Older habits are harder to break.
But I guess you've never had any bad habits that took a lifetime to get over, if at all.

Or are we saying it does?
Okay, then.

This. So much this. I'm sick to death of Snape fans condemning Sirius for never growing up when he was in a hellhole prison paying for the death of the Potters, which SNAPE helped set up.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)Snape lost a friend due to his own faults. THEN, instead of like, cleaning up his act, and maybe not hang out with the kids who were hating on muggle-borns and playing up the pureblood bs, he decided to go full Death Eater. Further proving that he had learned absolutely nothing. THEN, he was completely okay with the idea that Lily's husband and infant child would be murdered, so long as Lily would be safe.
The only reason he ever tried to do any small bit of good in his life was because Lily died. Snape chose not to grow up. He chose to dwell on the past (and also his bitterness and resentment) so much that it stunted his growth as a person.
Snape and Sirius probably had about the same level of maturity, but consider which one was the person that had spent 13 years in a literally soul-sucking prison, and which one hadn't. Snape has no such justification for his complete lack of maturity. He's just one sad, bitter motherfucker.

Sirius never got a chance to really grow as a person because he got himself killed by telling Harry to "take more risks." Sure, his owning up to it and rescuing Harry in the time of need was good and noble and one of many reasons why it was a tragedy he died. And he was technically killed by Bellatrix and the veil, but what got him in that situation were the remarks he made to Harry out of anger due to his own personal hang ups and boredom. And no, I don't think being in prison unjustly changes that. People are more than their experiences.

(Anonymous) 2011-08-07 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)Nope. When asked about that, Rowling said the following:
Veritaserum works best upon the unsuspecting, the vulnerable and those insufficiently skilled (in one way or another) to protect themselves against it. Barty Crouch had been attacked before the potion was given to him and was still very groggy, otherwise he could have employed a range of measures against the Potion - he might have sealed his own throat and faked a declaration of innocence, transformed the Potion into something else before it touched his lips, or employed Occlumency against its effects. In other words, just like every other kind of magic within the books, Veritaserum is not infallible. As some wizards can prevent themselves being affected, and others cannot, it is an unfair and unreliable tool to use at a trial.
Sirius might have volunteered to take the potion had he been given the chance, but he was never offered it. Mr. Crouch senior, power mad and increasingly unjust in the way he was treating suspects, threw him into Azkaban on the (admittedly rather convincing) testimony of many eyewitnesses. The sad fact is that even if Sirius had told the truth under the influence of the Potion, Mr. Crouch could still have insisted that he was using trickery to render himself immune to it
