Dude, get it together. People are not going to automatically assume that when you buy a cake you are getting it to eat all by yourself, regardless of weight. Why not give them your name and say it's your friend? I really don't get the whole freak out thing here, but no offense, reactions like that are not quite normal. Maybe you should talk to someone? Heh... You know, I've tinkered with the idea myself.

To be successful in fiction, all you have to do is find a sensitive, raw nerve (possibly something originating from childhood or adolescence) and yanking on that nerve, milking it for all it's worth. Alternatively, you could find a common fantasy and exploit it.

This is the driving force behind the success of:
• the Twilight Saga
• Ernest Hemmingway
• Neon Genesis Evangelion
• angsty Nine Inch Nails songs

I had an online fandom friend tell me they were female after 18 months of talking to them online. The fact she was not who she originally said she was really didn't bother me. The only thing I was slightly irritated at was being outright lied to, as in she told me numerous times she was male and then lied by saying she had never gave a clear answer (as well as getting other mutual online friends to not tell me who she really was, changing gender settings on profiles, etc.).

The fact she was really a she made absolutely no fucking difference to me. It was the fact she told everyone except me from the offset and then, when she did tell me, she did so in such a wanky dramatic way.

If your online friendships are based around fandom then it really shouldn't make a blind bit of difference who you are. If you do want to tell people, maybe talk to the friend you trust the most first. People won't react as badly as you think and if they do, then they're not worth being friends with. Hope everything works out for you. :)

If the fandom is pertinent, it'll be listed. If a certain amount of ambiguity can be maintained, it should be.

139- ME TOO!!!! And sometimes, I think about how much I could've contributed to fandom if most of the stuff in my head ended up typed out, and feel like it was all wasted instead :(

143- I love when the fandom is vague, because then I can imagine it being some really small, obscure fandom I like, but highly doubt the secret was about. Also, I usually end up a bit disappointed if the fandom is "outed", especially since it's usually one I'm not all that interested in. Basically, not mentioning the fandom allows the secret to be something many people can relate to, regardless of what movies, books, shows, etc they're interested in.

150- I pretty much have mixed feelings. I mean, it can be funny if they're just joking about silly fandom-related things such as Mary-Sues, awkwardly bad fanart/fanfics, or flame wars started from things that really shouldn't be a big deal. But I don't like when they treat real, significant issues like a joke, making fun of people because they were upset by something truly devastating in real life or bash people for being physically or mentally disabled. And I ESPECIALLY don't like when I see them give out personal information, and encourage readers to harass someone, even if that person was a jerk online. :/

101: Don't feel bad for this, OP, this is probably way more common than you think.

104: Serenity was its chance to get disappointing. I think it would've done WAY better with a couple more seasons than it did with that movie.

142: I don't take the roles of actors with enough weight to think that this is a serious problem. The director watched and loved the animated series, films and animated series are different things and therefore will be treated differently by creators, and I don't think a little touch of method acting is going to sabotage the thematic connection between the source and the adaptation. All this being said, I haven't been following this fandom closely enough to know if Shyamalan has said anything else like this that I'd be pissed about.
