Mpreg: y/n?

[personal profile] lunabee34 2012-08-31 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll admit it. I love mpreg. I have no shame. I love love love love love love it. I even like the totally ridiculous ones where the pregnant character gets every single pregnancy symptom ever and cries and cries while eating ice-cream topped with pickles. I especially love the angsty ones, the more angst the better.

So, FS, do you like mpreg? Why or why not? If why, link us to some awesome mpreg. I could always do with more mpreg in my life. LOL

I don't like it. I don't like the idea of pregnancy in general, so avoiding that tends to be one of the perks of being a slash fan. Also, the fact that it's never explained why this man is pregnant all of a sudden really bothers me.

I don't mind it if it's done well, fics rarely ever are written from the POV of a father of a child whether it's mpreg or not.

When it's just a man acting out a mess of female stereotypes LOL PREGNANT WIMMIN AMIRITE though, which it usually is, no thanks.

Personally, no, not keen on it. I have read one or two good ones, but it takes a spectacularly interesting premise to get me wanting to read mpreg.

Despite this, I did get into an mpreg big bang fic thing and am posting what I've got to my journal (though I missed the deadline for the BB). An idea hit, I went with it, and it's one of my favourite fics now.

I wish I had the links to those ones I have read. I wanna read them now :P

No, I usually hate it. Not the concept as such, but I hate them because the huge majority are completely OOC, angsty as hell or just plain stupid. In the rare cases that the writer manages to come up with an explanation for the mpreg and keep the characters somewhat recognizable, I've liked the fic (such as this http://miss-annthropic.livejournal.com/85169.html), but usually it's just assbabies with a side order of blubbing, ahoy.

I think this one is the only mpreg fic I liked, although that might be cause the mpreg is actually canon.

A good story is a good story, in my book. I've read a few that were pretty interesting. I liked reading the author's pseudo-science on how the pregnancy happened. The one I liked the best was about a robot reproducing, and reading the explanation of how it was possible and all those technical details about the birth were the best parts.

And then there's awesome things like this: http://oglaf.com/son-of-kronar/1/

I only like mpreg in very specific instances. Really the only ship I dig it with is Kirk/Spock, and that's because I feel the fic usually explains how it happened through Vulcan biology and such.

There was this one really great Dean/Cas mpreg fic where Cas' grace cracked and was the child, but he needed another to provide a part of their grace so the baby-angel wouldn't try to consume all of Cas' and cause both of them to die.
So since he's not a real human I'm ok with mpreg

I really only like it if it's dark or even non-consensual. I usually find the schmoopy premises throw me out of the stories before I start. A world just like ours only MEN HAVE BABIES, why? Why not write about women? A secret government agency conducting skeevy fertility experiments, on the other hand, that I get. (I also find that dark mpreg trots out fewer stereotypes about ~women's feelings~ although I get the impression that varies a lot by fandom.)

I don't understand it. There is so much mpreg out there, so obviously people love it.

I was in a fandom that had tons of mpreg fanfic, and then it turned out to be sort of canon.

I'm honestly not that bothered either way, I'm just up for absolutely anything so long as it's done well. Granted, it's usually not, but you could say the same thing about Highschool AUs.

Quite a few fics I've loved were mpreg, and out of those my favourite was really angsty and dark and basically alluded to the kid killing the man because men's bodies just ain't made to do that. I've no idea whether it did kill him or not because it never finished, but hey.

Yes, if done with a little logic in mind. Men don't just turn up preggers. Tell me why/how this could have happened, ffs.

I love all of Magic Rat's stories. She does Lord of the Rings, Final Fantasy 7, Dethklok, and Team Fortress 2. Plus original fic. http://www.winter-wood.net/ex-libris/

I really, really dislike mpreg; it squicks me out, although I don't judge people who like it. I also hate child/baby fics (unless it's part of canon), because I don't think having children or raising babies is romantic or makes a relationship more real~.
Tbh, I'm just not a fan of child-having/rearing fic in general, even if the pairing is het or f/f. I personally find it disappointing when going into a small fandom and seeing that half the fics are mpreg/pregnancy fic. (Wild Adapter is fandom like this that comes to mind)

It's not a theme I look for, but I'll read it if the story has other "features" that appeal to me.

When I'm looking for something to read, I'm usually looking for epically long, 100k+ fics. Mpreg fics tend to be long, in my experience, so that's why I usually end up reading them.

Here's a few I've read:

Accidentally in Love by CMM (Kirk/Spock; ST XI)

This is one of those fics that is just the right amount of fluff, angst and ridiculousness. I mean, it gets super ridiculous. Laughably so. But, it's endearing.  Featuring a pregnant Captain Kirk and happy endings for all the spares.

Every Judas Loved His Jesus by Croik (Loki/Steve)

I'll never stop reccing this. I love this fic. Not a typical mpreg fic, but angst ahoy.

Mpreg done right with a little humor and some plot can be a lot of fun. My fave is There in nine flat by khaleesian (http://www.khaleesian.com/therein9.html). The fandom is the Fast and Furious franchise and, contrary to expectations, it's the Vin Diesel character that's pregnant, not the pretty blond boy. Share my joy, folks. Vin Diesel! *g*

“In what universe does it look like I could fit under a fucking Impala? I mean, did you get the fucking memo? Did you see the sign saying WIDE LOAD on my ass?”

“I’ll take care of it.” Brian said quickly.

“You did this to me!” Dom pointed with the socket wrench and Brian backed up a few steps.

“Hey, let’s just go lie down for a while, have some juice…”

“I’m gonna kill you.”

“…Dominic…” Brian said this quickly, right before he ducked and ran.

sob, hopefully I won't sound mean saying this, but I hate mpreg. I hate it. I have a serious, severe squick toward it.

I'm not even sure WHY although when I think about it, I'm reminded of this episode in Sliders where one of the male characters got like...pregnant, somehow--some injection or something??--and the whole episode was one giant mpreg fanfic, basically, but then in the end he had the kid and I don't recall them explaining how the mechanics worked at all. It wasn't a c-section, it was a "natural" birth with like the kid coming out from underneath the hospital gown and everything. I was also like...IDK, 11? 12? at the time, maybe even younger, as I was watching this. So my brain was just going in circles just trying to figure out HOW, WHERE IS THE BABY COMING FROM? and for some reason, my brain didn't go "the butt?" my brain went "THE PENIS?" So then I started thinking about how much it would hurt to try to squeeze a baby out of a penis and OW OW OW OW OW OW OW I can't handle it, every time I just...have...that image in my head when I think about it, so yeah. I lose my ability to can at the thought of it.

...Actually, if you need a rec, OP, that's my rec to you. Check out that episode of Sliders if you can figure out what it was, you'd probably enjoy it. I think Sliders is even on Netflix now?

But yeah. Ow.

Also, the child was happy.
