(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)I look at it this way: I figure a lot of people that only enjoy the movie wouldn't really like the canon. People that like the show, I see them as more likely to appreciate the actual canon.
There really isn't a better, though I admit I pine for the days when Sherlock fandom was restricted just to the lit. X3

I more meant that there's much less connection to anything actually canon in the movie, especially in terms of characterization. In very broad, fuzzy terms it's relatable: eccentric genius with a loyal companion. But other than that pretty much every thing else is different/forgoed. The intricate plots, the most of the characterization. Sherlock BBC, I feel, tries a little harder to actually mirror the canon.
I'm not saying either is better, they're just very different.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)This is coming from someone that appreciates both the film and television series as a whole.

Me, I've been a Sherlockian for decades, and I love them both. And Granada. And the Russian series. And the Ronald Howard series. And for that matter the Geoffrey Whitehead... er, um, yup, as long as there's a decent Watson, I'm pretty much a fan!

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)The Granada series (for all its occasional cheesiness) knocks all other versions into a cocked hat, IMO.
The one, the only Sherlock Holmes worth a damn. Second place to Russian Holmes.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)It's not quite flawless to me because of the mix and match approach to the stories and the fact that Eastern Europe doesn't look anything like London (though they try hard) - plus they have some truly strange minor casting choices. But Solomin Watson: he pretty.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)I don't have qualms with either Watson's personality, though. I just find it a little funny that someone who's "tanned and thin" from Afghanistan would be a little, erm, Martin Freeman-esque. I love Martin Freeman, but I would never use "thin" to describe him.

I don't think recent Watsons have been done badly, but for some reason I always find like there's something missing in them.
To get all superficial here, one thing that endeared me to Sherlock BBC was they were actually relatively young. Sherlocks tend to be made so old in all adaptations. RDJ really isn't as bad as some when it comes to how old people cast Sherlock, but I do prefer the BBC for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 02:57 am (UTC)(link)I'm a little confused, he looks thin to me...

But like someone already said, they're completely defferent interpretations so... IDK, I can enjoy both of them without comapring them too much... or at all.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 12:34 am (UTC)(link)I've been a huge fan of Sherlock canon, before either the movies or the series came about. And guess what? I prefer the movies. And not because of shippiness or whatever. Sure, they might not be completely faithful but the films provide enough of the canon's 'groundedness' for me to appreciate it. Personally, I think some of the film's energy is more appropriate to some of Sherlock than the programme, but anyway.
Even though you don't seem aggressive, you seem to think people who like 'popcorn flicks' don't like reading and this comment smacks of condescension to me. Especially since you pine for just the literature. What difference does the adaptations make to the lit?

Lol no.
Some people just don't think the TV series is very good, tone of it aside.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 09:26 am (UTC)(link)i won't claim that the sherlock holmes movies are incredible pieces of cinema, but bbc!sherlock is hardly a more gritty and 'grounded' piece of media. heck, i'm a fan of the series and i still wouldn't call it any more than a fun detective drama.
