Yeah the OP is totally sexist because video games are sexist and almost all female characters in them are terrible

or maybe not

Protip: Find a female character who isn't a total stereotype. Then dress like her. Problem solved. Good night.

Is this a good time to mention that I wear the various components of my BLu Sniper cosplay as casual clothing? Especially the shirt. And the aviators.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Part of it isnt just finding SOME female character...
Part of the disappointment is finding a female character from a game or movie i actually enjoy right now. you know, fandom sort of thing? some people write porn and draw porn. I just like to dress it casual.

And its harder to do than you make it sound!

Also, heh, I dress a little like scout for cardio class v_v minus the socks.

Come on, OP!

Girls can wear lovely skirts and shiny dresses! Have flowers and pins in their hair! Use make-up and paint their nails any color they want! Wear colorful, bright necklaces and amazing earrings!

I could go on forever...

Seriously, you should never hate your own gender and especially not for something like this. Being a man has its advantages, yeah, but so has being a woman! :)

Suggestion: smash the patriarchy.

But, seriously, don't hate being a girl just because a bunch of male gamemakers can't write women properly.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
When you try to dress like your favorite characters, are you wearing clothes that are made for men? If so, the fit could be why they don't look as good on you.
I used to wear boy's jeans, and in retrospect, they looked pretty awful on me - too baggy in some places and too tight in others. I'd suggest getting pants made to fit a woman's body and pairing those with shirts snagged from the boy's section. Maybe that would give you a good mix of not too girly and not too baggy.
I hope you find clothes you can be comfortable and confident in, anon.

The male body is shaped very differently from the female body; clothes are usually made to fit one or the other. Male clothes can look very unflattering on the female form, because of the different curves. That doesn't mean you can't put together a cool outfit inspired by a man's style but tailored for a woman, though. Good luck.

I have to agree with you OP, there are very few female videogame characters who dress in a way that I'd like to dress. But dressing in guy character clothes, especially if you're curvey, can be kinda problematic cos they make you look bigger. However, if you get the guy clothes, you can sew in the sides a bit, to make them slightly more flattering, but youve still got the same look :)

But really op, girls are more lucky since they have a wider range of clothes that they can wear without being judged.

If I ever met a girl that dressed like Travis Touchdown I'd want to fucking marry her. Or at least go with her to a seedy motel. ;D

Actually that would piss off my girlfriend and I don't really like doing that (unless it's hilarious), so I'd probably just stand acceptably far away and stare like a creeper. But I'd still think you're hot.

...too tired to think of a list right now, but ::there are:: strong, well-rounded VG female characters around. Quite a lot of them, even though the percentage is indeed abysmal. I hope you'll find them in your favourite genres!

(Me? I'd dress like this lady (http://pcmedia.gamespy.com/pc/image/article/645/645874/440yeesha_1125097169.jpg) 24/7, and I have been incorporating elements of the series' style in my everyday clothing. Plus ideas snatched here and there from my favourite fandoms and it feels great! <3)

Go for it! Cosplay guys! No fan's body looks exactly like that of the character who they're trying to dress up as. Try to be happy just because of the outfit: it's a costume, not something that has to actually be flattering on you. Also, try to find costume pieces that fit you: buy clothes in the women's section that look like the men's costumes. It doesn't have to be exactly screen accurate, just have fun with it.

If there's one thing I love about being a woman, it's that our clothes are alot more varied than guys' clothes are.

Seriously, as a woman, you can't find clothes that make you look awesome? I call bullshit.

Stop trying to look like game characters and just start trying to look good in your own right. Jesus.

Wow there are a lot of responses for this XD I have no idea what anyone else said, but seriously, wear what you want to. If you're friends judge you for what you wear and not for the content of your soul, then you need new friends anyways.

Girls look really good in guy clothes, or even adaptions of a male outfit. Like the picture you posted with your secret is pretty easy; jeans, red jacket, sneakers, white shirt. Pretty basic and no one would judge you for it. I'd go to a cosplay forum and for whatever outfit you're looking to adapt (esp fantasy stuff) then think of ways to convert it into everyday wear and not *exactly* what the character is wearing. Also you don't have to buy male clothing if it won't look good on you either.

