I'm disappointed in how Neopets has become almost nothing but "buy this thing!" (s!b: try saying that in the neo circles that still exist.)

Sorry for turning your secret into a secret of my own op but last time I revisited neopets hoping for some fun I got a bunch of 30 to 40 yos ganging up against me cus I "had too many wn pets"

lemme explain. It's gonna sound hilarious because it is.

Neopets have unique names. So as a kid I would look up who created like Goku first and go ohh cool. At one point staff began freeing cool names for the sake of server space and thats called a purge. So around 2012 I stopped playing and just before that there was a purge. I decided to make 8yo me happy by creating a lot of fandom named pets. And then I quit because life got busy and adult

Okay cool. FF to 2023 IIRC I am depressed because of unemployment, job market, harassment, health issues and I tell myself I am going to play a low stakes childhood game for fun and I chose fucking Neopets. Log in and joyfully check my old accounts. They're around yay :) I remember I have a lot of fandom pets but I moved on from some of these fandoms so I go on the pet trading board to try and trade them. Hoping to hear some "omg I love that fandom" and "omg let's trade"

Well that did happen for like 2 days. Then I realized there was a whole economy revolving around pet's names and how fucking serious business it was because people were paying real money for that shit. It's not legal but here we are. Wait there's more, there's hackers living off (like making 6 figures) off neopets hacking. And apparently admins are involved (hii Alice) and its like this super serious business thing. And well I happened to have made all my accounts active again just before a purge so the people who were waiting for my pets to get purged got mad. so a bunch of 30 yo fuckers with money to spend on illegal neopets (??????????) ganged up on my unemployed autistic unhealthy ass because they were jealous. of my neopets' names. in 2024 and I didn't deserve them because I hadn't paid for them or worked hard for them (??????????) and I wasn't one of the Cool Kids or whatever. Lord

My autistic ass trying to be happily nostalgic on a game she loved as a child suddenly disrupted a whole ass black market economy by fucking logging in and trying to make friends wee :3 because I was looking for fucking low stakessssssssssss

So yea that's to say 100% agree with your secret. Somehow that episode made me so Persona Non Grata among wealthy millennials and/or millennials with hacking skills that perhaps it's the reason why they hack into my camera to this day. And I didn't manage to get an invite to grundo's cafe maybe cause of that too. I am fucking telling you I had never had so many people gang up on me for no reason before. And I was the kid playing neopets with pets like Goku. And I got on neopets because they bullied me out of a job. So yeah.

Neopets is a shadow of what it once was. I get the site needs some monetary elements to survive like many sites do now, but it's completely overtaken it to where that's the only thing that is given any focus... while the site itself is unusable on mobile with giant disruptive ads (heck if anyone knows a way to block ads, let me know. Adblock seems to not work on my phone along with the Brave browser, can't even log into neopass with it...) and that you know, majority of the games still don't work either. But let's keep pumping out 10 recolors of a wig because people eat it up!!!!!

"Retail" Neopets is SO unplayable now. It really sucks because at least the Neotag on Tumblr made things fun before Jumpstart, the Neopocalypse, Netdragon, and the new company, but I don't even want to bother anymore. I hate the NC Mall more and the economy is awful. I'm glad Grundo's Cafe and Moderneopets exist.

It's crazy how it was doing better when literal Scientologists were in charge 20 years ago. I was excited about the new merch at first, but I have no interest in most of it. I just miss the old stuff sold at Limited Too and Claires :(

Oooh, I wasn't aware Neopets even still existed!
I have such fond memories of several of the old flashgames. Also how Neopets made me realize as a kid that I was a serious risk for a gambling addiction and should never gamble with real money irl (it was that pirate slots game that gave me that reality check). Also I stayed up all night once to help a friend get a limited pet (the fish). Good times.
Not surprised it's fully monetised now though.
... Now I wonder if Gaia Online still exists. That's what kinda took its place for me after I outgrew Neopets.

It truly blows my mind that *Neopets*, of all things, now has a community where everything has become Serious Fucking Business. I made an account in the early 2000s when I was a kid, and every few years I log back on and find that the site sucks even more. When it got to the point where they were pushing spending real money, I kind of checked out, and that was a long time ago. It's only gotten much much worse since then. Like I remember it being this fun site with British spellings of things, some of the artwork was really amateur, things were a little janky at times, and now it's become something I don't even recognize. I even have a faerie grundo plushie somewhere that I got from like Limited Too, and a little plastic Acara figurine, they even made, like, Tamagotchi/Giga Pets versions that I had! And now it's had the fun sucked out of it.

I still play there regularly, and enjoy it well enough, but my mother, who joined back in the early 00s, went back there a couple days ago and said the same thing about how commercialized it's become. I don't notice because I'm become sort of desensitized to that and just ignore it, but I can see how it'd look to someone who hasn't been there in a long while.

I got into the myth of Robin Hood when I was in primary school back in the 90s. The library had this huge book with all the stories and to this day I have never been able to find it. I wish younger me had taken notice of the author and title.

I've come to realize that I love the characters of the Star Wars sequels, but I don't love the plots. The new characters are amazing, but the plots are mostly a boring retread that in some cases retroactively ruin old stories (bringing Palpatine back was just wrong). But I don't like to say it out loud because the haters are terrible and I don't want to be one of them.

While legally this was an important case re: the Stand Your Ground law and I'm glad it got attention and that the shooter got what she deserved, this was a pretty mid documentary. It's mostly bodycam and interrogation room footage. I feel like anyone with moderate skill could've edited this together. This could've been a Youtube video. Not great even by Netflix standards!
