I know he did. And I'm not holding him responsible for his actions in Book 1. I actually think that's the most initiative he takes in the whole series in proportion to the information he has. He barely knows a thing but he knows enough to know that something is wrong and that he's gonna try to help out.

The reason this story works is because the characters are very human.

Humans also have some sense of self-preservation. And the fact that he just relies on luck so much is another thing that bothers me. When I was a teenager, I slacked off and didn't do what I should. But my life and the lives of those around me were never in mortal peril. So the comparison between Harry and normal teenagers doesn't apply. He's NOT normal. That's the firs thing we ever learn about him.

lol you're not in a lot of fandom are you? A lot of fandom I'm in do the opposite. You'd be amazed how crazy the ATLA fandom and other fandoms are where 90% is het. So no, not true.

I was just thinking that Cimerone is older than most of Miyazaki's heroines. But I don't think his adaptations are meant to be "faithful". He tends to take a story and put his own spin on it, which can be good or bad.

Or they could legitimately have a low sex drive. It is true that not everyone wants sex. (Still doesn't mean that the rest of the world has been brainwashed into having erections by "the media", though.)

Agreed. Usually I'm not especially fussed about whether an adaptation is totally faithful as long as it's enjoyable in its own right, which I know Howl's Moving castle was for some people, but the generic triteness of the characterizations of Miyazaki's Howl and Sophie pretty much ruined the movie for me.

The voice is a big block to me totally getting over it. I dunno in other versions of Moriarty I wish they'd go easy on the ham. It's hilarious I feel that way considering Ratigan is the largest ham in the world!

I want to read this, but there are sections I can't because of contrast issues.

That said, I get that in any cross section of humanity and randomly assorted group you are going to get some people who are just not very bright. I put the little girl and her mom in the IQ below 80 part of the bell curve. Perfectly nice people, just rather dim. That said, in all fairness, if there were ever a situation where being dim = being dead, this would be it.

I just wish that the show weren't so hell bent on being completely random with the killing and would actually show people dying because they made stupid decisions. That's the way mother nature works 90 percent of the time. But no, instead we randomly kill off people who are doing absolutely nothing wrong, and these two get a pass.
