so bothering people about something they're not interested in (others at her: fandom), and bothering people about something they're not interested in (her at the OP: religion) is different in principle somehow?

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
ok apparently it wasn't obvious from my comment but i am comparing the girl's views, not op's

if op doesn't want to go to church or w/e then she should just tell her friend that??? she doesn't have to go

but comparing tv shows and games to somebody's RELIGION is fallacious, and it's only natural they're going to act differently

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
the point is "bothering people about something they're not interested in" no matter what it's about. if this girl hates it when other people do it to her about something, she should not do it to others about other things.

it's pretty clear from the secret that OP is not religious or perhaps not christian: "insists I go to church with her" as well as calling the girl a hypocrite

you could argue that the religious girl is doing it "for the sake of the friend" but you could also argue that people insist you join their fandoms "because you'll love it just try it they swear"

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
ok but the secret says the op thinks this girl is being a hypocrite because she complains about people trying to dog her into various fandoms, while she tries to get people to go to church with her.

this is comparing religion to a fandom, which ok maybe if you stretch it enough. but religion is still WAY DIFFERENT than other fandoms for the vast majority of people who are religious. in general, religion is cardinal to them. it's above everything else in their life.

so if op thinks her friend is a hypocrite because she wants to share something so DEEPLY IMPORTANT to her with the op while at the same time not enjoying people trying to sweep her into, say, game of thrones or some shit, then i think the op isn't really "getting" it. like you can argue all you want that they're the same thing no matter what because of the op's feelings but taking the girl's perspective into account is important in realising that op's thinking is flawed here.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
but you're assuming fandom isn't important to the people who are insistent about that. you say "lol fandom" as if fandom hasn't saved lives and has never held deeper meaning to anyone ever. maybe the people who want her to get into "lol game of thrones" are doing it because it really holds special meaning to them and they would like their friend here to join them and be happy

the girl's perspective is the whole point here. from the secret it seems that its HER that doesn't understand that other people might feel differently about things, and that to some people religion and fandom may hold the same level of disinterest or unimportance. the girl doesn't understand that the OP might just not be interested in her religion just like she might just not be interested in Game of Thrones because religion is important to EVERYONE AMIRITE?

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm sure it has but i am guesstimating that the majority of the people who stanned their fandom to this girl arent those kinds of people, given that it's not a super common thing, whereas almost everyone in any given religion is going to hold said religion above everything else in their lives

i see your point though, maybe the op could just like mention that to her friend

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
>almost everyone in any given religion is going to hold said religion above everything else in their lives

um

sorry but that's hilarious. ALMOST EVERYONE seriously really... dude. duuude. are you from a deeply religious area and oh god do you really believe that? look, I know that religious people are supposed to do that and that's ideal that religion aspires to, but the number of real people who think that way in practice.....

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm not religious

at the end of the day the vast majority of religious people, regardless of their ~hypocritical sin~ or w/e you're insinuating, would not hesitate to pick their god over everything else in their life

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
i didn't ask if you were religious, i asked if you lived in a sea of true believers because dude. most religious people are not like that at all. they're supposed to be, and the religion encourages them to be, but dude. no.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
you asked if i believed that and i was just assuming you were trying to ask me if i was religious so you could laugh in my face or w/e

i understand that a lot of religious people are hypocrites, especially conservative ones. but once again, if you gave those people a strict choice, they'd pick god/jesus/etc over sex/drugs/being assholes/etc. they may not always act christlike as they should but that doesn't conflict with what they place above all else when it comes down to it

If you claim to be religious, but you don't hold your gods/God above other things, then you're not really a believer at all, so this doesn't apply.

So I'd say that ALL religious people look at it like God > Everything Else.

Anyone who doesn't is probably not actually a religious person, just someone claiming to be.

Just like that whole, "You can go to church every Sunday but that doesn't make you a Christian" thing. Just saying you're religious doesn't mean you are.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
wait what.

if more religious people were like how you say they are, we wouldn't be having arguments over basic rights. It is very, very, very common for religious (I'm thinking of Christianity mostly, not too sure about other religions) people to put their religious beliefs over common sense and respect for others.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
yes. true. they didn't say common sense and respect for others though. they said everything else in their lives.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
... might surprise you, actually. My religious beliefs tend to be very important to me.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
they didn't say you. they said almost everyone. can you say the same of almost every religious person you know?

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but I am religious, and from what I'm seeing in the comments to this secret, there's a number of people who have the same opinion about this as I do.

Religious people in general tend to hold their religions in high regards. I don't try to pressure anyone into accepting my beliefs if they're not interested but for me, Darth Vader =/= Jesus.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
You are not everyone.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think anon is trying to say that while religion might be deeply important to the church girl, the church girl doesn't get that it's not deeply important to everyone else. Fandom people pushing what's important to them onto her is the same as her pushing what's important to her onto the OP, both scenarios with no regard to whether the target is interested or not.

(frozen comment)

[identity profile] ascend.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i get that but i don't see why that's really a big deal, if people don't want to go to church with her then they should say so. maybe she DOES understand it's not important to everyone else and was just offering, i don't think that inherently makes her a hypocrite

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Personally I read from the word "insist" in the secret that OP has already tried to say something and been ignored. I'd assume the girl has tried to say something to the fandom people who "insist" as well, for her to be complaining about it and all.

If the OP has tried to say something and the girl hasn't stopped, I'd call hypocrite. If OP hasn't said anything, then OP is in the wrong, yeah.

To a non-religious person, religion is a type of fandom. It's a story that a lot of people read and discuss and argue over and create derivative works of and whatnot. Obviously, to a religious person they're completely different, but to non-religious people, the Bible is nothing more than another written work.
