Me and the gf will be driving to see our respective families over the days of Christmas, I've got to go to work for a few days before new years but then I'm off again until the 5th. So its mostly family stuff and relaxing before another year begins.

My sister and BIL are coming up for Christmas! We are doing a taco bar kind of meal.

On New Year's, I'll visit them. It is also my birthday so we'll go out for dinner.

Annoying app notifications, a pointless vent

The Twitch app is getting dangerously close to being removed from my phone. It's going to follow the same path as SnapChat and Twitter before it. I had Twitter on my phone for awhile, but it continually spammed me with notifications about things I wasn't interested in until I finally completely removed it from my phone.

SnapChat did the same thing. I didn't mind if it once in awhile said "Hey, you might know this person" or "Your friend so-and-so has a new post" but it started doing that multiple times a day, and THEN it started telling me "Random Celebrity/Influencer has a new post" and just all kinds of utter garbage spam. I didn't delete it, but I turned off all notifications unless I directly receive or am tagged in something. No more suggestions, they can shove the suggestions.

Twitch has started doing that too. I like the notification when someone I follow goes live, but I do not need to know that some rando I have never heard of is having a hype train, or a high number of viewers, or a suggestion to watch someone who I am currently watching (???).

If you want to once in awhile suggest something to me, I'll tolerate that. Sometimes it might be something useful or interesting. But as soon as you start badgering me with repeated bullshit, you're getting removed entirely or strictly limited.

Not interested in Twitch (or those other two) but are there settings for what kind of notifications you can get, or is it all-or-nothing?

I hate that. Walmart has been driving me crazy with notifications.

I have almost every app notification setting turned off because I cannot stand having my phone go off with random shit the apps want me to look at or buy.

This isn’t me suggesting that as if you’re using Twitch’s one then you likely want to be notified when the streamers you watch go live, I’m just commiserating with you over how annoying notifs are in general.

The only app notifications I leave on are for things like BBC News and weather alerts.

Just turn them off in settings?

Polar Express!

Maybe it's because I find the animation creepy and off-putting, or maybe it's because for my long years of teaching, that's the only Christmas movie my kids ever want to watch on the day before break. I'm soooo tired of it.

Soundtrack is decent though.

Almost all of them honestly.

I enjoy Christmas as a holiday but there are very few ‘about Christmas itself’ movies that I can stand, and the ones I can are kind of deliberately terrible. Example: I enjoy the Princess Switch movies unironically but it’s because they’re pretty aware of how dumb they are. Otherwise Christmas movies just aren’t for me, winter season it Tolkien season for me instead were I watch the 6 movies over the holidays.

A Christmas Story, for sure. Everyone in it is deeply repugnant, especially the children, ESPECIALLY the little brother.

The scene where the mom is trying to get the little brother to eat gave me such a visceral feeling of disgust.

Elf. Will Ferrell is just obnoxious.

The live-action Grinch. I just don't care for it. And I hate all the commercialized Grinch shit.

I tried to watch Love Actually and didn't get very far in because I hated all the characters. Maybe I'd like it if I gave it a chance, but nah.

99% of them. A Christmas Story, Its a Wonderful Life, the live action Grinch with Jim Carrey, and all the Christmas romance movies especially.

I'd probably hate Lampoon if I'd had to watch it a million times like the others. I've only seen it once, did't like it, but thankfully my parents didn't watch it growing up.

My dad loved a Christmas Story, so that's the one we watched the most. I hate it so much.

Polar Express creeps me out and I really dislike that a live-action Grinch movie exists.

I don't think it's beloved by a lot of people, but I feel like I should warn others how terrible I think The Night Before (2015) is.

Die Hard, especially when people get all obnoxious about telling everyone it's a Christmas movie like they were the first person to have thought of it. I don't like Bruce Willis at all.

Never seen Elf but I almost never find Will Ferrell funny anyway. (The two exceptions to this are more cowbell guy and Blades of Glory)
I LOATHE It's A Wonderful Life. It's sappy bullshit, NOBODY has a town full of people who will run over with big bushel baskets of money if they're in trouble, and I DO NOT APPRECIATE some movie from 1947 telling me if a woman isn't married that it's some fate worse than death!!!

I really hate holiday movie classical to my country. Especially when people tell me that HOW I can't like it, it's a classic.
I tried watching Golden Hollywood movies like It's a Wonderful Life and have found them annoying frankly.
Harry Potter movies. I disliked them even before Joan showed her whole ass.

Two people were “found dead” at Rob Reiner’s house today. Their ages match Rob and his wife. The homicide and burglary units are investigating which makes it unlikely it was a murder suicide but instead both were murdered. The rumor is it was one of their sons.

Advice on distancing from friends

This is weighing on my mind but I'll try and keep it relatively brief; have/had a friend I used to work with, was very close with, spent a lot of time with. She was probably the best friend I've had in years. She suddenly became distant around the time my Dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer, became very sporadic with replying to messages and was basically nowhere to be found when he passed. We arranged to meet for drinks on Father's day (3 months after he died, first Father's Day without him so I was a bit sore), she didn't show up, didn't message and didn't explain/acknowledge it at all until 3 days later.

2 months later, after no contact, she has a family emergency and asks me to watch her kids on short notice, which I do for the whole day. Have heard basically nothing from her since. I still message her on her birthday and at Christmas to say I miss her and hope she's okay. Sometimes I get a reply, sometimes I get left on read.

Am I being an idiot here? I want to ask if I fucked up somewhere, but I don't want to bother her either. I just don't get where I went wrong. I miss her.
