Katniss wasn't always a super likable character. But I thought she was pretty wonderfully constructed. So. Yeah. Idk. And I did like Peeta too. Idk. The secondary characters in general weren't well written because Katniss is a pretty self-centered narrator, I think. But I still think Katniss was a well constructed character even if she isn't always easy to like.

That is an excellent way to state it. Because yeah, Katniss was really frustrating and not particularly likable, but an wonderful and complete character just the same.

IA. I'm currently reading Catching Fire and while there are times where I'm like "Ugh, Katniss, why can't you be more likable?" at the same time that makes me weirdly happy? Like, it takes some guts to write a book series where the main character/narrator isn't the most likable of people. In fact, it's kind of the fact that she's not the most likable and the fact that she's nowhere close to perfect that makes me like her a lot as a main character.

And I'm not in the fandom and I haven't read reviews, but I love me some Peeta and I don't even care.

ia, one of the things I liked about Katniss is that she's not always likeable. Refreshing.

I disliked the series in general - bought Hunger Games out of curiosity and absolutely despised it (poor writing, majority of the characters were annoying/unlikeable, etc.). Now I won't even consider borrowing/downloading the others. "The next Harry Potter"? I think not.

Nostalgia goggles detected.

While JKR's writing did improve over time, her first books in particular were shit as far as writing goes. The creativity/world building was all it had going for it in the beginning. It's laughable to say that the first HP book was written anywhere near as well as the first book in THG.

And as unlikeable as Katniss was, at least she wasn't a Mary Sue like Harry.

The only real value in the Hunger Games is that you can give it as a sort of Twilight-methadone to young girls you know.

Peeta is just a stupid name. Makes me think of a pita bread or a special kid trying to say Peter but actualy saying PEETUH

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

[identity profile] gabrielsoboe.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Peeta sounds like the author accidentally hit an extra e when she was writing PETA.

[identity profile] three-sixth.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this was done purposely: a bread maker being named after a bread.

Yeah, I just always hear it as Peter with a really strong Boston/New England accent. Which is not at all appealing to me.

[identity profile] lit-wolf.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
If I ever get to meet the author, I will have to ask, "Okay, seriously, you named a baker Peeta... were you going for 'pita bread' on purpose? CONFESS!'

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I like that some of the names are that way. It's the distant future and a very different world, so their standards of what makes a nice sounding name would be different too. I bet our ancestors would think a lot of popular names of today are pretty ridiculous.

I'm just glad his name isn't Baguette.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, they name their children things like Marvel and Gloss and Cashmere and Glimmer. Peeta is tame in comparison.

So, I intend to read the Hunger Games, and while I saw that part of fandom adores Peeta, there also seem to be people who find his intense devotion towards Katniss annoying or hitting the Nice Guy thing hard. I'll probably read them either way eventually, but what do other people her think about it?

[identity profile] three-sixth.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Peeta doesn't have much characterization outside liking Katniss, to the point in the third book this is an especially major point. He doesn't really know her that well, everyone pressures her into a relationship with him, and he does make it awkward to be around since he doesn't hide the fact that he likes her. On the other hand, Peeta doesn't make it a secret and in the first book Peeta is tricked into thinking he won Katniss over. The writer did make it uncomfortably Nice Guy like.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-03-11 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just reading the books for the first time (in the middle of the second one), and while I adore Peeta for one reason or another my little sister REALLY doesn't like him. I think he's just really divisive. As for his devotion to Katniss, sometimes I wonder if part of why I like him so much is because I really am relating to that right now in my life, but it's not necessarily why I like him.

BAAW ANNOYING FLAWED FEMALE CHARACTER.
BAAW NICE GUY WHO WOULD MAKE A GREAT HOUSEWIFE BUT NOT MUCH ELSE.

We finally get a main character of a YA series that's not a huge Mary Sue and you want to complain? Yes, she was annoying. She actually had flaws and justified fears that made her a whiny mistrustful bitch. It's annoying to hear that constantly, but it's realistic for a fucking teen character in her situation.

Let me give you a little advice: once you start feeling like you know better than the author, stop reading. You're gaining nothing while circle-jerking to your own dislike of a popular thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree wholeheartedly with this one!! I'm in the process of reading the third book, and I frankly don't know if I can finish. I think Katniss as a character has completely derailed and devolved from the badass and awesome character she was in the first book to a whiny, annoying, pathetic character. I know that she had to become that because of all the horrible things that happened to her in the first two books, but OH MAN is she annoying!

I really liked Katniss, but Peeta annoyed me a whole lot. =/

[identity profile] immasammich.livejournal.com 2012-03-12 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you on Katniss, but I at least liked Peeta a little just for the sheer novelty of him being practically the only nice guy. Of course, he's an idiot and really lacks in character development. But gosh, by the end of the trilogy everyone becomes so horrible or dead that I have to hold onto the good ones. And yeah, I know the world they live in is so extreme and blah, blah, blah. I still hate almost every character. Katniss just gets the worst of it because we're always in her head and she's so selfish.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-12 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The only parts of fandom I've encountered so far just wet themselves over Peeta so it's kind of relieving to come here and see some people who weren't crazy about him. He was a nice guy for sure, but he got a bit... annoying. He cooked up this plot to help them both survive, but secretly pined after her the entire time, and then got massively upset when he discovered it was still an act for Katniss? What did he expect, that she'd fall for him after being forced into a relationship?

His love for Katniss also seemed to superficial. He didn't know much about her before he decided he was in love with her. It's like people claiming they're in love with a celebrity when all they know about the person is from gossip or watching them. And the guy was willing to sacrifice his life for that? It's a bit sad. I'm sure I'd get along well with him if he were real because he was a genuinely nice and well-intentioned person, but I have to say I couldn't stand reading his character towards the end.

I did like Katniss, though. She did get annoying, usually when trying to decide who she liked better. But she was flawed, and she was interesting.
