I don't write for Teen Wolf, but I feel the same way in fandoms where people write 10,000 fics about one slash paring. I find female and queer characters way more interesting than ones where people are slashing characters that aren't canonically queer.

Yes. This is why I love gen pack fic because it gets the chance to showcase some of the less utilized characters in fic. Also, Lydia and Danny are among my favorites (Isaac and Sheriff Stilinski being my other two favorites) and I love writing about them.

Also also: less Sterek please, fandom. More anyone else/anyone else. It's ridiculous.

Stiles/Danny is a good starter ship leading away from Stiles/Derek.

More threesomes! (and moresomes!)

More Boyd! More Erica!

I'm not in the fandom but tbh the canonically gay guy is not physically attractive to me. Therefore I would not write fic of him. It's that simple really.

*shrug* eh. people like to pretend that slashing automatically makes them queer-friendly somehow, but it's all in what appeal to them on whatever level -- sexual, visceral, narrative. And people just don't care as much about women and slashing characters that are actually canonically gay. tis a fact.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
secrets of all fandom: as much as everyone squawks about ~lack of queer representation~ canonically gay characters will ALWAYS be shipped less than canonically straight ones.

I can't answer for others, but personally:
Lydia: great character during season 1, but second season was mostly about her mutually abusive relationship with Jackson and how this was somehow true love that conquers all, which I found rather iffy.

Scott: too much Allison, Allison, Allison, so that is the first thing that always comes to my mind.

Danny: all right I guess, but hasn't been in all that many episodes, and I don't remember much chemistry with anyone else other Jackson.

Lydia gets a lot of attention from writers, I have no idea what you mean.

Scott is a) dumb; b) in a ridiculously boring established relationship with a really unlikable character that is constantly in the centre of his attention, anyone who wants to write about Scott has to write about Allison as well, and not everyone wants to do that; c) rather boring; and d) did I mention dumb? because he's dumb, and I mean it in a nice way, because he IS adorable, but also really, really dumb.

Danny is a minor character that got very little characterization and who hardly interacts with anyone cause he's mostly in the background somewhere. The fact that he's gay is really not enough to make him an interesting character.

TW writers choose to write about That One Slash Pairing because they're both popular characters who have a lot of chemistry, there's no need to make up characterization because they're both fleshed out and they're both important to the main plot of the show, so writers don't have to spend thousands of words bringing them in, like they'd have to do with Danny for example.

I agree about Lydia (but come on, boy/boy is much more popular than girl/girl) and Scott and don't get the appeal of Sterek at all, but Danny? That guy can't act to save his damn life. And I don't know where you're seeing this chemistry he supposedly has with people. He's barely in the episodes and doesn't really do anything so gay or not, it's not surprising that he isn't in fics as we don't even really know his personality.

That is so not my interpretation of the characters. Interesting.

[personal profile] sochitelya 2012-09-26 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The show would have to do more with them first.

Don't get me wrong, I love the show, I think it's a ton of fun and I marathoned the shit out of it, but now that I'm over the rabid 'new show!' high, I can see where there are some flaws.

Hopefully in S3, Lydia will kick both Jackson and Peter in the balls, and then be a snarky queen of awesome. Scott will STFU about Allison, who will serve a purpose other than as Scott's love interest and occasional side-switching pain in the ass. Danny will get more lines. Derek will grow up. Boyd and Erica will make out. And Isaac will look pretty. Also, moar Deaton, more Sheriff Stilinski, and moar Scott/Stiles bromance. And also violence, blood, angry balls of puppy dog eyes, etc.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Scott is boring, write about Boyd instead. From what little we know of him, he seems to actually have a brain, unlike Erica and Isaac (and unlike Scott).

Lydia and Danny, though... shipping aside, there really needs to be some fic addressing how nobody told Lydia anything during S2, and how Danny deserves better than to be Jackson's long-suffering BBC!Watson.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Because people aren't required to write what you want to read about, no matter how you try to guilt them into it or accuse them of being prejudiced?

Or even because sometimes people love characters but can't write them or have no desire to? (Lydia and Danny are two of my favorites but I CANNOT get their voices. I'd prefer to see them awesome in canon than ruin them with bad fic.)

Honestly, I'm fairly new to this fandom, but in other fandoms and most likely in this one, I never write fic that doesn't draw in a majority of the other characters. But the more people I see whining about the focus on Sterek/lack of other characters in fic, the more likely I am to ignore those characters out of spite.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm baffled by the lack of Scott/Stiles in this fandom. In almost any other fandom, the best friends are immediately and enormously slashed together, regardless of canon relationships. The fact that Scott and Stiles are such a rare pair leaves me scratching my head so hard. I seriously don't get it. There's so much there to work with! But nooooo. That interferes with Sterek and GOD FORBID anyone pair Stiles with anyone but Derek.

Danny's hardly in the show. He makes a brief appearance every now and then (usually related to Jackson), but we know very little about him other than than he's a hacker, he plays lacrosse, he's Jackson's best friend, and he's gay. I'm not sure where this chemistry thing you're talking about comes from.

And I'm sorry to all the bitter Scott fans - I get that it must be totally frustrating to have your favorite wholesale rejected by the fandom (I've been there) - but in this case I totally get it. *shrugs* Sorry. I don't hate Scott, but I do frequently want someone to give him a Gibbs headslap and tell him to get some perspective.

