Or non-fantasy YA!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any recommendations? I've tried some "grown up" YA but it never worked for me.

Patricia C. Wrede is considered "adult" fantasy? O_o

Well, seconding her!

Also adding Tamora Pierce because everyone should read Tamora pierce. I've been re-reading all her books recently, and falling in love again~

Hm, I've read a lot of those but always considered them YA. I'll look into the ones I haven't heard of though, thank you!!

No one should ever read Piers Anthony unless there is some kind of extenuating circumstance. Like, a gun to their head. There is so much creepy shit about women and sexuality in there, it is mind boggling. But a lot of the others are great! (I've never heard of Kristen Britain, but this seems like a good time to look her up!)

Thirding the "shit yes, Kristen Britain". Best new author in ages.

Also N.K. Jemisin.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it depends on what you like, obviously, because there's a ridiculous diversity within fantasy once you get outside post-Tolkien epic fantasy. Gene Wolfe is not all that similar to Seanan McGuire.

Um but some authors that I like a lot that people might like. Charles De Lint is really cool and writes a lot of contemporary fantasy based on folklore and folk music and stuff like that, his books have great relatable characters and interesting settings. His Newford books are really good; I think he's also written some YA fiction that I haven't read. Patricia McKillop writes very mythic, fairy-tale-esque fantasy. Hal Duncan wrote a really interesting series of books starting with Ink that's kind of... really hard to describe - it's essentially a story about a war between the Gods, but it also kind of is really concerned with the nature of stories and fiction and myth and fables and the connections between those things. It's really interesting, if not the easiest to read.

Also, Lisa Goldstein, Tim Powers, Susanna Clarke, AM Dellamonica, and Jo Walton are all really talented and worth reading. I could probably give you more direct recs if I knew what kind of thing you were into.

Also, everybody needs to read John Crowley's book Little, Big as soon as humanly possible.

recs for me?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-18 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going to chime in and take advantage of this topic to look for recs. I like books about ladies going on adventures. Among my favorites to re-read: Tamora Peirce's Tortall books, Mercedes Lackey Valdemar books, and Kristen Britain's Green Rider series.

Basically, ladies being awesome and having adventures with magic and travel and making friends. Any specific recs for me?

Marie Brennan, Carrie Vaughn (she does some YA too), Patricia Briggs. Those are my favourites anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Brandon Sanderson? I really enjoyed his Mistborn trilogy.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if you haven't also read 'The Way of Kings' yet, do so. Immediately. It consumed my life for a week (and gave me a new epic series to look forward to, yay), and I still think about it probably more than I should nearly two years after first reading it.

I'll recommend anything by Barbara Hambly.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
what the fuck is 'grown up' YA

YA is young adult. by definition it's not 'grown up'. it's young adult or it's adult.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
The 'Study' Series by Maria V Snyder seems to me to fit the description of 'grown up YA' very well - it's the same feel as YA fantasy, but with more adult themes. And however you classify them, they're awesome books.

Ditto 'Green Rider' by Kristen Britain.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-19 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, Jane Lindskold's Firekeeper books.

...But so much adult fantasy is guilty of the same thing.

Except the characters are adults.

and then theres bad sex in adult fantasy too and less bad sex in ya fantasy

yeah there is but the solution is to not read shitty adult fantasy

One of the nice things about fantasy is that it's a genre where it's really, really easy to tell things about a book by its cover (or more broadly its cover, its back-of-the-cover, its first couple pages). I feel like it's pretty easy to avoid a large swath of bad things.
