Don't be nervous, just jump in! And use a beta/get construtctive criticism if you're worried. That's the best thing about writing; you can always try new things and get better, there's no ceiling. :)

I don't even read Homestuck, I am just flabbergasted that people apparently take offense to a guy defending himself.

Wow - I loved everything about the mashup. I like both songs on their own but I thought the way they combined them worked really well. And the scene from the show was good too.

But to each their own, I guess.

(Also, I love the way Naya sang the "don't forget me I begged" lines - sounded really passionate to me.)

Ok, this may be straying pretty far off-topic from the original secret, but this line really struck me:

"When someone gets diagnosed with any type of disorder later in life, it's typically a relief in the 'oh thank god there's a label for it' way."

I understand that many people feel this way, and that it can also be an enormous relief to have a name put to a problem you've always had. But I think it's also scary how much faith some people put in a diagnosis, especially as there isn't much scientific evidence for many mental illnesses - and no reliable way to diagnose them.

I have had five different diagnoses in the ten years since I first saw a mental health professional. If I had believed Professional No. #1, and gone through with his advised treatment, it would have affected my entire life in a very negative way.

Ugh, I don't even really know what I'm getting at, because it's complicated, and everyone has their own biases and experiences, but I do find it worrying how many people will just blindly trust that whatever the first medical professional that comes along has to tell them. Because once you've got a diagnosis, it changes your perception of yourself, too, and in a way, it can sometimes become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Probably because most of the Glee performances have been mediocre and/or shit lately that once they made a decent one people jump up and down screaming "Glee still has it!"

Glee lost it a long time ago imo

I'm just keeping the tradition alive. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

lol, i was not expecting to have to come this far down to find this comment haha

I thought that was albinoid?

Though interesingly, this would cover Roxy and Rose as well then.

Yeah but does anyone who is not an albino have red irises?

The fact that Dave always wears sunglasses is itself another clue, a lot of albinos need sunglasses all the time to protect their eyes from UV because there is no pigment in them. A lot of albinos also have low vision and need glasses to correct it, so.

I'm totally with you on this. I'm a native English speaker, but I've always been interested in foreign languages. I've studyed French, German, Spanish, and Japanese - with overlap, time-wise - and there were definitely times when I switched between languages without realizing it. Now that I'm near-fluent in Japanese, I'll sometimes find myself at a loss for words in English, but knowing just the right word in Japanese. Fortunately, I've more-or-less proved that I'm into Japanese for more than just animanga (reading books without pictures tends to get you there), so my friends understand that it's just a brain fart in the English-speaking portion of my brain, but people I don't know? Yeah, I get some mocking. Not much, but it's happened.

To the OP - as a Japanese major and fan of Japanese media, I understand. There will always be a few jerkwads out there who are just looking for reasons to criticize people, but most people are pretty understanding. If you don't act like a weeaboo, people won't think of you as one. I find that Japanese people tend to appreciate it when you show that you're knowledgeable about and interested in the culture about a whole (and willing to learn what you don't know). "I sincerely want to understand" comes across a lot better than "w00t anime!"

It may help to read or watch something that's completely unrelated to animanga. That way, if people start eyeballing you like they think you're a weeaboo, you can say - perfectly honestly - that you aren't into it just for the anime and manga, but you also like things like X novelist or Y drama. There's a lot of Japanese novels published in English, and a handful of dramas and movies available in English, too. It won't get the jerks off your back, but it will help "prove" to the more reasonable people that you're not a weeaboo.

good thing i actually started from the beginning and get the backstory instead of just reading the wiki.

(Anonymous) 2012-01-26 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Word.

I would literally give my left arm right now for something that would motivate me to finish my damn paper. I'm happy for you, OP, really. Not bitter at all.

There's one special letter that is becoming more and more obsolete anyway, and a couple of umlauts. It'll be a vacation after Japanese.

But Bro is Dirk. I mean they have different histories because it's post scratch but they're the same basic people so they'd have the same basic genetic inclinations, plus, if Roxy being a drunk stayed true after the scratch, I kind of think gay is a shoo-in, because alcoholism (like sexual orientation) may have a genetic component but if you don't have booze and stress in your life (post-birth environmental factors) you won't be alcoholic, whereas it appears to be highly likely that whatever it is that makes a person with a genetic predisposition to be gay or lesbian switch those genes on happens before you're two, if not before you're born.

the temptation is great, but I shall resist. Just know it's bad. And basically born of the idea that Rose needed junk in the trunk.

I totally agree w/you. "Talent" is nothing more than being interested in something and developing the skills to be good/excellent at it. I've read it takes a certain number of hours of practice (approx. 10,000) to learn to be good at something (http://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/on-luck-success-and-10000-hours.html for an overview). Most people take about 10 years to get their 10,000 hours in. I agree w/Dean Wesley Smith that it's not in-born and people who think so are wrong.

From DWS's site: "Or one I got the other day. “You have the talent to write fast.”

Well, when I started to get serious about fiction writing, it took me hours and hours to do one 250 word page. Then that page would be so poorly written and riddled with mistakes that it got tossed away more often than not. (Remember, I was working on a typewriter.) Yup, I was a “naturally talented” fast writer. NOT!

Thank heavens for me I came to the realization early on in my life that talent was only a measure of craft at a certain point in time and nothing more.
Yet, frighteningly, parents, teachers, and so many family and friends think that talent is FIXED. If you are talented when you are young in something, you should be for your entire life. Well, sadly, as many have discovered, it doesn’t work that way"

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Bullshit"? I disagree. :I

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh dear... I didn't want the alphabet gone! Just easier. ;_;

However, umlauts. Yes. :D

The fact that it's coming from someone dressed as Hitler kills it.

[identity profile] loracarol.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It's from the movie "The Great Dictator" that is a look at Hitler's rise to power and antisemitism before Hitler actually did any of those things. Charlie Chaplin is mocking/parodying/ironic-ing Hitler in this segment, and I would highly consider looking at the movie and actually seeing what the plot is, and where this fits into before passing judgement.

Also, it's Charlie Chaplin. He wore the Hitler mustache before Hitler made it uncool, and it's even thematically important.

Yep.

[identity profile] valenciapilgrim.livejournal.com 2012-01-26 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, it's funny I had the exact opposite reaction as the OP. I feel bad for loving this version more than the "real thing(s)". I mean, (as much as I LOVE Naya) Adele obviously has the superior voice (to either actress), and she wrote both songs, so...she should win, right? But I just can't get into the languid tempo of "Someone Like You". I'm a weird girl - I have a tough time loving ballads. I do love some, but uptempo is usually much more my thing, as it is in this case.

Also, I think I must have caught ADD from MTV like my parents said I would (btw, I'm referring to the 80's and early 90's when they used to play music videos, if there are any youngsters reading this), but I ADORE mash-ups! Why listen to one song at once WHEN I COULD BE LISTENING TO TWO??? It's like, so much more stimulation! I also kind of prefer the mash-up of Thriller Glee did to the original Thriller, and yes I understand that I will be crucified for sharing that, and I kind of believe that I deserve it but damn it, that's how I feel and I can't change it!

ANYWAYS, I also agree with everyone here who said Naya's delivery of "Don't forget me!" was immaculate perfection. LOVE IT.
