from the way people react to this series you'd think they'd never read a bad book in their life.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
As an ESL, that tumblr is a godsend.

I've only ever read bad books in other languages, so it's nice to see the English version of bad writing and how to fix it. The things that are considered mistakes in English are not always the same in other languages, so it's nice to learn more about the specifics. I wish I had learned all that stuff in school!

That's pretty cool. My neighbours niece is from Japan and has come to stay with her to improve her english. Part of this involves reading Twilight. I'm trying to convince them that this is a bad idea. Girl needs some Tamora Peirce in her life.

Reasoning with Vampires is made of the purest epic win.

I love that tumblr blog. It's the first time I've encountered someone who is going over what is good writing and what isn't with easy to understand examples. (They probably aren't the first and only ones to do that on the internet EVER, but they're the first I stumbled upon.)

My understanding of what is and what isn't good writing has literally multiplied, and I think I'm becoming a better writer since reading that.

I, um, don't really care about the Twilight aspect of it. I'm just in it for the grammar and writing lessons. :I

O_o?

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Twilight is a good example of how not to write a book? Say hey? In what universe do you live in where Twilight is anything but an incredible success that has made it's writer enormously famous, incredibly influential both in the literary and real world, and fabulously wealthy.

Or are you saying that this blog is a good example of how not to write a book?

Re: O_o?

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
How not to write a book is not the same thing as how not to be successful. Twilight may be successful, but it is badly written tripe not to mention portraying an abusive relationship as healthy.

Re: O_o?

[identity profile] raichu100.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
The thing about that, though, is then you have to ask who decides that it's good. Obviously lots and lots of people do think it's good.

Re: O_o?

Well it really depends on what the purpose of the book is. The purpose of Twilight was to write a book that would give people some escapist entertainment. It succeeds very well.

Your criteria for "good book" seems awfully arbitrary.

oh my god, thank you for saying this.

[identity profile] lemon-m.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
I like it because of they point out the grammatical mistakes. It has helped me cut down on my comma overuse. I just worry they'll run out of material eventually ._.

[identity profile] twilightedge.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I also love some of the images she uses because one in particular sticks with me. Edwards smile glowed in the dark and she posted an image of Ross from Friends who had shiny teeth in the blacklight haha. I was thinking something along those lines too when I read the book.

I also like how she points out that they don't have anything in common. Mark also does that but I like how he points out that at times Meyer has a good sentence or two, but then she ruins it. o_o

Yeah, I'm actually pretty sick of the let's-all-mock-Twilight trend, but I like RwV because it's made me more aware of some of the grammatical and stylistic issues that show up in my own writing. (I frequently have to remind myself that sentences are not minivans.)

WEll, now I have a new tumblr to stalk. Thanks! =D

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I had to unfollow it. I like Twi-snarking as much as the next person--more, probably--but it was just kinda trying too hard at times. IMO.

[identity profile] luxis-lil.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
That tumblr is A+++.

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hm... if that Tumblr is the one I'm thinking of, I read through some of the posts, but it was kind of painful; the person was so freaking nitpicky. There's a difference between picking apart writing and pointing out errors and just straight-up ridiculing average or only slightly weird sentences.

I've never read Twilight so maybe I'm not getting the context but some of the examples they put up I'm just like, "...so?"

(Anonymous) 2011-11-09 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
So, no one would care about most of those nit picks if they'd happened in any other series. It gets old after a while. No book is free of awkward sentences.

This from someone who dislikes Twilight. Just, really, its writing quality is not that relevant. It's ultimately plain old boy candy. It's not bad for girls to have boy candy.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
This is me except with the Plinkett reviews of the Star Wars prequels.

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2011-11-09 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the heads up! I'm always looking for tumblrs that are cool but don't spam my dashboard with zillions of posts.
