3. Mostly it makes me resent the writers. (Curse you, Kishimoto!!!) Though even in two examples you gave that I'm familiar with... FFVII also has Tifa and Yuffie and Elena and that crazy lady whose name I don't remember and Lucinda, and Naruto has Anko and Ino and Hinata and Tenten and Temari and Tayuya and Tsunade... do you really resent all of them? I'm not trying to say they're perfectly non-stereotypical or anything (but then, what characters are?), but many of them are cool at least in theory, right?

13. XD Dollars to donuts, next week somebody puts up a secret saying "Somebody asked me what time it was today, and I almost told them 'Rape'o'clock'!"

tsunade is the one with the huge chest right(lol how misogynistic of me)?
seriously though, i hate naruto for the most part but i like her! she doesn't bullshit around like many female anime characters.

1. I'm like that with spiders. I can manage it, but it makes my skin absolutely CRAWL. >>'

2. I neither love no hate them. Some really grate me the wrong way, but on the whole I don't want them dead. I'd just prefer that sometimes they'd take a hint and stop babbling about a series I know nothing about. But, I'll admit I've done similar things, so I can't hold it against them. And some of them are so very cute!

5. Well for one, it would take a lot of surgery for Iruka to EVER be that curvey... >>' I'd be with you in thinking that your friend is tracing. No way is it anything else unless she has a very, very bad concept of anatomy and a pretty good grasp of posing. That combination is pretty hard to find portrayed like that.

10. Lucky. ♥

13. RAEP 'O CLOCK~

18. While it doesn't look like Roy, I like the art style. It reminds me of Mexico for unknown reasons.

19. I actually do have something of a "muse" personality, especially for when I'm exceedingly scared or angry. It helps. Other times, especially in RP, I'm a bit of a method actor. In order to play the character, I have to get into their skin a little bit.

So...women are only not OMGTEHSUCK if they are BADASSES?

Gosh. I'd better get out there and kick some ass instead of writing and studying languages.

And God help me if I ever fall in love and am passionate about it, because that makes me weak and stereotypical.

lolololol.

[identity profile] sarajayechan.livejournal.com 2007-05-15 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
1. My cousin and I LOATHE water levels in platform games. Not out of fear, though, we hate 'em cause they make you move slower. (And you can never keep the frog suit long enough in SMB3!)

3. So because I'm going to school instead of kicking ass, haven't saved the world singlehandedly, have emotions and feelings, and have had various boyfriends, I'm automatically stereotypical, boring, generic, and oversexed?

Wow. That just makes me want to shake your hand enthusiastically for revealing this to me! I've just GOT to change into a more dynamic and strong character so that you won't feel bad about your gender!

3. ...I can't comment on most of the characters you have pictured, however, I wholeheartedly disagree with Queen Gorgo being a poorly-written female character. Yeah, she did end up having to have sex, but she was doing it to save the reputation of Sparta and her husband, not because she wanted to get some.

Plus, she stabbed the asshole in the gut afterwards.

You can't get much better than that, especially for the lead female of a very action-oriented, male-centric film. If those qualities make her a weak woman, then I sure as hell don't want to know what your definition of "strong" one is.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_dahne_/ 2007-05-15 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
3. One thing is, in the rare case where the female character isn't shoehorned into the Perfunctory Love Interest role, in Western fandoms, she's invariably cast as the Straight Man. (Of course, Japan is even worse about the wusses and love interests.) Personally, my favorites are almost always the characters who are weird, offbeat, or just plain crazy. But those are hardly ever female roles. It's really too bad.

That said:

3. You don't have to be badass to be an awesome character. =(

4. I get you. I tell myself I'm a writer but the truth is I haven't written in years, so... yeah, I'm probably no better than you are.

Also I think that black blob with the face in your secret is really cute. :0

18. Actually I don't think the picture is that bad. Maybe I'm just weird, but I think your friend has talent... it's a diamond-in-the-rough kind of thing, but it's there. She (he?) just needs to lose those nasty fishlips.

