I really, really hate crossovers in fic. This is a secret, because two of my closest friends have been writing crossover stories for years - that they never clean up to publish! It’s just this RP-esque dialogue-heavy bullshit! - and I have been the hype-man and encouragement and it is always the dumbest shit.

I have yet to see a crossover fic that wasn't the most self-indulgent drivel ever put to metaphorical paper from anyone, whether it’s my buddies or in the wild on any fic archive.

Curious what makes crossover fic more self-indulgent than other types of fanfic.

There’s definitely a lot of it that’s just not very good, but that seems standard for fanfiction and amateur writing in general.

But I've seen a few crossovers that do come across as more self-indulgent than other fic and it has to do with the characters and characterizations. It's hard to explain, but you know the really over the top fans that just think their faves are the best most perfect character ever? And then they write fic about all of their faves being the best and most perfect characters ever together.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's kind of like self inserts and Mary Sues. It's top of the self indulgent pile but I support people writing whatever is fun for them to write. (As long as I'm not forced to read it.)

I can see that. I guess I haven’t run into much of that type in the fandoms where I read fanfiction. Or maybe I click away before I get that far because of other writing issues.

I am unfortunately familiar with crossover fic on the model of “this character is the best and going to show up in another story’s setting to demonstrate how stupid it and all its characters are”. Which feels primarily spiteful to me, but is also a form of self-indulgence, I suppose.

I love crossovers

(Anonymous) 2026-01-29 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
But only if they are done well. Definitely not that weird RP stuff that reminds me of the "soulbonds" and "kin" days. I love when an author can make two worlds come together and actually work.

Idk why you have to be the hypeman for your friends. My friends write stuff I am absolutely not into and find pretty yuck but they know this and it doesn't really matter because we're friends. I get excited for them when they get hits and comments but I'm never going to read their fic or share it or anything. Being friends doesn't mean you have to agree and love everything all the time.

Isn't that the same for everything? I love many things but only when they are good.

No, some people don't like certain things even if they are objectively very well done.

Honestly, I don't go into most crossovers expecting epicness. I go in for fun and silliness. And if it's the rare story that pulls more than one world together in a serious way and somehow makes it work... as in, I believe these characters met and it wasn't some fever dream... well, I'd say that's a bonus.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-29 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
As a big fan of certain crossovers, I actually avoid ones that look like they’re aiming for “epic” or even a big helping of plot. I think very few writers can pull that off.

Small moments of characters from different stories interacting – that’s my jam.

I haven't really read crossovers since FFnet since on AO3 the tags usually look like a wall of text that I want to avoid :P

(Anonymous) 2026-01-29 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, the dreaded “is this actually a crossover or is it twenty mini-fics in one work (with twenty stories worth of tags)?”

I actually really love crossovers and have read some good, fun stories in the genre, so...*shrug*
To each their own.

(A couple delightful Calvin & Hobbes in Stargate:Atlantis come to mind....)

The Inception fic where Calvin grows up to be Eames is also great. And the one where Calvin is a Duane-style Young Wizard.

Maybe the key to a good crossover is just Calvin.

Me too. Love them. They can be hard to get right, but I love authors exploring how different fictional universes would work together.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-29 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen some done well like twenty years ago. Honestly, it depends what you prefer though, since I love for a mash of the character to be there rather than replacing the originals with a cast from a different show.
The one crossover with a special place in my heart was the Third Rock from the Sun fic crossed with Inception. Arthur was the same character he was in Third Rock, and it was awesome!

I've been writing x-files/supernatural crossover for over a decade now and I'm never going to stop lol maybe they are cringe but IDGAF. creating cases where the winchester brothers have to collaborate and butt heads with scully/mulder is very fun to me. and playing with the angel and alien lore is hilarious

Oh, I love a good crossover casefic. Especially if it depicts all the characters as reasonably competent.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-30 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I am a fangirl/ hype man for a couple of people in my fandom. I’m so happy they write! I’m so happy it makes them happy. I hate their stories. So I feel ya there. We are bothered good friends.

This got me thinking about crossover. In sports fandoms I don’t mind like… a tennis player and an F1 driver (not my fandoms but I do read sports RPF. It can work)

Even most actor /musician is pretty bad.

One that sticks me is Wednesday Adam’s and Harmony from Buffy. https://archiveofourown.org/works/1844509

The biggest problem is when there's a hero/hero crossover with no obvious villain or conflict. Those tend to last one or two chapters before getting abandoned, though.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-30 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I love self-indulgent crossover RP bullshit but boy I can't imagine asking someone outside of that RP to look at an unedited version and hype it up... unless I'm in a particular community where someone ASKS to see something like that, I guess-- there have been a couple such cases on servers with friends, where some really specific niche crossover had appeal among a group, but like... that's so different from releasing it into the wild.

It's fair to just NEVER like crossover content at all. As much as I love doing my crossover RP stuff with friends, it doesn't mean I'd want to look at someone else's crossover. Even if it was fandoms I otherwise cared about it wouldn't mean they mesh well together, after all. But, there's one multifandom crossover fic series whose unfinished nature haunts me, because I was really enjoying it.

Sounds like your buddies are having lots of free form fun. Sorry you feel like you have to cheerlead them.

I really like them.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-30 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Fusions, too. Right now, I'm loving quite a few of the Spider-man (generally Holland's Spidey) in Gotham, getting stalked/adopted by the Batfam.

Read a couple of really interesting Mycroft (BBC Sherlock)/Harry Potter, even though I'm quite meh on Sherlock (only watched the first series).

I like to see other fandom's characters pop up on Stargate Atlantis, do the Sentinel/Guide thing, or end up in Hogwarts.

There was one (or maybe two) with Jason Foxtrot going to college with Calvin (Calvin and Hobbes) that I liked. Can't forget the one where Eames (Inception) was Calvin grown up. Or the one where Arthur (Inception) was Cole (The Sixth Sense).

There are still a few that I go back to that were different roles of Due South actors crossed over with each other. Like the one pairing Brian Hawkins (as played by Paul Gross in PBS's Tales of the City, who also played Benton Fraser in Due South) and Billy Tallent (as played by Callum Keith Rennie in Hard Core Logo, who also played Ray Kowalski in Due South).

Sure, I've run into terrible crossover fics, but I've also read great ones. And I don't mind self-indulgent fics as long as they don't go too far with the character-is-obnoxiously-good-at-everything territory (and sometimes even then).

(Anonymous) 2026-01-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I love crossover fics, and I don't think they have a higher incidence of "poorly edited RP logs" than anything else. Though multiverse type fics, where the same character/s go to lots of different worlds, that has a fair few RP types, but that's okay, I just avoid them.
