I agree. Hedwig's dead is the one that affected me the most as well for the same reason. That, and animal deaths in stories like these always seem a bit... I dunno. They have nothing to do with the conflict. She probably didn't care about the whole wizard war and just wanted to be with Harry, y'know? I just wanted to scream 'Leave her out of it!'
...
But then again, that was probably the whole point. Nobody was safe at this point in the story. Nobody at all.

This isn't the only reason why I book 7 sucked, but I kinda hated JK for this when I read it. Sure, death happens but come on it's Hedwig!

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
yep, it was sad news to see hedwig die. But it was great news when Harry got that ever-so-soft warm feather pillow as an anonymous gift though.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Harry actually had a lot of relationships in canon that seemed closer and truer than Hedwig. They weren't exactly Timmy and Lassie.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I cried so hard that I had to set the book aside to grab some tissues too. I didn't think I would have that reaction because I never thought Hedwig would die. But I understand why JKR had Hedwig die. It still didn't make Hedwig's death any less sad though. It reflected back to me that my childhood is also over.

Hedwig dies? Well, fuck.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I heartless for not getting that the love for a pet shouldn't be quite up there with siblings or children or...

my husband thinks I'm weird for crying more for Hedwig than Dobby.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I got why Hedwig had to die, the trio needed to be isolated and she would have made that impossible, being able to bring them news and help them communicate with the Order and all. But it was still incredibly painful and took me by surprise. It's the first death of an established character in the book, if I remember correctly, and it really set that anyone can die tone.

...Ugh.

OT I know but this really hits home today, lost a pet this morning.

That part was too sad.

I canot express how much my dog means to me, so I get it even though I'm not that into Poter.

[He helps me unwind, reminds me how to play like a fool, is the reason when I am "unemployed" (I'm a temp) that I am able to stay sane, and having him has led me to learn a lot of ASL (he's deaf), also he's freaking adorable, and last winter when my landlords refused to admit my bedroom window was broken kept me warm at night :D]

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it really affected me too, OP. I just imagined if it was my dog, Shiloh, and . . . argh.

That said, I prefer her death in the movie, actually. In the book she was defenseless, but in the movie she died trying to protect Harry. I thought it was more noble/a better testament to her character.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
This was the only death I cried about.
Yeah, call me twisted. I don't care. The animals kind of just follow their owner out of "blind" loyalty and trust. They don't exactly understand what they are getting into... and that makes it all the more sad to me.

It made me sadfais a lot. A lot lot. But it didn't affect me as much as Fred's death.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-09-03 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It didn't affect me like this because honestly I just don't feel an emotional connection to animals. There's a Tina Fey quote out there about how she just doesn't get feeling that, and I'm the same way.

Idk, I've just never had a pet and so I don't really know the feeling. The death was sad, though. :( Not the saddest for me personally, but.

(Anonymous) 2011-09-03 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I was completely devastated by Hedwig's death :(

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
... I don't mean to be dismissive of what I'm sure is an incredibly strong emotion for you, but I find it ridiculously patronising that you "feel sad" for me just because I don't agree that Hedwig is Harry's "closest and truest" friend. Sure, Hedwig was loyal, but also she was a minor character and Harry had some pretty awesome friends.

It's just, like, different strokes, y'know? You feel sad Hedwig died and you're entitled to feel that way. I don't, but it doesn't mean I can't understand love or whatever. :\

This week my pet bird that I have had for the last 9 years died. Loss of a pet is a terrible, horrible thing. Anon, I totally understand your secret. It's something that people who have never had pets don't understand, but thankfully for me, most of the ones around me understand how they enrich our lives.

I agree with the above poster, too, that I think it was done as a dramatic "no one is safe" move because in a way animal death and cruelty hurts our psyches more generally than violence to our fellow human beings. It's interesting how that works.

[identity profile] micromyni.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I agree 100%.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hedwig and Fred's deaths were the worst for me :(

(Anonymous) 2011-09-04 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it saddened me too. I was more shocked that JKR offed her like that, but I guess it was bittersweet. She saved Harry and took a "bullet" for him. Thinking about it, I think it was the death I was most sad for out of the series because of how it happened and the meaning behind the gesture. It did set the mood perfectly though. At that point, shit got real.

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-09-04 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. It makes me want to go home and hug my bird </3

Animal deaths in movies are heartbreaking. I cannot tell you how long I cried when I saw Hachi: A Dog's Tale omg ;___;

This. My friend was all "oh it represented the final death of his childhood and was important so don't be so upset blah blah" but I bawled my eyes out when she died.
