This is what I immediately thought of. Maybe it's a member of his hatedom, hoping to stir up old wank. Or a creepy fangirl hoping this will drag him from the shadows and make him comment on how he wasn't the OP.

my friend called me a rice chaser for crushing on an asian guy in class. I became so self-conscious about it after that that I never pursued anything. :(

I'm an Asian female, have met tons of guys who have yellow fever and you sound exactly like one.

But what are your thoughts on yaoi?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
going by the use of "these" in "these japanese, korean, singaporean etc women", you're probably not asian yourself. as an asian woman who's always paranoid of yellow fever irl because of past experiences, i rather enjoy the fact that i'm able to come into fandom and call out the skeevy assholes when i see them. does that mean that i do it to every caucasian or whatever who happens to be into animu? no. that's moronic. but when i do, i do it because this is something we encounter all the time in real life, only it sounds stupid when you say it out loud. that's something you don't necessarily have to worry about as much in fandom, and it feels good to stop being objectified.

oops i accidentally posted this unanon. nobody saw!!!

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I can't think of "yellow fever" as anything but the truly horrific disease it is. Who's brilliantly well educated idea was it to name this... cause... after something that makes you bleed from your eyes and vomit black tar?

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Who's brilliantly well educated idea was it...

a guy or girl who was scorned by their crush who already liked some other dude/chick. Because clearly the crush was only infatuated with *their* love interest because of their Asian-ness. Not because the love interest actually chats with the crush and treats the crush like an intelligent human being. No, it has to be the Asian-ness.

That's my theory. Though I love the descriptors for black-tar vomit, I must admit I am quite impressed with the vivid imagery in just a few words.

For some reason, I'm finding it difficult to believe that everyone in Singapore liked you.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Possibly it's because you don't offer any reason to like them other than "they're east Asian."

But that's probably just me being well-meaning but paternalistically racist.

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
p. sure the only person using that racist term is you

because it's racist

also

dumbass

if somebody was only interested in dating white folks you'd have no trouble identifying them as racist

but if somebody shares your kink suddenly they're fine?

lol no

This will probably come across as argumentative and I don't mean it to, but I ask because I'm legit curious. I don't understand... why is it only "yellow fever" that's considered fetishization? If people say things like "I like black guys" or "I'm only attracted to Latina girls" or "I've never had a crush that wasn't white", people usually respond with, "Oh, well you can't help who you're attracted to; that doesn't make you racist as long as you're not rude about it." But it's considered fetishization if it's Asians.

I mean, if those people harrass Asian women, only like them for their looks, expect them to conform to stereotypes, think every Asian person looks like a K-pop model, or just in general act douchey it's one thing... but surely this isn't everyone who has a preference?

(FTR I don't have a racial preference at all and the concept of one is kind of confusing to me, but I don't get why people respond differently in this one case?)

I'm Singaporean, and it's equally stigmatized for women here to be seen with white partners. There's even a special term for them. SPGs.

I don't think it's okay to do date someone just because their Asian. (It always makes me uncomfortable when somebody says something like, "I only like asians/blacks/whites/etc., but that might be because I'm a mixed or something).

That being said, I've seen way too many people on this site take this too far turning it into an anti-mixed race sentiment. :(

(Anonymous) 2011-12-07 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, Asian people take advantage of and date white expats in Asain countries all the time, often to learn English (or as simple status symbols). I'm not sure what you're going for except proving that people from all races and creeds have the ability to fetishize other races and ultimately exploit and dehumanize them.

I don't know about things the other way around, but I hate it when I hear Asian guys calling girls who prefer foreign/white guys sluts. Like, if you're a good nice girl, you should find another Asian guy to settle down with because only slutty girls who want sex/money go for foreign guys? WUT? And then these guys whine about wanting casual sex. Way to have double standards.

But if you do like Asian girls just because they could fit into tiny cosplay outfits and look like teenage girls...ew, no.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2011-12-07 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's inherently racist or otherwise bigoted to be more attracted to one race or body type than another, but everything after your first sentence just sounds like you digging a giant racist hole, which just gets deeper and deeper with the black and white text at the bottom. Really? The only people who complain about fetishization of East Asian women are jealous Asian men and racist women? No. Wrong.
From what I can tell, most of the complaints about "yellow fever" come from East Asian women and women of East Asian descent who are sick of being fetishized, especially by white guys, especially those who have racist ideas about Asian women being subservient and doll-like. It sounds like instead of listening to even one complaint, you've just dismissed them all as jealous racists who couldn't possibly have anything worthy to say to you.

Because there's a lot of skeevy stuff going on.... I'm living in Korea now for a while, and like others have said, you get some nasty Westerners who are here for the fetish. At the same time, I've been warned to watch out for Korean guys because a whole bunch of them think that white girls are 'easy' and want them for the sex.

Since coming here, I've started thinking the Korean guys are pretty darn good-looking. But when I think about it, it's because many of them have many features I like in guys: I like them skinny, I like guys with nice hair (and I've never minded height, or lack thereof, much).
But that's not about them being Asian, it's about them having features I find attractive in general...
