Oh, Gus. You're the best. Eat that popcorn, Gus.

i can't stop watching this and loling at his head dance.

Gus is made of win.

The "love triangle" was one of my favorite parts of the movie. I was really wary about it, too, because love triangles in YA stories tend to be awful.

I also think Team Peeta and Team Gale people miss the point: in an oppressive society, everything about your agency is taken away, including your role in choosing your own romantic partners. THG love triangle is like the anti-Twilight.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-28 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's pretty depressing that teenage romance is needed to drive home the point that you are stripped of all agency and are supervised 24/7. I'm not sure if I like what that could say about this generation of teens if they wouldn't necessarily recognise the latter as lack of freedom. =/

SPARTACUS!

Sorry, he just gives me lots of feelings...

[identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. It's like "doesn't most shipping involve narratives of sexytimes? I thought the sexist trope dictated that sex was something that was un-girly". I'm not sure if this is a troll secret or not.

And apparently, our thinking that this secret is nonsensical has annoyed some cowardly anon enough for them to go hide behind anonymous and take snipes. *Shrug*

(Anonymous) 2012-04-28 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
...is there seriously anyone who just wants to discuss gore?

Becuase I know a lot of people who are most interested in the politcs/ethics/themes, and a few people who are most interested in the romance, but absolutely no one who is just sitting there going "WHOO, CHILD MURDER!".

(Anonymous) 2012-04-28 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, actually, I've encountered several people who do.

[identity profile] joshua-glass.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I'm at the majority of films to see shit get blown up and to watch hot men eventually lose their shirts, because it must be in their contract or something that if they're in an action film, their clothes must be ragged by the end and the woman must run in slow motion at least once.

If I wanted intelligence I wouldn't be watching a movie that capitalizes on shit getting blown up and the aforementioned shirtlessness.

I would agree with this except I do apply it to people who prefer the morals and worldbuilding while turning their noses up at everyone who likes the shipping. What business of yours is it if someone else likes something for a different reason than you? Just like what you like, no need to get snotty about it. Not to mention hello, it's possible to care about both the ~deeper aspects of the series and the pairings too.

I don't really think about it as a sexism thing, but I'm annoyed by it too. The "Team Whoever" people at least look like they're having fun, while a good deal of the serious people complain more about the shippers than contribute interesting things. It's not like people can't think about the story AND have a shipping preference... and it's not like people are stupid if they'd rather ship things in this particular series than analyze the society. (And all of those people who talk about the Team Whoevers disdainfully, but then turn around and squee over Cinna and/or Finnick? Side-eying you forever. Cinna's the best, seriously, but squee is squee.)

Also hate: people who get annoyed at people who think the Games are an interesting thing to read about and the main draw of the books because ~violence as a spectacle is bad u guys~. really, i didn't know that

[identity profile] anonlulz.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So, basically, agree with me and my subjective logic, or I'll... judge you.

Fuck you. Just because I don't like the shipping doesn't mean I'm in it for the violence. What sort of shithead logic is that? And I'm sexist because I'm sick of romance? How about thinking the author is sexist for thinking that for the series to appeal to girls she needed to add in romance and love triangles?

But seriously, is no one in it for the plot/i>? The dystopian society? The conflicts? The plot twists? All I hear from the fandom is Peeta this and Gale that. Even though the romance is so unimportant compared to the rest of the plot.

I don't think this secret was aimed at people who don't want to focus on shipping so much as people who actively hate on shipping and shippers because romance is "stupid" while acting like the action and stuff are more legitimate things to discuss, and I think the OP makes a valid point.
Like, hate romantic comedies all you want, but don't try to tell me that explosion porn is inherently more intelligent. More enjoyable for you? Great! But don't get all snobby about one while acting like the other one is beneath you.

This is a confusing contradictory secret but, uh, yeah, no. You are just being judgy mcjudgerson. Of course I'm going to have a damn attitude about the love triangle when everyone brings it up and I don't give a shit over it. Suck it up and take your ridiculous assumptions with you.

Your note down the bottom invalidates your ridiculous example.

(sexist?! Missing the point of the books because I want to talk about something other than the half-hearted love triangle? Violence is deep and manly? the fuck are you on about)

Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I usually hate the 'Team X' because I really hate that this shit have to be some type or shipping war. I mean, can you just say 'I ship X/Y' wihtout the implication that Z/Y is a lesser ship?

What I am particularly annoyed this is forced and excessive focus on the love triangle in THG like it is a YA Romance title instead of a dystopia Fantasy novel by the fucking MEDIA. Fandom is one thing, the marketing of this love triangle pisses me off because THG's fandom is usually female. THAT's sexist.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
My problem is that it's not about the romance (at least not in book one), it's about survival. For most people in the book, the violence is the path to survival, particularly in the games. Katniss was different because her survival wasn't strictly based on violence.

Talking about the violence is no more out of place than talking about the romance. Why can't people talk more about the games instead of all the shipping BS? (And yes, it's BS. I love fluff as much as the next person, but it doesn't mean anything more than making your dolls play kissy-face. I'd much rather see the 73rd games, or something like that.)
