Nooooooo. Ugh. I love Carnivale, too. So, so much. I won't stop loving the show.

However, I'm still reconciling my love of the Enderverse v loathing of Orson Scott Card's personal politics.

Card writes stories that are so much bigger and more generous than he is - it's weird . . .

It's such a hard/not fun thing to reconcile. On the one hand I love Orson Scott Card's books, and Speaker for the Dead is one of my favorite novels ever. On the other hand, buying his books helps him support things I loathe. Ughhh. :(

I have that trouble with Card as well. But I can't stop loving the Enderverse just because of Card.

I know how you feel, OP. I'm a big fan of MST3k and rifftrax. I read recently that Mike Nelson was a hard-core conservative/Republican. I know that that's not a a bad thing, per se, but for me, personally, finding out someone identifies as conservative/Republican means that our beliefs are diametrically opposed to each other. And, you know, the Republican party isn't looking so great these days... what with them catering to fringe crazies. So, yeah. I didn't want to dig any deeper to find out if Mike was crazy Republican because I knew it would lessen my enjoyment of him and the show if he was. This is why I try to avoid finding out personal information on celebrities.

Haha, I hate this! I know it shouldn't matter and I shouldn't let it effect my enjoyment of the product, but it totally does. Same thing for Adam Baldwin and his characters. I loved Jayne (Firefly) and Casey (Chuck) but as soon as I found Baldwins online stuff I just cannot enjoy his characters in the same way.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-05 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason I don't have a problem with Adam is that his views seem pretty consistant with what I'd think his characters would be like. He can be tough to take (if you follow him on twitter) but he is entertaining and not a bit of fakery or deception about him. He is what he is. (Maybe he should play Popeye?)

I know this sort of stuff shouldn't matter, but it seeps into your brain and you just can't help it. It's the primary reason I can't get into Rizzoli and Isles - Angie Harmon is a complete idiot and I just can't separate the political nonsense she spouts from the show.

Aw, noooo.

...Although, I have to say...I've always been bugged that he refers to Iris as "crazier than a shithouse rat" in one interview I read with him (I don't see her that way at all), so it's a tiny bit comforting to know he's got wacky ideas across the board. But only a tiny bit! Come back to reality, Daniel Knauf!

I had tickets for a Megadeth concert and right after that Dave Mustaine said he supported Rick Santorum. I was actually going to hear one of the opening acts and didn't even know much about Megadeth but I was really pissed off. Turned out there was a mix-up and I couldn't go and that really didn't upset me in the end.

(Though as someone said at the time "He also voted to misspell the name of his own band.")

For some reason I'm not surprised. I didn't know, but I always found like there was something weirdly repressed about the series.

Just a taste of what conservative fangirls have to go through all the time. Differing political views are just a part of life. Eventually you learn to separate the good from the politics.

Ugh, my sympathies. I'm usually pretty good about interacting with people who believe differently than I do, but the last few years or so (and how awful people behave) have made that nearly impossible for me.

1 - wow. narrow minded much? what does his personal position have to do with the show? you'd probably be surprised by how many conservatives there are in show biz.

2 - Obama is a socialist. Big government running everything and redistribution of wealth. socialist.

i have this problem with people who make movies/shows/music/etc and insult my own views and/or are shitty people in general

it shouldn't matter that much but it's hard to look at somebody the same when you know they think so little of people who share your views, like wow was that actually necessary

Eh, it only bothers me when I start to see their political views seep through into their artistic vision. If they can leave well enough alone, it's all good.

For example, both Terry Goodkind and Kristen Britain are Libertarians. I'd be hard-pressed to think of a political ideology I disagree with more. But while Britain writes some pretty realistic generic fantasy with only the occasional inkling of bootstrapping, Goodkind has his characters build statues to defeat communism. I love Britain's books; won't touch Goodkind's with a ten foot pole.

That said, that's for political ideologies only. If someone is a racist, sexist, homophobe, or other form of hateful bigot, I won't spend a cent on any form of entertainment they make and/or products they produce.

I don't mind it when people who write things I like are conservative. I do mind when they're stupid. So in this case...oh dear.

Really? AWESOME. I wasn't even going to watch because it isn't my thing, but you've sold me on it, OP!