As far as being jealous of male anatomy; I'd try not to think on it so much and work with what you have. There are a lot of things you can do to be 20x more attractive than a male. Having a vagina doesn't make you less attractive.

Learn to sew. Even if you hate it. Because from what you've said in the comments, you have a body shape which is going to be difficult to find flattering clothes for no matter where you are in the store. If you know how to alter clothes, or better yet make them from scratch, you'll be able to make what you want, in the fabric you want it to be in. (I shop the men's department because most of the clothes out there for women are made out of tissue paper.)

Hang around with the cosplayers. Yes, I know you're not cosplaying, you're going for everyday clothes, but cosplayers are likely to know how to sew, and very likely to know the best vintage/used stores where you can find cheap clothes to experiment with when you're learning to alter storebought clothes.

Think boots. Especially workboots. Won't kill your ankles and don't look particularly masculine or feminine, just practical.

And anyone who thinks that women have soooo many options for clothes and it's all wonderful and of course you can wear high heels for one day and just suck it up sister can go jump in a lake. Women's tops have sleeves of stupid lengths, high heels can kill your ankles in five minutes, and dresses - feh! Unless you're willing to spend over a hundred bucks they either make you look like you're on the make or you borrowed your clothes from your grandmother.

Wear what you like wearing.

I tend to try to dress like musicians I like (icon related), luckily most of the male ones have a rather androgynous look to them, so I don't have to worry too much (though I've cross-dressed before several times and IDGAF).

I do feel like we need more androgynously-dressed female video game characters.

I relate, OP. Boy do I relate. My entire life I've liked men's clothing more than women's clothing, so I just went out and bought men's clothes. I'm luckier than you in a way: I have the opposite body type (tall, broad shoulders, narrow hips) and they look fantastic on me.

But here's the rub: particularly with short hair, but even with waist-length hair, I was mistaken for a man more often than not. I'm a straight, cis-gendered woman, and it got really grating. I wasn't cross dressing, I wasn't trying to "pass", I was just a woman who liked men's clothing. From the sounds of it you're not going to have that problem.

What you want are male-style clothing tailored for women. I heartily recommend 5.11 Tactical (http://www.511tactical.com/Shop) (where Leon shops!) because you'll be able to buy Leon's clothing - as in exactly what he wears - but tailored to your body type, in the women's section. They're meant for female first responders, so you'll be wearing what women who go into situations like the women in video games actually wear.

There are plenty of sites that cater to women who want to wear boyish clothes, as well. You're going to have to do more work than most girls, but from the sounds of it it'll be worth it.

(Not going to touch your comments about video game characters for now - but as someone who went through what you went through, trust me: it's not them, it's you. The reason you find Leon Kennedy more badass than Jill Valentine isn't because Jill Valentine is less badass - heck, the fact that she fights everything he does in Nemesis in her civvies makes her more badass, if anything, but yes RE1 and RE5 Gold are more indicative of what she'd normally wear during an operation, yes - it's because you relate to Leon Kennedy more than Jill Valentine. And that's okay. You can be a woman who relates more to men. I do. And yeah, women like us could be better-represented in the media, for sure. But it doesn't make women any less awesome - they're just often awesome in a different way.

That and Jill Valentine could probably kick Leon's ass. She's a fucking operator, man. Ex-Delta Force. That shit's canon. Leon's just a cop.)

so where the hell do you live, OP? Unisex fashion has been in, like, years. The trainers/jeans/t-shirt combo is classic. Most gals I know manage to look gorgeous without heels or obmoxious tops or excessive make-up. But this is probably due to the fact they are actually nice to people to people, and I somehow doubt that's your case, given your general attitude. No offence. I've been there too, believe me. Seriously, as long as you're pleasant to be with, people won't give two shits about what are you wearing (unless you're still in high school?).

And speaking as a fellow fan of NMH, I always loved Sylvia :c She's so wonderfully sociopathic I just can't help it. But I also like Bayonetta, so I guess I just like camp?

And if you're looking for some great female characters, check out Megaten series. That is, you know, if you actually care about ttheir personalities and are willing to look past the fact the look like average women ( i.e. no amping of sex appeal or anything like that).
