There's no 'getting even' involved.

What I'm talking about is context. Sexual objectification is not in and of itself bad, it's the context of how it's been forced on women for men's satisfaction that makes the exploitation of women's sexuality by men bad. Because that context doesn't exist when it comes to men being exploited by women, sexually objectifying them isn't a problem. See?

[identity profile] magnetic-regina.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I'm amazed that "I'm bothered by the way people exclusively writing m/m adds to the way fandom overlooks women" apparently translates to "I think any person who writes m/m should stop writing what they enjoy." At no point did I tell you to stop, so no need to be so defensive.
oxfordtweed: A large group of zombies reaches toward the camera (Zombies - Swarm)

I never sad that

In fact, I left that comment before I even noticed that the thread was a mile long and full of idiocy. I'm just not sure what this comm's rules are in regard to comment deletion, so I didn't delete mine.

Although, this is exactly the sort of thing I meant, if I'm honest. I don't participate in these sorts of debates because I'm wrong no matter what I say. =/

lolwut

saying someone's being an asshole =/= stanning for the person they're arguing with

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I am with you, anon, entirely. I feel like fandom has almost ruined him for me. I think he's fascinating, in part because he's a complete fucking asshat and I want to kick him in the face. But the way fandom romanticizes everything about him makes me resent hearing his name. I even resent the word "Always".

I don't take people seriously when they say he's their favourite character and then go off about how honorable and kind and selfless and sexy (WUT) he was. That's not Snape, guys, that's Alan Rickman in Sense & Sensibility or some shit, not the dickhead Potions master who bullied his students and invented violent dark magic and took out his personal fucked up emotions on an 11 year old boy. It's kind of telling when you have to blame all his wrongdoings on the people around him just to make him remotely likable.

Unless it's "Lesbian Spank Inferno."

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
You weren't doing too badly until you pulled that card. Holy shit, do you live in a basement in sweatpants?

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I think we both win just for not being him. Or, you know, for not having enough self-disrespect to date him. :-)

Yes i have a grudge against annoying people.

Re: Numbered lists keep me from exploding.

[identity profile] saturnonjupiter.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
WHAT YOU THINK =/= WHAT ANYONE ELSE HAS TO THINK.
-
same goes for you sweetheart, you seem to think that I should subscribe to your apparently more open-minded opinion.
guess what dickhead, you might as well go form some gay nazi club because if you honestly believe EVERYONE has to subscribe to homosexuality for all YEAH it's great WOOHOO and can't accept some people do have valid reasons to disagree, you're no better than them.

alright proves you're an idiot. you have no problem changing het chars to gay or bi, but you do with gay ones, because OMG GAYS HAVE IT SOOOO HARD IRL?
you're an absolute idiot. you only PERPETUATE the difference between heterosexuality and homosexuality by maintaining there is ANY difference.
do you see one as less or more worthy than the other?? why in the WORLD does it matter which way the character is changed from, it's still not right to disregard that element of them.

how utterly pathetic you don't understand that while you think differentiating the two makes your cause stronger you really just encourage the divide to grow wider. WHY IS THERE A DIFFERENCE? please, tell me, what makes it so right to do things one way just because 'gays got forced to act straight' in the past. you don't think straight people being forced to act gay, should that happen, is just as wrong?
really?
how sick in the head are you lol

go on whatever tl;dr about me being a 'homophobic bigot', that totes isn't true. i have no fear of homosexuality nor am i against homosexual people. i don't think homosexuality itself is anything positive and some of the most hateful, spiteful, vindictive people i have met have been homosexuals who try and shove their flamboyance down everyone else's throats.
but i'm SURE that's only because people like me carry on the flag of HOMOPHOBIA. herp derp.

idgaf what color a character is in a show. the character should be cast properly, regardless of race. i think it's stupid to MAKE a character any specific ethnicity or culture or anything similar because then you are JUST doing it to pander to a minority's wishes instead of for the quality of the show.
if a character works as black/asian/a little green man then go for it, but don't delude yourself into thinking forcing token minorities into fiction is any sort of good idea. looooooool. it's MUCH better to not have a black character at all than to have a poorly written one that the writer(s) struggle developing because the original personality just doesn't match the actor and they HAD TO HIRE a black actor because OMG DIVERSITY MUST BE FORCED.
diversity should be natural you moron.

look champ, you seem to not understand how humanity BREEDS. that is: HETEROSEXUALITY, via HETEROSEXUAL SEX. that is the default for me because that's how we survive on as a race. if you want to think something else well alright but uhhh you're probs just clueless.

