Many don't, and angst about other stuff... some people just have a higher tolerance for emotional/whatever pain, and judge characters by their own scale and not yours. Them's the breaks?

Sometimes characters DO need to get over themselves, in my opinion. And as for the cleaning-room whiners, people are allowed to be hypocrites? It doesn't make them WRONG when they say the first thing, though.

And I'm guessing, in well-written canon, it's because they may have emotional support. Sorry if I can't bitch about a character whose life sucks and they've got no family and friends because their family was slaughtered and they're afraid to open up again.

It's not always about having more emotional strength; it's often about not having to go through crap and thus being normal and having a better perspective.

GOD CHARACTER A SUCKS BECAUSE THE ONLY PERSON HE'D EVER WANTED TO LOVE HIM KILLED HIS TWIN SISTER. HE NEED TO GET OVER HIMSELF AND STOP WHINING, EVEN THOUGH HE REALLY DOESN'T.

PS MY MOM SUCKS FOR GROUNDING ME FOR NOT CLEANING MY ROOM.

I'm sorry, I'll laugh at the stupidity.

There may be a story out there where a character who needs to get over themselves. I can't really think of a character like that in any canon I follow.

I didn't say they were BAD CHARACTERS, I said I DISLIKED THEM. I PERSONALLY DO NOT LIKE THIS CHARACTER. I'm allowed to have an opinion right? I have a personal scale by which I judge people. So does everybody. And not everybody's scale is the same. OH WAIT NVM, YOU'RE LAUGHING AT MY STUPIDITY I BETTER CHANGE LOLZ.

Um no. I do not mind if people dislike characters. There are characters I dislike.

However there is a big difference between I DISLIKE A CHARACTER and that character needs to get over themselves.

The only thing I honestly laughed at you about was your comment that if your parents hated you you'd flip them off. Though I do feel very sorry for you if you've grown up in environment to where you'd deal with something so painful like that in that manner.

Well... if I'm allowed to have a personal opinion about whether I like a character or not... I'm allowed to have a personal opinion about whether -I think-, based on -my- scale, that a certain character is weak/needs to get over themselves, right? You can disagree. You just can't tell me that I CANT DO SO.

If that's true then I feel horrible for you. If you've grown up in an environment like that the your detachment is horrible.

How about, say a dear friend of yours suddenly starts hating you? Wouldn't you feel horrible?

For my case, someone I love hating me would be terrible because I derive so much from my loved ones. To no longer have that is... It's like losing part of myself.

Uhhh well if a dear friend started hating me for no reason I'd be like "well uhhh ok, can I do something to make you not hate me? No? I guess you hate me then." I care for my friends, care deeply, sure. I LIKE my parents. They're cool people. But if people decide to hate me then well uh. I guess they hate me. I mean wtf am I supposed to do, is angsting about it going to help me?

Too many people don't think a character has a right to be emo and bash them.

I doubt that people would say that a character that has clear reasons TO angst has NO reason to angst... they would just disagree on the amount of angst "allowed" (for lack of a better word) before it gets you know, "overdone."

But again, that's venturing into difference-of-opinion where we clearly don't agree, so. *dies*

Then again, I hate the word emo. It seems to disregard the pain a character is suffering. Even more so when it applies to a real person.

Wow, I love you. Someone else who can't stand that word and the implications behind it. People seem to forget that part of being human is feeling sad sometimes, that everyone has a normal scale of varying emotions. Being chastised for having an understandably emotional reaction to situations has always struck me as ridiculous. Denying fictional characters their humanity is eyeroll-worthy enough, but real people? Come on.
