Thank fucking God I'm not the only one who feels this way. I find the author's attitude absolutely disgusting, and it baffles me that people are actually donating.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Because wanting to donate a few bucks to someone who provides you with free weekly entertainment is such a strange idea? The extra page is also an added bonus, but not necessarily the only inducement.

And why shouldn't the author make some money through donations? What's wrong with saying "here's the tip jar - when it's full, I'll post an extra page!"? Why shouldn't he make some money of the website?

So glad to see I'm not the only one! :D I took one look at the begging for donations and left in disgust.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Disgust? He's providing free weekly entertainment and having a "tip jar" with an incentive is disgusting?

What's the name of this comic?

Engaging the Enemy

(Anonymous) 2012-07-02 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
webcomics.yaoi911.com/ete

I'm not the OP, but I know this comic too and I completely agree with OP's sentiments.

(Should probably have know better to click on a website that advertised 'yaoi911')

I check into it every now and then but I sure as hell don't donate. And seriously, $400 for a page is fuckin' ridiculous. That's almost as much as my monthly rent.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Would you like it more if he did like a lot of other websites did and just had a donate button without the incentive of an extra page?

Also, he has to set the bar high enough that he doesn't end up "owing" more pages than he can put out.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if you know how much it costs to produce a single page of a comic from Marvel or DC but that it probably cheaper. I seriously just heard of this comic so I'm not defending it but the idea that comic artists can't offer an incentive for donation without people boohooing?

From reading the donation bar he's not withholding pages. He's just offering to post 2 instead of one if he hits his goal. If he doesn't you'll just have to wait a week.

The Young Protectors

I'm pretty sure there's a lot of guys that read this. And you don't think he's a gay man because only women can write fan service comics?

I've never heard of this, but anything that involves Liefeld-esque pouches can't be a good thing.

I actually like the art, but I kind of agree with you on the rest. I enjoyed the other comic he wrote, so I'll check out Young Protectors in a few months when there's actually some sort of plot present, but the money thing definitely leaves a bad aftertaste.

Oh, hey, this reminded me to check for an update. That redhead kid is really...uke-y. Like the last redhead kid by this artist.

Gotta be honest, if I found out people were silly enough to give me hundreds of dollars for a couple of drawings, I'd have a pencil in one hand and a donation plate in the other, too.

I think I wrote this in my sleep.

I keep getting more and more annoyed with each update. Time to let it go.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
If someone wants to provide me with free entertainment on a weekly basis, I'll give them a few bucks now and again to keep them in business, monthly budget allowing. How many webcomics do I read, and never send them money? How many vloggers do I watch, and never send them money? Lots of webcomics have tip jars or donation buttons, and provide perks like monthly wallpapers or buttons in return. I appreciate the option of being able to give money to someone providing me with entertainment. He doesn't demand it, he says "here's the donate bar, here's the PayPal button, donate if you'd like another page sooner than a week from now." And it's not a race, it steadily builds up. He doesn't say "gimme $400 dollars now or I stop updating! Muahahaha!"
He always thanks people who donate a lot (meaning more than $20.) He's polite in his discussions with fans, not arrogant or whiny at all. I see nothing wrong with this.

Are you perhaps resentful that you aren't making money doing something you love?

Have you read Artiface, anon? That was fantastic. I'm not sure where Young Protectors is going, they haven't left that alleyway yet, but I'm giving it a chance.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
*Artifice. Stupid auto-correct.

I don't know about this comic and can't obviously speak for the OP, but I so detest how often this argument pops up whenever someone criticizes someone famous for their skills.

I agree. People are happily donating week after week even though they know they could pay nothing and they'd still get updates. No one's forcing them to pay for extra pages. I wish I could do this with some of my favorite webcomics that move slowly.

I don't know how they think the art is bad either. Sure, this is a very indulgent webcomic, but I enjoy being indulged.

I agree that the writing and the artwork could use a little more improvement. There's something about the faces that bother me. The anatomy isn't too bad, although the exaggerated muscles throw me off every now and then. It's early yet, but the scene does drag. But I don't think it's horrible. I've seen a hell of a lot worse. My main issue is the possible age difference between the two characters which I can overlook, but it'll always be niggling me at the back of my mind.

But I disagree with the whole 'begging for money' issue. While I do get second hand embarrassment for that goal of $400, it's not like the site will shut itself down if it's never going to be met. The guy still updates consistently every week. I really don't know what that money would be used for, but you never know. It could be used to make the printed material, and I'm not sure how it is in the States, but that doesn't cheap here I'm from.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-03 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I have a webcomic, I also have a donation button and a bonus page incentive mark.

...But $400 is way too fucking much. The art isn't bad at all, but yaoi fans sure are easy to fleece.

Having just seen this for the first time... If that's awful art I guess I should call it quits.

What is something with "good art?"
