Because of my experiences, I get wary when I hear or see someone say they exclusively/only read nonfiction because I mentally associate it with my ex. My ex was one of the most pretentious people I've ever met. He read exclusively nonfiction (and refused to read anything else), and he belittled me because I read fiction (I also read nonfiction too) and would call me a childish loser for wanting to read about made-up worlds/people. There's a reason an ex.

...does this really count as fandom?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Are fictional books not fandom to you?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Specific books, yeah.

The act of reading, no.

This secret is about the latter.

"I read fiction. I also read non-fiction." And the fandom is....?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
DA yeah I don’t really see a secret, just trauma dumping.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree. People make secrets about watching TV or movies without naming a specific show or movie. It's consumption of media, which is part of every fandom.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Those secrets don't need to name the specific show or movie to still be about a specific show or movie.

This secret is not about a book or a series or any fictional literary universe... or, indeed, anything the secret maker is interested in at all. It is, again, about the act of reading.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Is the act of watching movies fandom? How about video games?

If it were only non-fiction I might agree with you, but this is about OP liking fiction. Not simply liking to read news articles or something.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
But sometimes the secrets aren't about a specific show or movie. They're about the state of television or movies in general. IMO, it doesn't need to be about a specific work, and that includes books.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
DA Exactly, it gets kinda ridiculous if you say the same thing with TV instead of books. Some ex who only watches the news and documentaries thinks it's silly to watch any and all fictional TV shows. It's very much about being a fan of things

I'm sorry you had the misfortune of dating someone like that, OP. I have met a handful of them, and they are always so insufferable. Why waste time on fake stuff, it's a waste of time, are you a little kid or a baby. Oh, I don't know, maybe I "waste time" on it because I FIND IT ENJOYABLE???

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you dated such an asshole OP. That guy didn't deserve you.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm always leery of those kinds of people too. They're usually the most pretentious. Glad you got away from yours.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I just find people who think like this are boring as shit and insufferable. I'm lucky I encountered only a couple of them IRL.
Not reading fictional books because you have aphantasia or/and you have no time and toher interests? SURE, OK. Not a problem. Everyone has their preferences and schedules. Not reading fictional books because you find them childish? WELL. You better never watch a movie or go to the theatre or even enjoy music who tell a story because guess what it's all made up. And the philosophy/history factoids guys like that (because it's usually men) spew out is all based on myths or parables and guess what it's all made up stories, too.
Human culture is based on fictional stories...

I get why you'd feel that way, my ex is why I have a knee-jerk negative reaction to a lot of things.
But you shouldn't take someone saying "I only read nonfiction" to automatically mean "people who read fiction are childish losers", those are two separate sentences. You just ask why someone only reads non-fiction, and if they say something rude like that, then you can form a judgment.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, my dad only reads non-fiction because that's what he likes, and he's dyslexic so he reads slowly and has trouble remembering plot. But I have noticed that if he says this, other male family members do like to jump in and talk about how it's IMPORTANT and MANLY to read only non-fiction, not like those weak little lady books. And then he smacks them down (my mum is a huge reader of everything) and it's great.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
For sure, I think it's fine to only read nonfiction. If that's what you enjoy, that's what you enjoy, right? The problem is when you judge other people about what they read.

Same goes for, well, all forms of entertainment.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always been a little jealous of people who can read and enjoy fiction! There are so few works of fiction that can keep me turning pages, and I've often felt like it was an attention span issue or an imagination issue or something. But give me a social history or biography, and I'll read until my eyes give out.

I think it just comes down to what personally interests a person, and I can't understand shaming anyone who's reading basically anything. Reading any sort of material improves the mind IMO, as opposed to watching everything play out on a screen.

But here's where I wonder... is OP one of those "audio books don't count!!" people. Because if so, that hypocrisy would be astounding to me, and I know some regulars here feel that way. And I hope they can recognize they come off every bit as condescending as your ex.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-25 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Your ex sounds like an ass and I’m glad he’s your ex.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
All novels are fantasies. Some are more honest about it....

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think people like that are so obnoxious. Reading in general is good, but we all have different points of interest and there's nothing wrong with that.

I feel like exclusively reading nonfiction books would get so boring.

Also, the nonfiction books section is where I've come across some the worst writers AND the genre is chocked full if money hungry grifters. Nonfiction books are by no mean inherently better than fiction books.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-26 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with your last line very much. NOT ALL nonfiction, of course not. But there are so many people writing these nonfiction pseudoscientific self-help utter garbage books just to try and become the next big thing that everyone buys into so they can make a lot of money.
