but uh, isn't hypersexuality the exact opposite of asexuality? So... shouldn't they not be included?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to speak for hypersexuals because I'm not one and therefore can't understand their struggles, but imo, places like AVEN should be for anyone outside of the norm w/r/t sex-drives, libido, amount of sexual attraction, etc. Obviously hypersexuals and asexuals have much different struggles and are perceived much differently in a sexual-normative society, but it would be downright unfair of us to reject them completely when they deal with the same sexual-normative society that we do. Hope that helps.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, firstly, "Hope that helps" is a really condescending way to end your comment.

Secondly, this is just ridiculous. Maybe I could understand if you were talking about sexual aromantics but hypersexuals are the complete opposite of asexuals. It's ridiculous to say they should be included under our umbrella.

DA

Why is it ridiculous? That's like saying it would be ridiculous for people within the asexual spectrum to be included under the queer umbrella :/

Discrimination doesn't sit right with me, no matter who's perpetuating it.

Lol, no. Asexuals are discriminated against for not indulging in sexual practises that are considered 'normal' - just like others on the LGBTQQIA spectrum. Hypersexuals? Perpetuate normative standards of sexuality, conforming to the hypersexual ideal that is emulated in all sorts of forms of media. They're not oppressed. They're the ideal that the rest of the world is aspiring to, and they are the reason asexuals - and other queer people! - are discriminated against.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Are you suggesting that everyone who isn't asexual is hypersexual?

I'm pretty sure there's a medium somewhere in there called normative society, and it's certainly not hypersexual. I've been harassed, driven out of groups and clubs because I was too sexual. Maybe the vast majority of the people I've interacted with my whole live have actually been aces, but if that's the case, there's a lot more of you than there are hypersexuals, and WE'RE the ones who are discriminated against while YOU are the norm, perpetuating normative sexual practices like no sex until you're in love (grey aces/demisexuals), no sex outside of marriage (aces), no cheating on your so (all aces) etc.

YOU are part of the problem.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, fuck you very much.

Seriously, are you actually suggesting that cheating is a good thing? You want cheating on one's spouse to be normative, encouraged behavior?

Not to mention, have you never heard of emotional cheating? Sexual intercourse isn't the only form of cheating out there. Do some research, you privileged ass.

Okay, now you're going a bit too far. I'm sure hypersexuals are oppressed, too, it's just not the same thing as what asexuals face.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard some compelling arguments that the oppression asexuals face is different from that faced by LGBTQs... so I don't know. Maybe it is the same, but that doesn't mean it's wrong?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hypersexuality can be caused by illnesses and is not necessarily a long-term thing. Hypersexuals are perfectly capable of being asexual. Hypersexuality can refer to a physical need for sex, even if they experience no sexual attraction.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Can you not perpetuate the idea that there's something wrong with hypersexuals and that we're "ill"?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Um excuse me, I'm hypersexual. And it's caused by an illness.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
If it's caused by illness you're not hypersexual. Being hypersexual is part of your identity.

Are you thinking of the term aromantic? Because asexual and hypersexual are antonyms, as far as I'm concerned.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Um.

What about "experience no sexual attraction" do you not understand.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
If you're hypersexual you are by definition experiencing sexual attraction.

Unless you're autosexual.

Are. You. Serious.

We are ALL trying to deal with a sexual-normative society. Both hypersexuals and asexuals are discriminated against because we don't match up with the sexual norm, opposites or not, we both struggle to live in this world and because of that, we should try harder to help each other out.

And it's really disgusting to see places that are supposed to be safe for the non-sexual-normative be actively hostile towards others because ~they aren't like us~. How can we talk about inclusiveness and acceptance if we're going to be this hypocritical when it comes to hypersexuals?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, fine, maybe they're both discriminated against but they face two completely different sets of issues.

Hypersexuals are too horny. Asexuals are not horny enough. They're both sexual minorities, but it's really disingenuous to lump them under the same umbrella and start saying hypersexuals are asexuals. They're not! They can't be! That goes entirely against the definition of asexuality.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
DA
Asexuality just means no sexual attraction. It's perfectly possible to physically need to have a whole lot of orgasms every day and still experience no sexual attraction to anyone. The fact that there is no media-representation of hypersexual asexuals, and you have no idea what it is, is proof enough that we're discriminated against.

NAYRT but hypersexuals may have no sex for an enormous array of reasons (not liking their sexual options, for example) and might not even desire sex at all, but as long as they experience sexual attraction to more people than is prescribed by sex-normative society, they're hypersexual. A hypersexual might even have less sex than, say, an asexual who's in a relationship with a sexual, and they might have to suffer the discrimination of being mistaken for asexual.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
That's called being celibate.

Claiming you're asexual just because you choose not to have sex, even though you really really want to, is really appropriative, to be honest.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
um, no. hypersexuals don't belong in ace spaces, end of story. maybe as allies but that's IT. if they're hetero hypersexuals then they can fuck off and if they're queer hypersexuals then they belong to lgbt spaces, not ace ones. seriously what he fuck is so hard about this.
