a good portion of fandom dislikes the movies and think they didn't do the books justice.

You didn't like the Lord of the Rings movies either, huh?

You are not alone. HP ended (for me) with the books, even though I stayed in the fandom for a few years afterward. But the movies are awful as a whole (though there are moments in each that work well individually) and I'm still deciding if I even want to see part two of the seventh.

I never liked the HP movies. Neither do my my friends and so many other people. You're definately not alone OP.

[identity profile] mistaria.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know that two hour movies were ever going to do the books justice. I always wondered why they didn't try doing three hour movies (it's not like they can say it's wrong for the age group when tons of young kids went out to see all the LOTR movies)... especially for OotP, which was the longest book but the shortest movie.

I do separate the movies from the books and I just watch them for little funny moments. That said I don't think it's wrong to complain about them (but people do get tired of it if that's all you do). I have a friend who has only ever seen the first movie. She's never said she hates the movies but she loves Potter so I don't know why she wouldn't go unless that was it.

As for people who only see the movies... I honestly don't know how they manage to follow everything without having knowledge of the books.

I felt the same way. I mean, I didn't hate the movies, but even thinking of them as totally separate from the books, they just never did anything for me, and it's confusing to me when people put them at par with the novels. But then, whatever.

[identity profile] hungry-mortal.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I wholeheartedly agree with you.

[identity profile] zelda-dragon.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
The only movie I truly enjoyed was the first one. It did so well at capturing the magic of the book and portraying it on screen. The others...well, I really don't care for them.

The movies drive me up the wall. I never saw the sixth (if I did, I've blocked it from my memories) nor 7 part 1. I doubt I'll see this one. I'm just so disappointed.

I really wish that they had done LotR type stuff with it... if they had to be shorter for the theater release, why not sell super-extended ones where they stopped cutting plot for the sake of adding things like Dancing Lessons or Dragon Battles all around the castle?

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The books will always be far better than the movies, IMO, but the movies still have something to offer to the overall experience. Besides, just seeing it all play out on a screen rather than just in my head is thrilling (except for the times when they get it horribly, horribly wrong). And at this point I'll take anything I can get because I miss & love the whole thing so much. ;___;

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a lot of love for the movies for what they did right, but indeed, it's a rare film that I really think did the book justice. But I also think all the people saying it's the END OF AN ERA are....like, wut. For me it ended with the books. I'm still there for every movie in the midnight line, but I'm freaking out over DHpt2 only in the sense that OH MY FUCK I'M GONNA HAVE TO WATCH ALL THESE PEOPLE I LOVE DIE, not because anything's ENDING. I can't WAIT for the books to get adapted again :D

[identity profile] ell-de-gothia.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I've hated the movies. I still think most of them are really bad (except for the first one, I recently watched that and it's really cute). I threw stuff at the screen when I was younger during the third movie. The sixth movie was a disaster in so many ways (except Michael Gambon was brilliant as Dumbledore).

BUT.

BUT.

DH1? It was so freaking amazing. I don't know if it's because I hadn't read the books in so long, but I really enjoyed it. I thought it was great, and most people I've talked to agreed with me, it was a good movie. It's like they finally made a movie for the fans.

I still don't think anything will end after this movie. I've heard people say that for the past four (!?) years about different things, and it's never really over. Won't stop me from going all out and dress up and everything for the midnight premier though! :P

Fuck it, I love the movies for what they are. ::shrugs:: I also love the cast, though, so that may have something to do with it.

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Watched the first three movies and didn't feel any need to go any further. They could've gotten better for all I know, but for me, Harry Potter is a book series. (Not active in the fandom, though.)

[identity profile] la-localfreak.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You are most certainly not alone.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I agree so much you won't believe. IMHO, the only thing about the movies that measured up to the books in terms of quality was the theme music, which was so pitch-perfectly appropriate for the series I felt as though I had been hearing it in my head before it was even written.

Everything else? A pale, sloppy, tooth-grinding imitation.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I only cared about the movies when I had to wait for the books to be released. I like re-reading my books but with HP I don't know, the story was over and I didn't want to live it again.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never read the books, I have only watched the movies. I watch the movies for fun and because I like Draco...and because I'm lazy and don't want to read those books that almost everyone I ask says are bad.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-02 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm that person sitting in the back of the theater snarking at everything and complaining that Harry's eyes aren't green.

So yes, I share your sentiments.

It ended for me a lot sooner than that. It's sad.

[identity profile] zanah0ria.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the movies, BUT they don't come even close to the books, and I think 90% of the fandom thinks that way. And the other 10% probably didn't read the books.
So no, you're not alone at all. Many of us are just excited about the movie because it's, hey, it's Harry Potter but we will still bitch about the way they cut/change the scenes in the movie theater (I know I will).

I like the movies, but I'm baffled at how many people are saying that the last movie will be ~the end of an era~ when the books were finished years ago. I tend to think of movie adaptations of books as visual supplements of sorts: nice, but not as important as the original.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-03 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you up until your last line, OP. I don't hate the movies, but I've never thought much of them. I severely do not understand the outpouring of emotion over the last movie and the cries of "it's all ending!!" It ended four years ago for me - there's nothing new in the movies, they don't add anything (for me) to the experience, the series is already over... I just seriously don't get it.

[identity profile] shinyhappypanic.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate the movies, but I was never a huge fan, so I can sympathize with this. With the 7/8th movie, I'm kind of interested but not actually excited, while with the 7th book, I got really freaked out and upset when I thought about it coming.
