Good News Thread

Have you received any good news lately?

I just found out my insurance will 100% cover a test I needed to get which could have been a couple thousands of dollars out of pocket. I'm kind of shocked because it is pretty crappy insurance and my copays for other recent tests have been pretty high. (Hello $500 mammogram ;_;) So yay!

My cat came through her dental surgery mostly unscathed. She had one tooth pulled and has some pain meds now, but she seems pretty good other than still somewhat groggy. Yay!

Also managed to get a client's case out of immigration court. Yay!

I was worried they were going to write off my car because I got turned into a Kia sandwich at the end of February (car is a 2013), but insurance is covering the repairs! So glad I don't need a car loan in this economy.

My follow up gynaecologist appointment was only $42 as opposed to $142 so that was a bonus yesterday. He's pleased with the implanon progress but I'm still annoyed he didn't take my wishes for a hysterectomy seriously.

Microwave Anon from Yesterday

(Anonymous) 2025-03-18 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I got a microwave today! It’s used and we haven’t had a chance to test so I hope I’m not celebrating prematurely. But it’s thanks to everyone yesterday that I found one on marketplace AND found a Panasonic that will work for us if I got scammed today. Thank you again everyone, this is a much bigger deal than I can express <3

I'm not the nonny asking for mammogram info, but I was one of the commenters who had recently gotten their first mammogram. I just got the bill, turns out I qualified for assistance and it was free. Woohoo! Because I need to shove my money at the outrageous vet bill from my cat being hospitalized. Turns out he has arthritis, which is doable, but it took $3k in testing and treatment to find it (╥﹏╥).

What's your favorite kind of vacation?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-17 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I've realized that when I go on vacations, I LOVE tourist spots. I don't want to see the "real city" or whatnot. I want to sleep in a bit every day. I want to visit at MOST two museums/tourist spot a day (near each other) that can be reached by public transit and is in a safe area. And then I want to get back to the hotel before rush hour, eat a good meal, have a couple drinks, and watch something shitty on my hotel TV before going to bed early.

Honestly, I would be happy with just a staycation but my partner enjoys seeing new places.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-17 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
In most cases, I'm far too anxious to experience "the real (place)". And if I'm in a country where I don't speak the language, I really like having someone who knows their way around with me. I prefer staying in bigger, anonymous business hotels over cute small places as well.

Relaxing, resting vacations mostly. Especially if it has a beach and/or pool. I do like some museums, especially history-themed ones. But those are usually an occasional thing. Work is so busy and stressful, I prefer downtime on vacation.

The most relaxed vacations for me are in some big city with lots of interesting culture and good public transit.

I love staying in a rented or borrowed apartment and going out every day to try food, see art, go to a play, just walk around. It feels like a good balance of scheduled and spontaneous. And I feel pretty comfortable in cities, as long as I’ve done some research and have a map. (And now smart phones make that all much easier.)

I’ve had some great rural vacations where it’s mostly about seeing beautiful natural areas. But I find I need more planning to make that work for me. And I’m a bit more nervous about ending up stranded somewhere.

After our trip to Japan 2 years ago, I realized that I'd never been on a real vacation before (as an adult anyway). I travel a lot, but conventions really aren't vacations. Sometimes it's work but most of the time it's an event. I go camping a lot but also not really a vacation when you're just sitting by a fire for two days.

So judging by that, I guess I prefer to visit places matching my interests, which may be touristy or may be way off the beaten path. I want to tailor a trip to my max enjoyment rather than check off boxes on someone else's instagram list of top ten to-dos.

I know so many people who hate having tourists come to their town or city or even country. They don’t want me in their neighborhood, looking at these aspects of their normal lives that are foreign to me.

So I feel awkward being outside of designated tourist areas. I try to be as unobtrusive as possible and not spend too much time in the “real” parts where I’d just be in the way.

Re: What's your favorite kind of vacation?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I love going to tourist spots as well, though I might go super early to avoid the crowds, and I don’t understand the IG reels that I sometimes get with people saying not to visit X because it’s crowded and to visit Y instead. If I wanna visit the Sagrada Familia or Fushimi Inari, I’m not going to be satisfied with something similar, I wanna see the actual thing.

I’m the sort of person that likes to cram in as much as possible during vacations though and I only go back to the hotel to sleep. My friends are all the opposite of me, so I usually travel alone. I do get lost a lot though, so I tend to see the “real city” without actually meaning to.

