I don't think Steve Irwin was good to animals. He didn't respect animals and mostly got popular for shock value of how he'd be rough and grab the animals and get closer than others. I hate how he's now held up as some amazing person when there are better examples people couod hero worship.

David Attenborough springs to mind. Belated Happy 100th, Sir David! He showed how it should be done.

A thousand times yes!

I am interested to see the replies to this. I have actually never seen any of the show(s) Steve Irwin was in and don't even know what they were, so I have no knowledge of this subject. But I am quite curious.

I don't think he was inappropriately rough, you do have to be firm with wild animals. A certain degree of roughness is necessary if you want to retain the number of hands you started with.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's almost like...humans shouldn't be in close contact with wild animals at all?? Like there are ways to promote education and conservation without risking any hands at all??

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but they don't work.

Humans are a "hands on" type of ape, we need the physical experiential type of learning experiences if we are truly going to understand something properly.

Missing the point

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't be grabbing wild animals. You should be observing from afar.

Re: Missing the point

(Anonymous) 2026-05-17 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
if everybody did that nobody would ever see anything other than a blurry slide of an animal running away.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I've never had to be rough with a wild animal to protect myself because I don't deliberately interact with them. If I were attacked by one, I'd try to defend myself. But I avoid putting myself close enough to a dangerous animal because I'm sane.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a Crocodile Hunter fan, and I never felt like he was rough with animals. My main takeaway was that he was really passionate about informing his audience of the ways humanity endangers wildlife.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
My main takeaway was he left two kids without a father because he pointlessly put himself at risk.

I've read that he was really mostly big in the US

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
And that generally Australians never really got on with him and his antics. So apparently the Australians agree with you.

Yeah, I'm Australian, and the US worship of him is just weird. He wasn't hated, except for his conservative political stance and sucking up to then-PM John Howard, but he was considered a bit of an idiot for the way he behaved around animals. Especially carrying his baby son into the crocodile pens.

I'm Aussie, and I always found him so obnoxious and loud, so I never really watched him. I do think his heart was in the right place, but man, I couldn't stand him. XD

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a very callous thing to say, and I feel kind of bad about saying it, but it's kind of a fuck around and find out situation here. These are wild animals. If you fuck around with them for long enough, eventually, you're going to find out the hard way why you shouldn't. A lot of people do this kind of extreme stuff (wild animals, climbing, exploring, all kinds of dangerous shit outdoors) and it's all fun and games until they die a very unnecessary early death because all the fucking around caught up to them.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-16 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man... I never paid attention to him, but I had a coworker to absolutely hated him for the reasons OP stated. When he died, she laughed and said "Karma's a bitch." And this is all I know about him.

That's... That's not how karma works at all!

Not the OP but where in the secret does the OP say anything about his knowledge of animals?

Do I think he genuinely loved animals and was passionate about conservation? Yes.

Do I think he made a lot of decisions that favored showmanship over proper engagement with the sorts of animals he worked with? Yes.

I agree with the other commenters that Attenborough is a better example making conservation entertaining to the masses, and frankly I find the calm persona he uses (and his humor) to be much more enjoyable than Irwin's antics ever were.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-17 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oof, I can you why you posted this anonymously cos "thems fightin' words!"

Congrats, you just pissed off the entire country of Australia.

(Anonymous) 2026-05-17 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
No. They're saying what a lot of Aussies say. We don't understand people who lionize him. He was a bit cringey and ridiculous.