i can see by the fact almost every sentence of yours contains 'homophobe', 'bigot' or some other attempted insult you legitimately have nothing more constructive to say, nor do you seem to acknowledge some people are PERFECTLY within their bounds to view heterosexuality as the normal orientation for a race that requires heterosexual intercourse to reproduce.
congrats on proving why gay people don't deserve rights - you don't respect the rights of others in the slightest :U

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed. Not only did he receive no sympathy or support for his loss, for the first ten years all he got was how much his aunt and uncle hate them. On top of that, when he does make it to the Wizarding world everyone is so enamored of him and talks about his parents so highly, but also very sparingly. And some of those people who do talk about his parents (ie, Draco and Snape) do so to insult one or both of them.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Is that a "Coupling" reference? You can't see me, but I'm high fiving my laptop screen

[identity profile] bellerose11788.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I am in quite a few fandoms and it seems almost any anime manga or tv show has way more slash than het. ATLA is something i never got into ship wise because it squicks me, and because i had friends start fights over kataang or zutara. But just to name a few slash majority fandoms: SPN, One Piece, Bleach, Harry Potter, DMC Etc. Some slash fangirls try to act like they are being oppressed in the fandom world when it is clearly not true.

[identity profile] bellerose11788.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I stay away from hardcore sf/fantasy fandoms because they just seem to be anti-woman in general. Which makes sense that they wouldn't like slash since most of them are male.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I can definitely say that if some douchebag says "you're fat, so you must hate men" or "you hate men, you sound fat" within my hearing in real life, I sure do-diddly respond the same way with my voice that I do in typing on here to the same impetus. I'm no saint, and I'm not about to be walked on.

[identity profile] bellerose11788.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I get what you are saying and there are annoying slashers on both sides of the fence. I just can't see why people can't just ship what they want and not get on other people for doing something different. I mean if i wanna see a ship between Trafalgar Law and Doflamingo then i will just write it and not care what other people think of it. The victim attitude is really annoying. No one is oppressing them for liking their ship. Get over it.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's a ... film collective, where each of the ladies judges each other's short film ... and the loser gets a spanking! Harsh - but effective. ;-)

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very glad that you appreciate my comments. I'm with you on hating certain sectors of fandom. It can be really difficult to find the awareness and caring that is required when dealing with depression/PTSD/trauma/etc.

No one is obligated to like a character just because they have depression or other emotional problems, but they shouldn't write them off because of those emotional problems. It shouldn't be about "oh he's so whiney because woe is him, his parents are dead and now he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. oh boo hoo."

What always gets me is none of the people who act this way would respond any better. It is so beyond unlikely that anyone would be able to cope in a healthy way with such things, but people always get down on the hero who is human and not beyond such things as trauma. I feel it's not just inability to relate but the assumption that heroes must be infallible.

It is so frustrating and upsetting.

[identity profile] nymosy.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
this author (http://www.amanuensis1.com/mainfanficpage.html) is great at writing harry as reacting bravely to traumatic situations, if you can stomach rape fic.

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
You also assume that everyone responds to trauma and abuse in the same way. When I was fourteen and furious at the world for my mother's death, struggling with not only all of the teenaged angst but also all the things that came along with her death, no one who didn't know me would know what I was going through or how strongly it affected me.

There is no absolute way to define how every single person will react to and act after experiencing trauma. One person may break down and cry, another may stand up and push those feelings down, another may ignore them so completely they do not even know they are there.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't really bug me much, myself, from what I've seen in the trailers that aren't shot entirely in the dark.

(Anonymous) 2011-10-24 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
...I can never unthink this.

NEVER.

EVER.

Re: OP HERE.

[identity profile] nicheledres.livejournal.com 2011-10-24 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
And yes, every single person I have met who likes Supernatural (and it's a lot) are very attracted to one or both of them.

Hi, OP! My name is Nichele, and I've been watching Supernatural since season 3. In all honesty, I do NOT find either Jensen or Jared hot. So now you have met at least one person who likes the show but doesn't find either character all that attractive. :)

I mean, don't get me wrong: I don't think they're ugly or anything. It's just that neither is my type. (As a side note, I do find Misha attractive, but that's based more on his personality and sense of humor than anything else. But even if it was based on looks, that's not even close to enough to keep me involved in a show.)

Personally, I got into the show because it was quirky and kind of silly, and that combination often made me laugh despite the sometimes gruesome nature of the storylines (which is not usually my thing). I always liked that the show never took itself too seriously and wasn't afraid to go places that most would consider "jumping the shark." I mean, what other show has avidly made fun of its own fans the way Supernatural has?

But yeah, there you go. Just wanted you to know that we're not all here for the pretty. :)