All types, just give me vacation/pet me travel.

What you described is fun. I also like seeing the "real" everyday life and immersing myself in that. I also like active vacations where I hike or bike different areas each day or multiday backpacking trips. I love history so if I get to explore ancient ruins or old crumbling castles that always makes me happy. Sometimes I just like going places and being in different environments and taking in and observing all the different plants and animals.

The one definite I can say is I am not a nightlife person. I prefer to get up early and go and be done by 5 or 6pm and have a relaxed early night in.

Amusement parks or a cruise. There are several problems with both that mean I won’t be enjoying them again any time soon.

I prefer AirBnB type places, or places that are basically a small apartment with its own kitchen and a small fridge. I like visiting local shops and groceries to pick up stuff for breakfast (baguettes and good butter while in France, delicious whole milk yogurts with fruit) and snacks and just see what's different. I like hitting one museum per day, but leisurely. Might hit a tourist spot if I have time and energy, with attention paid towards tracking down nice places to eat. Doesn't have to be expensive or fancy, but I like good food and trying local specialties.

I like a mix of city stuff for the museums and historical sites, and country for beautiful landscapes and peace and quiet.

Re: What's your favorite kind of vacation?

It really depends where I am. In the states I tend to just stick to the tourist spots because the “real” city has all the same stuff as every city and most towns. But in Europe I do a mix of touristy and “real” city touring. I love museums and castles and I also love local restaurants.

But I haven’t been on that kind of vacation since early 2019.

My post pandemic vacations have all been outdoor adventures. My favorite of those so far was canoeing in the Boundary Waters. Runner up is the week I spent in a log cabin with just my dogs and some books.

I haven't traveled a lot so my experiences are a bit limited.

I am also someone who prefers more touristy areas in a big city where I can stay in a big comfy hotel catered more to business type guests. I like that a lot of the city is walkable, there are easy accesses to public transit, and there are usually plenty of museums, libraries and parks to walk through.
Not the biggest fan of shopping centers because most places have the same shops and I can't afford the upscale places. Also, I can't just buy a bunch of shit and go home with them, I have to take into consideration the baggage and flight home.
I also like waking up not too early but not too late (I don't really care about continental breakfasts in hotels; I like discovering cafes in the city and I usually eat a light breakfast). I like to aim for returning to the hotel before dinner to rest, and then depending on how I feel I will either dine in (room service or online ordering takeout) or go to a place nearby for dinner.
Not a late night out person.

I also love staying home and not doing much of anything. Waking up whenever I want.

Most of my trips have been solo and honestly I love it!
I enjoyed the trips with friends and family, but I was more stressed when with other people than alone.
I know there are some trips I would like to do with company, but in general solo trips are my preference.

I also like to travel for a concert! A good excuse to visit a new city, and it's fun to have something to be excited for.

Nonny from the other day, with a comment secret about how all modern TV shows with male-centric casts are now promoting female-centric values.

I hope they show up when their secret is posted. I want to know what the hell they’re talking about, whether I agree or not.

A bunch of [X] is my favorite movie/book/artist make me want to ask... have you watched/read/listened to many things? Was this the book your dad read to you before bed? Did you meet the love of your life at this concert? I can understand liking and enjoying mediocre entertainment but I'll never understand it being a "favorite."

Sort of based on 5

(Anonymous) 2025-03-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
What's your favorite "this actor is clearly playing this character like they're in a completely different genre from everyone else in the movie" role?

Mine is either Michael Sheen in the Twilight movies or Gary Oldman in The Hitman's Bodyguard.

Re: Sort of based on 5

I love the Much Ado About Nothing from the 90s. And most of the cast is on the same page.

Then there’s Keanu Reeves, seemingly struggling with the Shakespeare and turning in a very emotionally flat performance (which kinda sorta works with that villain character, imho).

And then there’s Michael Keaton, playing the comic relief in these scenes mostly by himself, and doing it in such a weird way. Kind of “Shakespearean comic idiot by way of a less sinister Beetlejuice”? Not necessarily bad, but very odd.

I want sleep but I also want to read my book

(Anonymous) 2025-03-18 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
The struggle.

Do you have a good sleep schedule? If I start ignoring my sleep schedule and routines that is one of my "mental health is in decline" red flags. I am usually in bed by 9pm, lights out at 10pm at the latest, and up at 5am.
