I know right! It's not like 90% of the world is het or something . . .

OH WAIT.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
More recent estimates are at something like 80%.

But what about the gen fans who don't want any canon romance?

A hundred times yes. Really I'd just like to see a female character whose life and role doesn't revolve around romance.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I... you're kidding, right?

River Tam, anyone? She was too busy working out her emotional/mental issues to be interested in boys. :D

[identity profile] paperscout.livejournal.com 2010-07-18 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Agree with this. You see it in shows, but not in fic so much. Sometimes, I just wanna read gen fic.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Every single female character from the Resident Evil series?

...I don't understand why people don't play more games. Back in the day a fandom friend of mine went on a rant about how games portray women as sex objects and how horrible it is and blah de blah - no, they really don't. Not most of them. I mean there's DoA but there are also ~~sexy~~ tv shows, films, and books.

It came out that, unsurprisingly, the only games she'd played were Final Fantasy and other JRPGs and gooooo figuuuuuure. Those games are almost all about some mushy romance, with female characters that are as cutesy wutesy as possible so as not to threaten their otaku fanbase >_>

tl;dr - if you tried them you'd be surprised how well games with guns treat female characters, actually.

Ripley from Alien.

I really want to try and come up with fandoms that don't... anyone?

The only fandom of mine that doesn't is OZ (which is one!).

That's all I got. Anyone? (Check me trying to start discussion rather than wank...:p.)

It has pissed me off since before I knew what het was

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't mind thousands of canon het ships if every single fandom would have AT LEAST ONE canon slash or femslash ship, to be honest.

And this secret sounds a little heterophobic to me (which of course doesn't exist like reverse racism or misandry according to all the wise people in fandom -.-).

Seriously though, since I don't like using words that end in "phobic," I hope you're kidding. This is a really stupid secret.

It actually does bother me that there almost always needs to be a romantic relationship in canon and that that relationship almost always is het.

And that male/female relationships are rarely explored in canon without the two of them getting together or experiencing major romantic tension unless at least one of them is gay. And even then you get a lot of unrequited love. (Harry/Hermoine and Sheldon/Penny being lovely exceptions.)

(Anonymous) 2010-07-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate the real world because everywhere I look there are icky heterosexuals! Every single town is full of them! THERE'S NO ESCAPE!

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
how else are they going to stop the ship wars?

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I understand if you were complaining about the lack of canon gay and lesbian couples (THAT DON'T DIE OR GO EVIL THANK YOU), but this is seriously stupid.

[identity profile] hologrphcbuddha.livejournal.com 2010-07-19 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
rofl wut

If you're talking about obvious endgame "OTP"-type ships that tend to hijack the show at the detriment of other elements (unless you're talking about a soap opera or a show whose premise is clearly based around a couple, e.g. Lois&Clark), then I see your point. But if you mean there should be no canon het pairings whatsoever, then yes, this secret is rather unreasonable.

(Anonymous) 2010-07-19 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
dude i'm sorry, i understand where you're coming from, but to me it sounds like you're complaining that all fandoms have to be about human beings or that most fandoms take place on earth.

stop dividing het ships and homo ships! enjoy relationships for how they're written and the emotions they inspire in you, not for whether the characters involved have the same genitals or not.

There's none in the One Piece manga! (Which is only the most popular Japanese comic ever in terms of copies sold, and one of the biggest comics world-wide to boot.) Well, except for people's dead parents and one pair of very secondary characters. Not that there are other types of pairing either...

Though honestly, if there are gay and lesbian pairings in whatever canon you're thinking of - although your secret is not worded in a way that makes this clear - is it such a big deal if there's also one measly het pairing in it? For a comic strip example, I would hardly think Sparrow/Stuart invalidates all the lesbian pairings in Dykes To Watch Out for...
