I wish Florence got more love, I adore her.

I'm so sorry. I had that, too, when I was younger *before all the pr0n* so I just stopped. It started out for me not saying anything about my age but when the subject came up I just pulled it out and they believed it, most saying they thought I was older.

The sad thing is, we're pretty good friends *far as internet buds goes*, we tell each other a lot, and I know telling this person would just kill them, not b/c of the age, but b/c of the lying. I don't want to do that, I don't want to keep lying about everything in this way, but I feel completely caught now.

Plus, the whole porn thing started before I was the age of consent. Realistically, I'll probably wait until I'm older, and spill the beans then, but still, I feel like a douche for not saying anything and lying so much.

Thanks for this all, it's nice to know someone else would do the same sort of thing.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I've known a lot of older people in fandom, never really cared about age either way, myself. Sad part is everyone else does.

I am aware of that, and know there are men who feel this way, but men who seek out foreskin restoration are a relatively small percentage of people. And there are a relatively small percentage of men who are advised to be circumcised for medical reasons as well.

Part of what keeps circumcision alive is the emotional investment already-cut men have in the practice.

I don't disagree with this - people opt for circumcision often because dad looks that way, and don't really think about it either way.

My point is that making men who are circumcised, which is usually something people don't get to decide for themselves, feel as if they're somehow lesser, or maimed, or unattractive to others is not cool. Just as the "foreskins! eww!" opinion is hurtful to uncut men.

Body dysmorphia goes both ways, and most people try to make the most of what we've got, whether nature or surgery was involved.

If you weren't in the mood to beat a dead horse, you wouldn't have replied. The poor thing has been flogged so badly, it's basically bones by now.

And it wasn't about dolls or the merchandise. More along the line of actions.

[identity profile] butt-cysts-ftw.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it shouldn't be assumed that you're hot for him because you're a heterosexual girl. But that's hardly his fault, is it? I mean, have you watched Firefly? The main reason it lasted so short is because Fox kept moving it around on their schedule, so people could never watch it because they had no idea what time it was on.

I can understand not liking Castle, because it simply isn't everybody's cup of tea. And I can understand not being attracted to Nathan Fillion... that's not unreasonable. Different strokes and all that. But I've met him, and he is one of the nicest guys alive. He actually actively seeks to spend time or communicate with his fans, he does a lot of charity work, and I've never heard him say an unkind word about anyone.

I just can't help but feel like your distaste for him is fueled entirely by his popularity more than the fact that you might not care for any show he's been in. I mean, hell, he's pretty easy to avoid unless you're a part of a fandom based on one of his shows.

*raises hand* xcuse me! Yeah. Hi. I'd just like to know what exactly an intelligent person -looks- like?

[identity profile] eandh99.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Man I loved this show back in the day - only show I ever went across country to go to Conventions for (totally worth it, met Alberta and Don, got Matthew's autograph, Lawrence Bayne shoulda been a star!), but yeah the fandom seems to have evaporated. Without the amazing music and stellar cast they had, the willingness to let the older characters be sexual too, the joy that was Roy Dupuis, the total kickass that Peta brought to the character... I just don't see this working well.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
lol wait, you're a dorian gray fan and you're squicked by guy-on-guy?

you DO know what was in the original, unedited version of the book, right?

[identity profile] eandh99.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
while he IS gay, he also really likes women and has this kind of great chemistry with Eve (and with others that I've seen) which comes from friendship as far as I can tell. First series (this pic is from filming ep 12 IIRC) the characters also had that chemistry, especially in the first few episodes; second series that all went a bit hinky IMO. And he's played het romantic leads most of his career. This particular pic turned into a very popular icon with a caption like: And she gets PAID for this job?

Re: randomly popping back in here.

[identity profile] adraekh.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, of course! I find that the flaws of the FMA manga and anime make great fodder for stories. It's excellent sometimes, a little unrefined other times, but that gives us a firm foundation and some nice raw potential to work with. I love it! (And Arakawa has certainly created some pretty damn nice groundwork, which is more than what I can say for my other main fandom, which is just a whole lot of potential but very little substance. All smoke and mirrors, I say.) Typically, the harsher and more detailed my criticism, the more I like what I'm talking about; I wouldn't spend so much time thinking about it otherwise.

The things that I love which I consider perfect are also things that I am content to love for what they are, and I don't end up seeking out the fandom, or coming up with my own alternate story ideas, or even getting really deep into shipping... a good story simply satisfies me, and although I will read truly good stories over and over again and consider myself a fan, I don't need anything more than that to make me happy.

