F!S Anon Meme (the Seventh, and now on DW!)

Secrets, rants, opinions, anything you want to say about your fandom or a fandom or fandom in general, do it here! Anonymously, of course. Get it all off your chest.

Some ground rules:
1. Going anon is encouraged but not absolutely required (for those who struggle with captchas and stuff).
2. No autoplaying/autolooping embeds, or embeds that cover/stretch the screen.
3. No dropping personal info or IRL contact info, etc.

That's about it, though!

I'll be linking some general/general-fandom threads I see so people don't repost new threads with the same stuff.

Unpopular Ships
Obligatory Masturbation Thread
Fandoms you wish existed
How old are you?
What series have you always meant to watch/read/play/etc. but have never?
Time and location
Female-centric works
How do you feel about Tumblr?
Pet thread
Guilty pleasure thread
Favorite old shows
First fandom?

You know what

What the fuck does hipster even mean anymore?

Does it mean trying to be cool?
Does it mean being upper-middle class and acting like you're poor?
Does it mean wearing shitty clothes and liking vintage shit?

I hate this fucking term.

Hipster means trying your hardest to be a unique special snowflake. You don't like things for the same reason as the masses, you like them for your own super special unique reasons. You like things and fashion before they were popular or fashionable. You like things ironically and make fun of everyone who likes things genuinely. And you wear super skinny jeans.

Why do people feel the need to comment on the sexuality of others? All that should matter to you is what your own sexuality is.

People can identify as whatever think they are. They are the only ones who can say what their own sexuality is. Judging that just means your an ass and is pretty pointless.

lol ok probably going to get jumped on for this but

why does everything have to have a super-specific label

why can't we just ... be what we are

idg why we need to have a fancy name for it then yell at people for using the wrong name when they didn't even know that name existed

Re: Demisexual

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll admit that I lol when I see demisexuals complaining about being ~ignored~ by the LGBT and the straight community, but I don't really care what people label themselves

People who don't understand what the "-sexual" in hetero/homo/bi/pan/asexual even means and henceforth should not be allowed to make up words.

I think it's all in the way you use it. If you're just really into labels and find them helpful for you in establishing your identity, great, call yourself demisexual if you see fit. But it's not: 1) a sexual orientation 2) rare and special 3) something to act persecuted for. It's just a new word for a type of conditional attraction that plenty of normal people have always had.

My thoughts.

(Anonymous) 2012-07-29 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly think a lot of the reason there's so much backlash against the idea of demisexuality is because people don't take the time to listen to each other when they talk about it. So I'm going to share my take on things, and I invite others to read it and do the same.

I think what a lot of people don't understand is that people like me don't call ourselves demisexual because we want to feel ~special or ~unique. We do it because we want to feel normal. It makes us feel better to know that there are other people like us and that we aren't some kind of freaks stuck halfway between asexuality and sexuality. Every time demisexual wank comes up, there are always people saying that it doesn't need a specific word, because it's just the sexuality that women are supposed to have anyway. I'd argue that this isn't the case, because if it were, we wouldn't have the sense of alienation that causes us to seek alternate labels in the first place. (Also, there are in fact demisexuals who aren't women. Just saying.)

And yes, maybe "demisexual" isn't the best word for it. But it is the one that's come into popular use, and people are probably going to keep using it unless the asexual community decides to put its heads together and come up with a new one. For the time being, that's what we're stuck with, so you shouldn't disregard the idea just because the label is silly.

Finally, just like heterosexuality, homosexuality, and every other sexuality label, demisexuality has everything to do with who you're sexually attracted to and nothing to do with who you actually have sex with. I'm not sure why this seems to keep escaping people, but there you go.

i think demisexuality as a concept is real; however it gauges the amount of sex you're having (or your conditions for it) rather than your actual orientation and demisexuals aren't oppressed or in need of awareness so while i understand using it as a term i don't think it's accurate/appropriate to answer "demisexual" if someone asks you your orientation

it's kind of a dumb term to feel you "need" anyway when i imagine a majority of the population would thusly be ~demisexual (haven't met many sexualsexuals, who jump literally everybody they see)

eta: also i don't think demisexuality ever intended to be a slut-shaming term and it irritates me when people jump on identifying demisexuals because they are oh so obviously slut-shamers. separating yourself from more sexually active people is not inherently slut-shaming.

Not sure. When I was first describing my reluctance to sex/being itnerested in people but not being asexual, some people were all "you could be demisexual look it up!"

and I did, and the, er, 'check boxes' seem to fit me.

But I'm not keen on labelling and there seems to be a LOT of hate for demisexuals so I just go with "I'm slow to interest" or "I need to be friends first" since I'd really rather not be leapt on for being a hipster or claiming oppression or whatever.

So not sure.

Re: Demisexual

(Anonymous) 2012-07-31 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OK.
As someone who was part of the asexual community at one point, I just have this to say:

There are people who are asexual. No doubt about it. It's a thing that exists. Same for aromantics.
Asexuality, like other orientations, is a spectrum, and the degree to which someone is asexual varies from person to person. So it makes sense that you'd also get people who fall in the "gray" area on the spectrum, between being "sexual" and "asexual".

However - I think the amount of labels has become a bit annoying at this point. I can see how they'd be beneficial to some people, but for me, they're confusing, and I'm really damn tired of having to pick a label.

And I also think there are people identifying as asexual/demisexual who aren't. (Maybe because it's the "new" thing, maybe because they're exploring their identity, maybe they feel a need for community, etc.)
