Feelings like that are human, no matter how grown up you become, though. The only difference is that as we mature, we learn how to deal with them. I think the emotions people put into song still have some sort of meaning to them though, or they wouldn't resonate so deeply with people. The same goes for stories, if you think about it.

I think that sort of music gets looked down at because it relies on feelings, maybe more than on virtuosity - though I can't judge on their virtuosity, I'm not a musician. I'm pretty sure that they are at least apt if they manage to convey and create something that has this effect.

But people like different musics for different reasons, and "this music makes me feel that way" doesn't seem a less valid reason to me than "woah, Mr McVirtuosis plays 5362 notes per second on his guitar!".

I wish I could have my anti-music snob icon on Dreamwidth...

I went through a phase where Evanescence deeply spoke to my feelings, too, and I was already in my late twenties then. I'm not ashamed of that - they are part of my musical history now and their CDs still have their place on the shelf between ERA and Exilia. And yes, sometimes I still listen to my favourite Evanescence songs. :)

You do know this secret is completely contradictory right? I can't stand this kind of attitude, really. You're no better than your "hipster friends". You judge yourself for your music taste and you'd just as soon judge everyone else.

Evanescence are a GOOD BAND and make GOOD MUSIC in their own right. They're not "proper metal"? Ever thought that maybe they're not trying to be? No band is just for "whiny teenagers" and melodramatic whatever... It's judgemental asshats like you that try to "make" them that.

Kinda makes me wonder how "mature" you really have become by now.

All the music students I know (and basically 80% of the people I know are music students) are the least music-hipstery people out there. :S Anyway, there's no shame in liking "bad" music or "whiny teenager" music. Otherwise all music students would only listen to Beethoven symphonies and Wagner operas and NO POP MUSIC EVER DO YOU HEAR ME.

I still listen to Evanescence too. And I still think Bring Me To Life ~*totally represents my OTP*~

...To be fair, my OTP are a pair of dramatic emo teenagers.

I still listen to Evanescence too. I don't care what anyone thinks. I'll always like them. (And Linkin Park.)

And I think if you were a teenage girl between about 2000 and 2008, you have every right to enjoy Evanescence without anyone judging you even after you "grow up." We all went through that phase.

It's the exact same for me, with Korn.

I like a few songs from back in my angsty teenager years, even though they don't "speak to me" so much as I think they sound good and bring back some nostalgic feelings.
But not Evanescence.
Never could stand them, even when I thought too much eyeliner and stupid-looking Hot Topic pants made me "hardcore gothic".

But to each their own.

At least you grew up past the kind of whiney teenager I used to throw out of metal mp3 communities for being awful. Like the girl who refused to upload Nightwish when asked because it was "too personal" for her, or the real winner who got SO ANGRY with me because I told her not to post something that was against the rules. I hope she felt better after trivializing the deaths of millions to compare me to the Nazis!

I never related to their music, but I loved the heck out of it, and I still enjoy listening to it. Catchy music has no age limit.

ngl, it kind of baffles me when people are concerned about what others think about the music they listen to and enjoy. I've got plenty in my own music collection that would probably make people roll their eyes, but I give zero fucks because it's my music and I like it.

Also, I had a phase where Evanescence ~*spoke to my pain*~ but now I just enjoy them because they're fun to sing along with and attach to my most melodramatic OTPs.

I never went through that phase but I like their music. I think the lead singer did a good cover of Sally's Song from Nightmare Before Christmas.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of growing up is listening to the music you like and not caring what other people think.

I love Evanescence, it doesn't have anything to do with "speaking to me", I just like the music. I am over 30.

My Evanescence phase unfortunately coincided with my Twilight phase. It's a good thing I was a quiet kid or I would've probably been the most annoying obnoxious person ever, jesus.

I still like their songs now and then, but for the most part I have to skip whenever their songs come up because they bring up awfully embarrassing memories. Which is a shame because I really do think a lot of their stuff is genuinely pretty good.

+1 Ignore the haters, listen to what you like. People get too wrapped up with "you like WHAT?" However, that seems unnecessary because Evanescence was awesome and just what little teenage me needed. I think Evanescence was what a lot of little teenagers in our generation needed.

Evanescence was my gateway band that got me off Top 40 and into things I really enjoyed. I remember my mom did not approve. It was one of my few rebellious teenage moments.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
To be honest, your description of them makes you sound like you're a hipster (which would make sense, since you apparently hang out with hipsters).

SO. Let's go through this for just a second. You're a hipster who enjoys an "unacceptable" band. How many of your friends, do you think, also enjoy "unacceptable" bands and simply won't admit it for the same reasons that you won't? I'm willing to bet that the answer is, "all of them."

Thing is, growing up means that you stop giving a shit about petty bullshit like this. I like some music that's cheesy as hell. When I was a teenager, I never would've admitted it. I had an "image" to maintain and whatnot. But now? I'm like, "fuck it." And I also don't give a crap what other people like.

You're not a teenager anymore, OP, but your attitude indicates that you're still a kid.

I can't say I went through the same thing, since I discovered Evanescence just before they got popular and I was already in my early 20s, but I freely admit that I still like to listen to their music very so often (although for me personally, I didn't care much for The Open Door). I don't care that they're not "proper metal" or whatever...hell, I don't care what kind of band people call them. If something speaks to me, it speaks to me, critics be damned. Besides, I listen to all sorts of music genres. There's plenty of room for them too.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-20 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny, I just read an article on Cracked today that said musical tastes tend to solidify during adolescence. I didn't go digging to check their sources, but I think it's an interesting idea. It could explain your enduring appreciation of the band beyond simple nostalgia - or alternately, it's possible that despite what your music hipster friends might say, Evanescence does a really good job of wringing emotions out of their music even if they don't do it in the most ~artful and meaningful~ way!

Sometimes you just have to indulge.

I went through the same thing, just not with Evanescence. I went through a full-on metal-screamo-skulls-black-clothes phase. Looking back, god was I a douche. But that just means that my current taste in music covers a wide variety of genres. I think of it as a good thing, even if my friends who knew me then won't let me forget it. Everyone has that band they love that everyone else hates on. If they say they don't, they're lying. Especially if they're music students. They listen to some weird shit.

I see nothing wrong with still liking Evanescence. They've just taken on a new meaning for you, the way I see it. And Amy Lee's voice is super-pretty anyway. <3

Your friends sound annoying, tbh. I was basically the same--Fallen came out when I was 15 and it totally helped/indulged all my angsty feelings and middle school tragedies and all that, but that's why I still like it. No, I no longer hate the world and feel tragically misunderstood as much as I did then, but that album made me feel better back then and I'll always appreciate that. Besides, I just...like the songs. So whatever.

I like them too! And your friends are the ones that sound immature. Music snobs are pretty much the least mature people in the world. It reminds me of first graders who get into arguments when someone says they have a different favorite ice-cream.

Did I make this secret?
