Why? They help bring more manga out of Japan. Well, right now they are on hiatus due to budget, but they're hoping to return to it, but still.

They don't treat the artists for their OC very well at all. And yeah, the thing with being a freelance artist is you're probably always going to be bending over for someone, but TokyoPop was one of the few companies I remember professors actively warning students away from.

Heck, even their "rising star" thing they did ages ago was basically a way to get original content for stupidly cheap.

I thought Tokyopop went out of business?

They did screw a bunch of new artists out of rights to their own manga, though. I remember hearing complaints back a few years ago on DA, but that's about all I know about them.

I get annoyed when Viz screws up their prints, like the early issues of Detective Conan with the pages out of order, personally.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-11 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
They did go out of business, technically. But Stu Levy, the head of the company, is basically an insane moron and now he keeps teasing people with "WELL MAYBE TOKYOPOP WILL COME BACK?! LET'S PRINT SOME RANDOM MANGA AND SEE HOW IT GOES LOL". He still keeps their Facebook active and seems to be flip-flopping on the idea of bringing his company back as a "print on demand" company...of course, the problem with this is that most of the titles TP owned that were actually GOOD have either been bought up by other publishers (for example, Dark Horse has bought up almost all of the old CLAMP properties they used to have)...or the artists who used to work with TP got so upset/angry with how TP handled their work that they'd probably never let them republish any of their books again in a million years. :/

They're still SORT OF in business, I guess. Idk, I still get a lot of emails from them because I signed up for their newsletter a billion years ago.

I guess it depends on the country. Tokyopop Germany is still running for now.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree so much with this. Right now, tokyopop is really screwing over the creator of Bizenghast by refusing to let her contract, but not giving her the budget she needs to create her comics. And there's nothing she can do about it. Tokyopop has done this with pretty much any continuing series they had in print. That way no company can publish a series they have, even if the series isn't finished yet, and even if the author doesn't want.

fuck them.
fuck them so hard.
I want to see comics that I love do well.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, THAT'S why the last volume of Bizenghast hasn't come out yet?!

DAMN YOU, TOKYOPOP!

(Anonymous) 2012-07-10 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, you do know that the last volume of Bizenghast is coming out, right? Tokyopop teamed up with Rightstuf Inc. and it's supposed to be coming out later this month.

so pissed off at what they did to Marty. And other original artists, but... Marty deserved so much better than the shit Tpop did to her.

Lol Tokyopop. There was this manga, I think it was called crescent moon, where they kept switching the gender of one of the characters (As far as I knew he was male) Calling him "her/she" a few times.

Can someone with more knowledge tell me how strongly the German Tokyopop is connected to the US one? Are they the exact same thing, or is the German publisher some kind of spin-off that was born from the first one but handles its own business now? After what I've hard of the US company, I don't really feel like buying anything by them again, so should I feel guilty about collecting several series published by the German Tokyopop?

I hate them for licensing things and then dropping them, like Ecole du Ciel (even though it did go on hiatus in Japan later)

Bluh, I know. I will never forgive them for dropping LIFE at volume 9. Or for picking up Ciel and then never releasing a single volume in English. 8| The German branch can stay, though.

All they need is better management. Sadly in this economy you just might get your wish op. So...win/win either way?

(Anonymous) 2012-07-11 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I desperately want someone, somewhere, to finish Mitsukazu Mihara's "The Embalmer".

Why I love that title, I do not know. What I do know is that I NEED IT. I was so incredibly in love with that series, and so choked when it got cut off after the fourth volume.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-12 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Going anon since I'm in the convention industry.
TokyoPop was supposed to present a panel at a conference for convention runners that was held prior to AX and apparently the guy didn't show and sent one of his employees who knew nothiiiiiiiiiing. I think TP is trying to still claim to be in the game, but they seem to not know what the hell they are doing.
A LOT of people weren't happy with how Sailor Moon was translated, so I'm not surprised to hear Takeuchi-sensei had those feelings nor surprised at their ethics as an employer/publisher.
TokyoPop in a lot of ways reminds of the debacle with ADV and how they died their inevitable death due to being managed by people who....let's just say some are pretty shady individuals bordering on creeper levels.

*out of the loop*
