Anyone in the loop with DW news?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-01 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone got the scoop on if DW is ever going to fix the captcha issue? I can barely comment here anymore because of it.

It doesn’t seem like they’re working on it tbh. I visit FS on my phone and usually have to switch browsers to get around the broken captcha.

fandom tagging

(Anonymous) 2025-07-01 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
TW: noncon and rape mention but not really directly about those topics at all

An anon yesterday said that fandom supposedly tags noncon for "porn" and rape for "serious treatment" in a story and sounded like they believed this was a generally accepted split.

Is that true for your fandoms? I've never seen this distinction made before. Is it a by platform thing, a by fandom thing, or...?

That's an interesting take and I could see it being true in some circles, but it has not been my experience. I know some people tag "noncon" instead of "rape" because they feel "rape" is more triggering as a word and "noncon" gets the message across in a gentler way. (This is specifically something I've seen talked about, not my own opinion.) I do think "noncon" is used for more kink fic unless they're specifically doing the Dead Dove route.

I will also add that my main experience with this comes from early LJ days, ao3 discussions, and early tumblr discussions. I'm not too up on current discourse.

I've never heard of this distinction before. I understand the logic, but I've never seen it in practice where I spend time.

Re: fandom tagging

(Anonymous) 2025-07-01 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never seen this before or seen people separate it like this. There seems kinda to be a logistical issue with it though? Non-con as an idea is way broader than rape and even if we're limiting it to sexual things, many sexual actions or situations that aren't rape can be completely non-consensual and deserve the tag. For example like sexual threats, forced dom/sub kink dynamics, etc etc

Re: fandom tagging

[personal profile] nanslice 2025-07-01 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not seen that distinction. I've seen it mostly come down to the individual and what their personal thoughts are about it. If someone likes noncon, they're more likely to call it noncon. If they don't like noncon, they're most likely to call it rape.

That's just what I've noticed, anyways!

Re: fandom tagging

(Anonymous) 2025-07-01 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
This was definitely the case in several of my fandoms 20+ years ago. But I think now it’s more a case of language shifting, particularly in today’s puritanical fandom environment.

Re: fandom tagging

(Anonymous) 2025-07-02 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
It would make sense, but I haven't seen it.

My impression is that fandom tends to default to using pluralistic, open-ended words for fictional stuff:

-slash for explicit relationships between men. We forget how controversial describing without judging this, even in fiction, really was for a long time, because that view has become much more mainstream very quickly.

-whump for putting a character through adversity, that can involve their graphic torture and serious injury.

-noncon to encompass the range of things a reader might be responding favorably to if that's a kink of theirs, yet want to avoid in a broad way if coercion itself squicks them.

-underage for all the possibilities that combine sensual experiences and children. The descriptor's clear, yet neutral enough that writers adopt it voluntarily. Whereas, even the AO3 changing their tag to "underage sex" sparked a lot of conflict. IMO, rightly.

We take this finesse for granted in fandom, because it's touched so many areas, and it's barely visible when it's facilitating a lack of conflict between fans and squicked people.

But it seems like no coincidence to me that something squicked people consistently try to do, when they want other people to buy into their moral crusading, is replace words that don't inherently cast the imaginary thing as depraved and evil with words that do.

Re: fandom tagging

(Anonymous) 2025-07-02 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
My beef with this is that it presumes noncon and rape are the same thing when they are not.

Something can be both noncon and rape. If a fic contains rape then it's usually noncon. But not always, it can be dubcon too.

A fic can contain noncon events and interactions that aren't rape though and if it does I'd sure would hope it's tagged with noncon but not with rape if no rape is in the fic.

Con noncon I would err on the side of caution and tag both just in case.

But they're not interchangeable tags to me, they're ones that are often but not always together. Assuming from the start that they're the same thing is the error.

Re: fandom tagging

(Anonymous) 2025-07-03 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see that split in every fandom, and it's not like a hard and fast rule in any fandom I've been a part of, but I do think, vibes-wise... like, yeah, if I see something tagged with just one or the other, I'm not surprised if 'noncon' comes with some depth, gets into the victim's headspace, but I'm also not surprised if it's just kink/fantasy scenario porn. If it's just tagged as 'rape', it well may be exactly as explicit or even exactly as erotic, but I want that story to focus on the victim's trauma/recovery.

The other place I think there's a split is that 'noncon' can be used in situations where it's not dubcon *to the audience*, but it is to the perpetrator-- if Character A knows this is very much a situation they aren't consenting to and so does the audience, but for any reason Character B does not understand that, then I can see 'noncon' as a sort of soft nuance zone between 'dubcon' and 'rape'.

What are your non-bread breakfast ideas?

Trying to find some. Also, what other stuff would you put in a smoothie with chocolate almond milk, vanilla greek yogurt, and bananas?

Honestly I really love just doing fruit and nuts for breakfast. A little sweet, a little protein, fast and easy.

I prefer savory breakfasts, and my go-to is a hard-boiled egg with halved cherry tomatoes and cheese cubes.

Re: What are your non-bread breakfast ideas?

(Anonymous) 2025-07-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My go to breakfast food is hard boiled eggs. I make em by the dozen, pop them back into their carton, then just grab one out each morning.

For your smoothie, I bet it would be amazing if you added blueberries or peanut butter/peanut butter powder. Raw spinach also weirdly goes really well with chocolate. Cashews are another great option and even a couple tablespoons of quinoa would be a nice choice for subtly changing flavors while adding a protein boost. If you’re new to smoothie making, I recommend playing around with the ratios a lot. I found cutting back on the yogurt, using half a banana instead of a whole one, and adding ice was the right mix for me. It was more economical too but the main thing was that it cut way back on how much sugar I consumed.

I have a protein shake for breakfast. Boring. It's just a chocolate protein powder, some peanut butter powder, chia seeds, and water. I drink it throughout the morning.

Your smoothie seems pretty good as-is, but some off the top of my head ideas you could try adding: ice, pb or pb powder, protein powder, chia seeds, psyllium husk, hemp hearts, fruit, maybe some spinach (I find it doesn't change the flavor much but opinions vary). Obvi not all of the above, but you could mix and match what works for you.

Strawberries, mango, pineapple, raspberries, blueberries, cherries, apple (if your blender is tough enough), peaches, plums...basically, any fresh or frozen fruit you can get your paws on.
I make a smoothie most mornings with chocolate protein powder, plain greek yogurt, blueberries, strawberries, banana, pineapple and mango (the latter frozen). Makes a lovely, thick, fruity smoothie. The frozen fruit helps thicken it.

Alternately, eggs with some salsa and cheese and spinach.

Sex work

(Anonymous) 2025-07-02 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I am an adult, bisexual woman who has had fantasies of being dommed by another woman her whole adult life. I've dabbled in diluted BDSM before with romantic partners, but nothing has quite scratched that itch. So I have three, possibly very naive questions...
1. Is this something a type of sex worker could do for me?
2. I'm terrified of getting in legal trouble so is there a way around that? And finally
3. Is even entertaining the thought morally wrong?
2.
