I like both of them for totally different reasons but I ship the Ritchie!Watson/Holmes way harder than BBC!Asexual!Holmes/Watson. To each their own tho, OP.

Ouch, the Reichenbach Fall is on, the bbc player keeps screwing up on me, I can't watch Sherlock live, omg are they going to kill him, and you're posting this?

Watch me curl into a ball of pain.

Are me?

I blame tumblr fangirls for my non interest in the series

(Anonymous) 2012-01-15 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrug* it's a halfway faithful adaptation against what is Holmes-mostly-in-name, light fun. I don't really see the comparision here. Some people like their popcorn entertainment, some like the more groundedness. Most just go in for the shippiness, and there it depends on what sort of dynamic you prefer.

I look at it this way: I figure a lot of people that only enjoy the movie wouldn't really like the canon. People that like the show, I see them as more likely to appreciate the actual canon.

There really isn't a better, though I admit I pine for the days when Sherlock fandom was restricted just to the lit. X3

Eh, I liked the stories of SH I've read, and I still prefer Wishbone!Sherlock or Basil!Sherlock. But I enjoy the movies tremendously because I go to the movies to be entertained and I find RDJ & JL extremely entertaining.

I agree, though it's sort of not really a fair comparison, in some ways, since they're such different media. I think my own personal issue is that RDJ/Jude Law have so much chemistry, it's like you're literally left on the edge of your seat during both movies wondering, "OMG, are they going to start making out?" It's that palpable. Whereas, on the other hand, the BBC Sherlock tells fantastic stories -- arguably better thought out and executed than the movies -- but the chemistry between John/Sherlock (Martin/Benedict) just isn't there. At least not in comparison to RDJ/JL.

So, then, I think it largely depends on what you're looking for and what sort of entertainment you want. Both are great in their own way, but if we're talking actual preferences here, then I definitely prefer Ritchie!verse!Sherlock Holmes to BBC!Sherlock.

I enjoy both in different ways. Sherlock feels more like a legit, dramatic adaptation. The movies feel more like a parody. A damn good parody but it's more entertainment than it is srs bsns. For me at least.

I just don't like BBC's Sherlock (the character). I prefer to watch a show with a main character I actually like and want to succeed, instead of one where, every time someone upstages them, I go "YES take that you bastard".

OMG I thought I was the only one! Everyone on my friends list and tumblr keeps going on about how amazing BBC!Sherlock is...but I just can't get into it. The mysteries are fun, but that's about the only thing I like about it. I'd much rather watch Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. being idiots together than have to sit through another episode of Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my god I could not agree with you more, OP. I understand that the BBC version is more "accurate", but it just isn't as much FUN.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
i'm glad i'm not the only one who feels this way. i enjoy the bbc's sherlock but it's not the incredible, amazing, true-to-the-books show that fandom says it is. hell, i'm not even a big fan of benedict cumberbatch's sherlock holmes. yes his voice is sexy, but imo he comes across as a personality-less drone. at least guy ritchie's sherlock holmes movies are fun and silly. it's like watching an awesome adventure movie like the mummy or indiana jones; full of fun characters, silly humor and lots of adventure.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
God this sibling rivalry between two parts of the fandom really is tiresome. I can only imagine how much the rest of the fandom (Granada or any of the hundred other versions, or for that matter those who stick with ACD) are rolling their eyes at it.

If you have a favorite that's fine. It really, truly is! You got lots of company! I'm a BBC fan and I love the new movies as well! I'll happily squee about the new movie with you.

But, Jesus, you don't have to be so passive aggressively smug about it.

I love them both equally, for entirely different reasons.

I've only just started reading the stories, so faithfulness to source material doesn't enter into my reasoning here.

I love the movies because I love the chemistry between RDJ & Jude Law. They're fun, they obviously enjoy each others company in real life, they're comfortable with each other & it shows on screen. This is Sherlock & John after they've known each other for years & have become soul mates & brothers.

I love the show because the stories are engaging & I love Sherlock's inability to be a 'normal' person. I love that he acts so smug & uncaring & cruel, then turns around & (unexpectedly) kisses Molly on the cheek in apology for being a cruel ass to her or chases after John & tells him he's his only friend. BBC!Sherlock is young & awkward & damaged & the relationship between him & John is still being tested (on his end anyway. I think John's love is pretty evident). Plus there's angst.

I'm in the SPN fandom. I love angst.

Same here. I can't put my finger on why, but I am close to bored with Sherlock by comparison. I admit it probably has a bit to do with my tired feelings about Moffat lately affecting my expectations, but although I've enjoyed this season so far I'm not hooked in that fangirly show-me-to-the-fic! way.

I've seen everyone all over Tumblr getting so emotional and filled with dread over the upcoming ep and it's honestly just silly to me. We all know he's not going to die. I wish I could be that invested in it, or as invested as I was in S1, but I'm just not. :/

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2012-01-16 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
I dislike so much about the BBC Sherlock. I don't get the hype, and if anything it seems to have gone downhill in quality. IDK.

The Ritchie films aren't perfect or high art, but they're a hell of a lot of fun, so I dig them.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-16 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just going to love all of the versions of holmes and watson. That's one of the awesome things about a character that's been reinterpreted so many times over - there's always something different to see in each version.

That's totally fine, man. The show is closer to my heart but I loved both movies and I totally get liking em better. Don't worry, you don't have to ~wish you liked the show more~. Why? If the movies are your baby, there's no problem, no OMG SHAME in it or anything. They're fun! and fast-paced and bantery and well-shot and RDJ is ALWAYS DELIGHTFUL and I've never liked Jude Law so much as I do watching him play Watson. s'all good!

(Martin Freeman omg COME INTO MY LOVIN' ARMS THOUGH ♥_________♥
But I swear, we can all get along!)

(Anonymous) 2012-01-17 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I agree... RDJ does such a fantastic take on Holmes, and he's a great actor- the way he acts with his body is wonderful and more subtle than Cucumber's wild flailing (the 'frightened Sherlock' scene in Hounds was way over the top).

He's athletic, watchful, mad, an asshole and loveable at the same time and you can really perceive why Watson stays with him. He's addicted. I enjoy the BBC version, but Holmes there seems to stay with Sherlock in a carer role, more than anything else. I much prefer the jolly romp through old London town, and it's far more masterful than the 'Hollywood faff' discredit people give to it rather than the over the top Moffat-thinks-he's-clever text overlays.