I'm mostly the same way with the things I truly like. I try not to mess with the things I love, but for a bit of a different reason - not necessarily because the canon satisfies me, but because I'm afraid to taint it with my touch. Dumb way of thinking, right? (People say to write what you love and all that good stuff . . .) It's why I don't actually write about the characters/pairings I like all that often. I'm just afraid of messing them up and having people draw the "wrong" conclusions about that character/pairing from the portrayal in a story, and then I'd feel absolutely horrible. Ideal world in my head, but once it gets down on paper, it's absolute dreck, and people will think what they will. So the only thing I can do to keep people from making these "wrong" assumptions is to . . . not write the story! Hah. My logic fails me even now, sometimes.

We'll have to disagree on the "no ending" side, but I'm showing my bias. Open endings fascinate me. Also, I'm actually not overly concerned with what happens in the canon after the initial set-up. I'll bitch about it or praise it sometimes, but - you know, it's fandom and there will always be stories. I think the best phrase I can use to describe it is "time out of mind", if that makes sense. It's there, and I'm glad it exists, but I don't care for it beyond a certain point in its existence. This would explain why the ending of Shamballa doesn't piss me off as much as it should. Open-ended and I don't particularly care! Hurrah, it's a win-win situation for me.

And yes, this has been an interesting discussion! I normally don't come out of my shell because I'm afraid of wank (and this secret inspires all sorts of wank), but I'm glad I decided to chime in, because you've raised some interesting points. Your initial comment about people often mistaking a badass character for a well-written character is a good one, and it's one of the things that I've been trying to articulate for a while but just haven't been able to. (I might also go so far as to say people do mistake badassery for strength, in the complete sense of the word. A badass character isn't even necessarily strong as a person or well-written as a character.) In any case, I feel that much of what's going on with Riza is that Arakawa isn't entirely sure whether she wants to make Riza a character or a plot device, so she's stuck her in some horrible limbo between the two extremes, and it rubs some people the wrong way.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
But was the person who started this thread trying to do that? She said she finds cut dicks gross. Well, okay? How the hell is that anyone's business? She's perfectly allowed to think cut dicks are gross. Plenty of people on this thread have said otherwise.

If you don't think it's okay to say that, well, then it would be logical to say that it's not ever okay to say that you find someone unattractive for any reason. Because you might hurt their feelings.

If you don't hold that stance, your position is pretty hypocritical.

[identity profile] riveryklown.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
LoL I'm like this about some stuff too... sometimes I'm amused, other times I wanna slap myself... oh well :) You're not alone.

[identity profile] riveryklown.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to be a meanie, but, instead of ending the friendship, you could for starters treat them the same way. Not to mention you could tell them their videos suck.
Which, I mean, I know I should say "try talking to them" but I'm feeling extra passive aggressive lately.

But more importantly, you shouldn't let your friends keep you hostage with implied threats of shitstorms. Life's a bitch, they better get used to it.

I don't know about you, but it's not exactly "self-cleaning" -- you can end up with a lot of excess bacteria which causes all kinds of itchiness. I went to the doctor (female by the way) because I thought something was wrong with me, but she told me that it was just an excess of bacteria and that douching is even okay as long as you don't do it all the time -- I thought I had some kind of disease because it was itching so bad, but it was just dirty in there.

I got fed a lot of the whole "lol self-cleansing vagina" stuff growing up from feminist zines and my women's studies courses but look at this way, nobody tells men that their penis is self-cleaning because it isn't, it needs to be cleaned every once in awhile or else it's going to get all funky. I'm sure the VAGINA is self-cleaning but the labia aren't, and some women have bigger labia than others (some people have big ol' meat curtains). I mean, you piss, bleed and cum from inside there, stuff is going to build up inside your labia and of course you need to clean it every once in awhile, with water at least.

There's a difference between cleaning the folds of your labia and shoving soap or other crap up into your vagina, you know. It's not like I'm telling people to douche with Lysol, I'm just saying it's generally a good idea to keep your parts clean.

LOL well played, madam.

Yeah, real life people are very... actively involved in your (general you) life.
In the sense that... Now I know you think you're depressed. In fact, we all do. And we can give you some advice, or not, and the next moment we'll be away from the computer forgetting all about you.
Real life people will have expectations of you. They will want you to work on not being depressed or seeking help if it is a real problem etc. They can be really annoying :) But that doesn't mean they don't understand.

Unless of course they are actualfax SOBs and you have reason to suspect they wouldn't understand at all and would be horrible towards you. In that case you need new friends.