As far as Lydia goes.....I'll give you that. It's not a female-focused fandom. But fandom loves Lydia even though she may not be the central focus of the fic - in fact I would say Lydia's by far fandom's favorite female character. She's generally made out to be a complete badass, which I think is cool.

So, as someone who writes rare pairs and femslash in boyslash-dominated fandoms, you know how you encourage people to write those other characters?

By reviewing their damn fic, or leaving a kudo, or doing a rec list, or something that actually encourages the people who want to write about those characters! They're already in the shadow of some huge slash pairing. They would like to be noticed sometimes.

The more that people bitch about how "no one writes about these characters" the more that the people who do write about the characters, and get so much less attention, feel invisible. Like, okay, here I am writing, are you saying that I don't exist? Because plenty of people write about Lydia and Scott—there's piles of Scott/Isaac floating around—not to mention all the shouting about Stiles/Danny going on right now. So are you saying those people don't count, or that they'll only count if they produce as much fic as the piles of Sterek? I'm not sure that's fair to the people who ARE currently writing about Lydia, Scott and Danny.

Seriously, if more of the people who got mad at the slashers actually read, reviewed, rec'd the fic that they say they want, more people would probably write it.

(Note that I didn't even say "write it yourself" though of course you could do that, too.)

I like Sterek, I suppose, but I would love, as an anon above said, to see more anyone/anyone. This fandom is one of the special few where I like pretty much everyone and ship everyone with each other! These three are pretty high on my favorites list!

Lydia was one of my top favorites last season, and I still adore her, but a lot of this season had her as an object, I guess, more so than a subject - kind of abused all around. I would love to see her being all BAMF again, making use of her mad molotov skills to save the day, next season, rather than as JUST Jackson's girlfriend - though I do ship them. In fact, I love ALL the ladies of Teen Wolf!

Scott was, and still is to an extent, so single-mindedly focused on Allison that a lot of people just couldn't warm up to him, but his compassion appeals to me, and this compassion puts him and Allison at odds, of late, so it'd be great if fans gave him another chance. Although I'd still hope the writers would let him AND Allison branch out as individual characters, away from each other, more.

And Danny's great! I actually love Danny/Jackson, Danny/Isaac and Danny/Scott way more than I do Sterek, OP, and I'm holding out for maybe Danny/Isaac to become canon next season. I'd rather them than Sterek, but if only Sterek happens (I still have my doubts), no biggie - both would be good, too. ;D

i've read a total of two fics in this fandom and get the impression that 99% of fic in this fandom is stiles/derek--which i mean, coming from sherlock, i'd probably be hypocritical to raise an eyebrow at that. but i agree with you wholeheartedly despite my lack of experience with this fandom--teen wolf is one of the first fandoms to get me excited and inspired to write about the complex female characters and i'm sad that there's not more of it.

The only way to get more pairings and fic out there is to write them, write them interestingly, affectingly, and amusingly. Then more people will bandwagon on.

I think 90 percent of the reason why there is so much Sterek out there is because a couple of die hard shippers got out and showed that the pairing works in a way that caught people's attentions and excitement. They gave a blueprint on how that ship worked and made it easier for other writers to follow. Momentum happened and built, until there was enough fanon and excitement that it became low hanging fruit. Anyone going into the fandom knows that if they write a Sterek fic that has all the fanon and beloved tropes of another sterek fic, they'll get heaps of attention and kudos.

You can do that with Danny and Lydia and Scott. You just have to be willing to write and put the effort in to prove that they can be great characters to work with. Make a challenge and get a bunch of writers to write for it. Make a community. Write yourself, lots. Don't just complain.

Really, the thing that bugs me the most about "Sterek", is not so much the amount of focus they get in TW fandom (which, is a whole lot). It is the fact that people treat "Sterek" like it is a gay rights issue. NEWSFLASH: It's Not!!! Being a slash fangirl does *not* make that person an ally.

Danny isn't fun, like at all and that's because he doesn't appear much and I don't know of what chemistry you talk when the interaction he shows with other people is so tiny and he doesn't connect with other people who aren't jackson. I think the only thing that people seem to like Danny is because he is canonically gay, if he wasn't gay I think nobody would like him or pay much attention to him

Lydia is almost in every big fic being a badass, scott is always there too but one can hardly work with someone who is basically a potato whose sole purpose in life is be normal and that allison smiles to him. is't true there aren't much fics with them being the main character

is just, like, some of the others said above I just don't see it you know? I can't see danny/anyone who isn't jackson because, how? I don't know Danny. and personally I don't find him interesting at all. the only trait that people is always bringing to make him more written is "he is canonically gay, COME ON!!" like I know he is gay, so? it's like I want there to be greenberg/coach because coach it's always calling greenberg and that's it. I mean even greenberg is way funnier than Danny

Lydia is awesome and would work with anyone, but she doesn't call to me at all

I just like what I like because someone put it there and it called to me

I'm a hard sterek shipper and never thought of scott/stiles but in ao3 there was one fic about them and I thought woah maybe this is good AND IT WAS! but i cant bother to look for more because I have this problem that something has to be of interest to me to like. and I don't find scott or danny interesting so I hope next season someone makes scott grew danny independent of jackson or him being gay (I'm not saying I want him to be straight am just saying that a person doesn't need to be gay to be of interest), and lydia less jackson smitten and more her awesome self.