(Anonymous) 2007-05-16 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)

3. I agree with you about crappy writers making crappy characters. Of course, if I hate the female characters in anything, I tend to hate the males too. Because a crappy writer generally makes crappy characters that are not restricted in gender. :/

For the record, I have plenty of favorite female and male characters, and I don't think every female character ever, with the exception of a SHINING FEW, is the devil and automatically useless for falling into a female stereotype. The guys tend to fall into the "LOL FEARLESS FIGHTER OUT TO SAVE THE DAY, GET THE GIRL, AND RESOLVE A FEW PERSONAL ISSUES TO GIVE THE GAME/ANIME/SHOW A MORAL LESSON" stereotype too.

Admittedly, this has made me spiteful to male characters, and I admit to hating half of them simply because they're the male lead and therefore will be the same either depressingly emo 14-18 year old or the stupidly optimistic 14-18 year old, But even so, I have plenty of male characters I adore, not because they're male, but because they were written well and actually undergo development and growth! (Luke fon Fabre! ♥ Best. protagonist. ever.) The same with my girls, I want them to undergo development and growth (Naminé!), or they suck, no matter what the gender is.

DX Just makes me sad to see that the female characters always get the wrath of the fans for bad writing when the males aren't even all that better, they just happen to look good with another male character. Bleh.

3. I'm pretty sick of it myself. But it makes me resent society and it's expectations of us, no us ourselves.

4. Aww, there are tons of ways to get into fandom. RPing isn't the only way. I've met and befriended a couple of really cool people from this comm alone. Yes, there's something intimate about writing as characters within a small (or large) community of people you've never met before, btu there are other ways. There are forums, or single-fandom comms, that you can participate in :)

5. ...Ew. Dude, that's all they do? That's not art, that's like...bullshit. I mean, I started out when I was EIGHT with tracing panels from the Sailor Moon manga...but I GOT OUT OF IT. ...Sheesh. They must be REALLY self-conscious about drawing freehand. They'd probably freak or something :P

6. *laughs* It's the same with my mom, me, and Sailor Moon. Pretty damn sad.

10. I've experienced the same with the Naruto fandom! It's got such a bad rap, but... I've never had a problem :/ I've only met really really cool people and seen great crack. The [livejournal.com profile] sasuxnaru comm recently had an intelligent, well-mannered open discussion about what we all thought about how the relationship (whether platonic or not) had evolved from original arc to Shippuuden. It's moments like that that make me love fandom.

11. Daffy is the SHIT, dude XD

16. ...Who the hell ARE they?

17. That's...a really gorgeous fanart *_* I'd love to read his death scene XD (I'm not a hater...I'm just curious XD)

19. Aww, I'm sorry :( I've never experienced muses like that... I'm only grateful that they give me fanart ideas or help me RP well.

I'm glad a couple of people said it, I was starting to worry about you guys!

I don't think that's a bad picture by any stretch. It mightn't look exactly like Roy, but I think the style of the artwork accounts for that a great deal. Yeah, zomg, that fan art isn't perfect. But it's good! And if the artist keeps drawing, the results will get better! Hoorah!

I'm just amazed this secret calls a good picture a 'trainwreck', and people haven't really called them out on it, you know? Not least of all because advising someone to stop working at something is kinda sad :(

Re: 18

(Anonymous) 2007-05-16 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
But it's not a "good" picture by any means. There's quite a bit wrong with it, in terms of just basic, basic techniques and the base drawing.

It's not a complete trainwreck, but it's not good either.

3) Because a woman has to be bad ass to be awesome? Sorry, no. A good character depends on how they're written. They can be a love interest and be awesome.

Also? Men have the same problems, they're just different stereotypes. Funny, how people tend not to care about that.

God I hate how fandom goes about treating female characters.
