TV Tropes has a very interesting thought about this - that the Fire Nation royal family had some sort of genetic mutation that had the males go insane at around a certain age.

Well...it made more sense how they wrote it, even though Iroh didn't seem to succumb to it, or was stopped somehow by the death of his son.

Well, TBH, Iroh was kind of messed up in his past even if we got good and wise Iroh by the time Aang was cracked out. He was writing with glee to his family about basically killing people and razing their homes to the ground in Zuko's flashback, and only realised how wrong it was when his own son died (it seems). I mean just because you're good to your own family doesn't make you a good PERSON. Of which Iroh certainly is a good example of this until, well it happened I guess and threw things into perspective for him.

Such a thing only wouldn't work on Ozai because he ultimately sees his children as tools at best to be discarded if they impede or unable to help him in his aspirations. So better than Ozai certainly but Iroh was still messed up probably from being home grown on all the propaganda or something.

Granted I'm not saying Iroh of the past was pure cackling evil, but good...? Nah. All he had was that he lacked that drive or desire to step on his own family and their hardships to make his own way.

also don't forget that azula went completely psycho and she's not a dude.

if you anything about the history of british royalty then you know they have a long line of people going completely batshit, and there's a lot of reasons for it. (which is also common for a lot of royalty apparently).

part of it has to do with incest and shit like using a lot of lead based makeup. so it's more than likely that coupled with being raised by psychotic people.

Welcome to determinism and true justice.

It's pretty chill here.

Better things to waste our time on then such a petty emotion as rage or vengeance, and we design the best social policy, and systems of law!

I've never watched this so I don't know the context of your secret, but I'm the same with judging (or not judging) people. I end up legit sobbing my heart out in debates about the death sentence because of it. It's ridiculous.

This is just my personal opinion, but I think a lot of people, the large majority of them, don't "mean" to be evil. Everyone thinks they're making the right decisions.

But that doesn't mean that they're not evil. Actions are probably a better judge than intentions overall. For example, I might say something accidentally bigoted without meaning to, and maybe my INTENT isn't to upset people, but that doesn't mean that I shouldn't apologize if I DO hurt someone. The people of the Fire Nation thought they were doing what was best for the world, but that doesn't mean that what they did was justified or right.

That being said I get really frustrated when people act like someone on the other side of a debate (a moral, political, religious issue...or fandom, even, whatever) paint the other side as being packed full of supervillains. It's never that simple.

There's nothing wrong with compassion as long as you're not stupid about it. (ie, putting children at risk) We heavily support prison reform here because there's not nearly enough done to rehabilitate and even just keep a good standard of mental health in prison (if that is possible, being caged, idk) - anyway, it's not wrong to wonder about WHY. If we knew WHY, we'd be closer to helping more people and stopping some of the more disastrous cycles.

Wait which scene is this?

Anyway, it was pretty heavily implied that Sozin was a well-intentioned extremist, as was Azulon. It was Ozai that went batshit crazy, and this he passed on to Azula because she was much closer to him (while Zuko was closer to his mother), and she spent her formative years with him while Zuko spent his with Iroh's.

And yeah, that is perhaps the worst part about evil and insanity - no one starts out that way, the world just turns them that way in the end.

I think it was a point in Harry Potter that while Voldemort's birth circumstances may have made him more susceptible to evil, even he could have turned out good and it was just his own experiences that turned out evil. (Not to mention Dumbledore could have just as easily turned to the dark side if it weren't for his own experiences turning him to the light side instead, and of course there's the Malfoys' gray morality issue).

That's...seriously the first time you've had this thought? Lol. What, you really used to think Hitler decided "you know what? I think I'm gonna be evil" one day? Did you really believe evil people were born as cackling Stewie Griffins right out of the womb?

No shit people don't "mean to be evil." You don't even have to hate people or pretend they don't have any good in them to accept they're acting evil now. Or to refuse to excuse them for being evil when they could choose to be good instead, because plenty of people who grow up with the exact same "upbringing" and "mental illness" don't become evil, or stop being evil and decide to become good again. Evil people are the ultimate definition of cowardice and weakness.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-15 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Actually a lot of sociopaths are born that way. Some came from good homes and were raised in a safe environment.

Do people mean to be evil? If they so choose, then yes they do. Those people may try to justify their actions, or claim that the world around them made them that way, but in the end you still have a choice.

Pretty much everyone here has already said what I could. Honestly, the only thing I want to point out is that you seem to be looking for concrete reasons. That works most of the time but not every time.

Sometimes there is no exact cause.

That's...probably a good thing, isn't it? Having some degree of compassion and not judging too much? That doesn't mean you excuse their harmful actions or think they don't deserve punishment, but I think it's always a good idea to remember that we're all humans. /pacifist

I know nothing about this fandom, but I just needed to say: I'm currently reading this book called How to Make A Serial Killer, by Christopher Berry-Dee and Steven Morris, and while I'm only a chapter in so far, it seems to be talking about exactly this sort of thing. It's basically exploring the idea of whether there's a genetic predisposition towards certain behaviours, and what sort of an environment suppresses/encourages such a predisposition. It's a fascinating read, and I'd definitely recommend it!

I can understand that you feel like that emotionally, but rationally: every single horrible person who lived was a baby at some point.

Also, kids aren't innocent. They're selfish, sadistic little bastards who like pulling wings off flies and are totally self-absorbed.

Personally, I actually find it interesting: how do you go from a "default" non-fucked up child to killer, sociopath, pathological con artist etc etc. I generally really enjoy finding out about the journey that made people into what they are.

I don't see why this "ruins" you. Wanting to see morality, and people, as strictly black and white can be appealing for a lot of people, but it's not realistic. Being able to see wrongdoers as human is a good thing, as long as recognizing them as human doesn't lead you to sympathize with them when they don't deserve sympathy.

There are some horrible people out there, and it's important to recognize how horrible they are. But most people have more depth to them than simply "Evil!"
