LoTRs? Is racist and sexist. Also its also not the pinnacle of writing. He spends too much time describing every fucking tree. But you know what even though I don't like it I respect YOUR right to like it. So why don't you be an adult and do the same for homestuck fans. And references to other works is actually a VERY VERY old practice going back the fucking Iliad. Referencing other works at the very basic level shows that the writer expects his readers to be smart enough to get certain references.
