I never listen to podfic because I tend to zone out. I suck at listening to people IRL because I've had to learn to tune obnoxiousness out...and things like audiobooks and podfic get caught in my obnoxious outside-noises filter.

But then again, nobody's ever podficed any of my fic, so there's that too.

My reading speed is pretty good and I just can't listen to podfic or audiobooks because they are so slow! I have no patience for that.

If someone were to ask about podficcing my stuff...hm, I don't know. Maybe I would say yes for the same reason as you, OP. But I still wouldn't listen, because in my head I hear my fic read in my own voice and somehow I can't imagine listening to them in someone else's. No danger of that happening, though, unless people have started to podfic 100 word drabbles now. *g*

Yeah, I hate podfic too. Nobody's ever asked to podfic a story of mine, though, and thank goodness--it would embarrass me forever.

There's no 'right' or 'wrong' feelings about podfic - and you certainly don't have to listen to them if you don't want to. It's good you say yes, because there are people who might not be able to enjoy fic otherwise, and having the podfic means they get to participate in fandom.

But nobody says you have to listen to any of it, or enjoy it.

You don't have to comment. I think the number of authors who do is pretty low, and in any case: podfic is something that a small subset of fandom does for their fellow podfic lovers. The extent of your involvement can end at "sure, you can record", and I think that a lot of podficcers prefer it that way.

I was fooled into thinking podfics are great by a set of Torchwood podfics read by an amazing fan who legit should get a job as an audio book reader. Those were the first podfics I listened to and I was genuinely amazed. Needless to say the rest of my podfic experiences were less than satisfying so I understand what you mean. It's just that if someone as great as that Torchwood fan would've asked to read my fic I would've been beside myself and listened to it forever. So it depends on the reader too.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-06-30 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I find just the idea of listenign to podfic uncomfortable and embarrassing. I don't know what I'd do if someone wanted to podfic something I wrote. Politeness dictates you say yes, but I would be so uncomfortable with the idea.

A lot of readers just aren't very good, unfortunately. Some are very good, though, and thus I'm glad to have podfics around.

I can understand not wanting to hear your work read aloud, though, anon. I hate hearing people read my stuff in classes, I can't imagine people recording it! I'd be happy to let them, just not to listen.

Just because you have the ok to record it doesn't mean you're a fan or listener if the stuff. Do most people actually assume that? Kind of like how an author can say they're cool with fanfic/fandom, but they won't go out of their way to check it out.

haha I'm in the minority here that likes podfic and audiobooks. It's good for me when my hands are busy with things (cooking, drawing, cleaning, etc.), but I don't want to zone out like a creepy fugue state where I don't remember how this cake got here, or what I frosted it with. As long as it's not porn in the background though. That's just awkward.

That said, I'm in love with myselfand the sound of my own voice, so I want to start podficcing soon. However, I'm not going to hold it against anyone that lets me mangle their work if they don't listen ♥

It's considerate of you to let them podfic anyway.

But it's wrong of you to lie about it. You only encourage them in a bad way.

Just be honest about it, it's not that hard "Podfic isn't my thing, but I won't stop you from doing it as long as you credit me as author" or whatever other terms you feel the need to set. But I think for your integrity, you just need to be honest: you don't care for it, you aren't going to listen to it. False blessings really shouldn't be given.

I'm with you OP. I find podfic odd. But I have a friend whose vision is now extremely diminished, and though she can read still if she turns up the brightness enough, it's much easier for her to hear it. So she likes podfic, even though she has some kind of talking thing-y on her computer.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
...How is it 'not right' to say no? Seriously, I've never run into someone flipping out because 'OMG! so-and-so didn't let me record their fic!'

