing on a box, one sitting, one hunched over, standing on stairs, etc.)
4) that, uh, interesting need some writers have to make either the slight height difference between the characters narratively very significant or actually increase the height difference between the characters significantly, sometimes even when it's already notable

Seems to me that people who get excited over 1" in height for human characters aren't really into body size difference at all. There are no practical difficulties to overcome; no way to describe it; no one will notice they're different or comment on it. Now, if we were talking beetles or something...

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I also do love ships where they're the same height and they can steal each other's clothes etc, but... I will say, one of my longest-running most beloved ships, the size difference is soooo gooood. One character is nine inches taller than the other, and the hand size is also... yeah. Like it makes for that visually interesting dynamic, and then you have the taller character putting himself on the shorter character's level instead of looming over him... I don't know, I just love it, like, they DO very much manhandle each other as a natural response to literally anything and everything, they're BOTH strong enough to carry each other a short distance...

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoy size difference in my ship, but ONLY if the smaller one is the top/dom. I like big burly men or tall muscly women to submit to tiny (and usually physically weak) but strong willed men/women. I'm a simple human being.

I'm not sure the fandom is that much into size difference, tough... I think a lot of juggernaut ships are between people who have similar physiques. (queer ships, anyway) IDK

(Anonymous) 2025-02-14 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)

Well, no. I don't care at all about size differences in my fandoms even though it can actually be a plot point because of canon. I don't know which corner of fandom makes it a big deal but I'm glad I'm not into it or don't know about this particular brand of silly nitpicking.

Idk about "most of fandom" although I am skeptical it's actually a majority... just some people who are really into it and vocal about it, which is fine. I will go with a canon height difference if it's present, but it's not something I'm into for itself, and I probably wouldn't go on about it a whole lot if I wrote fic for a ship that had a significant difference.

Mm. That happened with me and Bardcore with the Weeknd.

I love drag, and I love that RuPaul has made it so accessible to the masses... but I absolutely get where you're coming from, OP. With that accessibility comes the attitude among fans that you're either a bad queer or a bad ally if it's not your cup of tea.

+1