Granted, my fandoms tend to just...not do podfic, so that might effect but...I don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, Podfic. SO MUCH SECOND HAND EMBARRASSMENT. Especially the porn. I cringe just thinking about it. I avoid it completely because it creeps me the fuck out. I think the way you're handling it, OP, is just fine. I would do the same tbh

I don't think there's any reason to lie about it! Podfic isn't for everyone. I don't listen to it because, as some other people have mentioned as well, I'm a fast reader and podfic is too slow for me. I'd be flattered if someone asked to record something of mine though! I'd certainly thank them for the compliment and for taking the time to make it available to the people who do like podfic. But I don't see much use in pretending I'd listened to it when I haven't. I guess for me it's similar to if someone asks if they can translate something of mine into another language. It's flattering and I'm happy for them to do it, but if reading fic in Japanese or French or whatever isn't usually my thing, there's no reason for me to read it. Same for podfic. I don't usually listen to it, so there's no reason for me to make an exception just because it's my fic (maybe especially because it's my fic - I don't like rereading things I wrote, I can't imagine the embarrassment of sitting there listening to someone else read it aloud).

(Anonymous) 2012-07-01 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why you can't just tell them that you don't listen to podfic...? It's kind of a love it or hate it thing, and if I was making a podfic I wouldn't be offended if the author didn't want to listen. I'm pretty picky about readers, too, so if someone did one for one of my fics and I would tell them up front that I might not listen to it but I would be sure to link it for other people.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2012-07-01 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Podfic is one of those YMMV things. I probably would politely say "No" if someone asked to record podfic of my fics (mostly because I don't feel they'd translate well into audio) and leave it at that.

There's no shame in saying 'No', after all. (Well, provided you're not a huge jerk about it, anyways)

Speaking as a podficcer - I have had people say no. I have had people completely ignore my request. I have also had people say yes and openly tell me that they aren't going to listen, some because it isn't their thing, some because listening to their story would make them uncomfortable. I had one author comment on my post to say that she was excited and flattered to have the story recorded but that she wouldn't listen because she didn't think her story was that good and would cringe hearing her words out loud.

It's all completely acceptable. If you want to say no, say no. If you want to say yes, say yes. No one is going to make you listen to it. I know an author who is not into podfic herself, but is fine with someone doing her stories. She says yes to the podficcer, and then she makes a post to let her followers know it's available and thanks the podficcer when it's done. I think that's a great way to do it.

Trust me. Podficcers have heard it all at one time or another.

I can't listen to podfic either. I find people's voices to be a distraction from the story.

Randomly, there is this one author who doesn't ever think to NOT bring up that she has 'podfic'. As she is also something of a friend but not enough for me to say STFU, what do I do?

This issue was addressed by [personal profile] sophinisba in her Note to authors who are not podfic fans (http://sophinisba.dreamwidth.org/368932.html). And the main point is: not everyone is into podfic, for various reasons, and that's OKAY. Well, it's okay as long as you refrain from making value judgements about it >:( But if you're not into podfic, don't pretend you are! It's only going to make things more awkward in the long run.

It's great that you give permission to podfic your work regardless, but from my (podficcer's) point of view, there is no need to play up your enjoyment of podfic or lie about listening to it. Most podficcers don't record for the writer. We do it for ourselves and for other podfic fans, who will genuinely enjoy it.

The meta post linked above has some good suggestions about what to do in the case you seem to find yourself in, including ideas about how to respond to podfic you don't intend to listen to. Podfic is a rec; it's someone who loved your story enough to want to spend hours working on it so that more fans could experience it, so that they could keep it with them. There are ways to say you appreciate a podficcer's interest and work without putting yourself in the awkward position of making up positive feedback. :)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmm... I understand from the author's POV not wanting to for someone to make a podfic out of their fic or at least be made to listen to podfics because of embarassment/something.

IDEK, I love podfics because I love fics a lot and sometimes I strain my eyes from reading too much fanfics and there are times it helps me to sleep.

I don't even have problems with porny podfic ones, though I actually most of the times download long plotty podfics that just happen to have one or two sex scenes so my focus wasn't really much on the porn at all. The only problems I have sometimes with podfics is when the reader has such an accent that I can hardly understand what they're saying especially since English is not my first language. /shrugs
