Yeah, and the fact that there are several more swearwords that have to do with cis female anatomy than have to do with male or gender-neutral anatomy is totally not part of the context of what makes cunt a sexist swear at all, right?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
You sure about that? Off the top of my head, I can think of tons of swearwords referencing male anatomy but very few referencing female anatomy. Care to give me a list?

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Cunt
Twat
Pussy (more just a derogatory term than a swear, I guess)

hmmmmmm

maybe I should have said words that are inherently linked to women, I have a much longer list for that, huh.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Because you were wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
And yet, it is still true that there are far more insults/swears in the English language that are directly related to women than there are that directly relate to men.

:O

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
lol no

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Lol yes

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Such as? And which English language? You say you aren't American, but it's clear you're not a Brit either. You say "the English language", but English isn't one language.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Twat
Bitch
Cunt
Prissy
Nag
Witch
Whore
Slut
Pussy
Ho
Quim
Hooker
Butterface
etc, etc

and I'm Canadian FWIW

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
what on earth does Butterface mean? Is that a Canadian thing?

I'm English and your list is fascinating.

Twat is male here.
Cunt is mostly male but rarely an insult.
Prissy isn't something I've ever heard anyone say.
Nag is a female horse and nothing else. Or maybe a donkey if you keep them.
Witches are females and wizards are males and neither is a curse or insult.
Whore is a genderless action, as is flogging in the selling context (but it's male in all others).
Slut. Oh look, you finally got one!
Pussy is a cat (either gender) or very rarely anatomy. It isn't a swear or insult.
Ho is American rap and anyone using it here would be locked up.
Quim is another one of those words I have never encountered before now.
Hooker is an American cop show word that no one uses here.
Butterface is...really? This is a word I first encountered on this comm within the last few months and it's always been used to describe a man. Specifically, I've only ever seen it used to describe Jeremy Renner and Daniel Craig.

Well, I won't call someone butterface in Canada as long as you stop crying about people saying cunt in Glasgow. Deal?

dick
prick
cock
wanker
bollocks

So what? What's your point? Words have origins. Big whoop. No-one in the UK calling someone a cunt, be it with either hostile or affectionate intent, is saying "hey, you resemble the most disgusting thing there is, which is a woman's genitals" any more than they are saying "comparing you to a penis is the worst thing I can think of" when they call someone a dickhead.

I'm sorry if you're squeamish about certain swearwords, but they simply do not carry the same weight in this country as they clearly do in yours.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, look, in my country 'bitch' is not considered a particularly vile swear. It's probably as common as 'cunt' is where you are.

But it's still sexist, because the entire reason it's an insult is because it's comparing someone to a female dog (and also because it's frequently used against women who are 'too aggressive' - ie not deferential or submissive enough towad men - to 'put them in their place). If the insult wasn't in comparing someone to a female dog it would just be 'dog'. Which it isn't.

When the swear is tied into its attachment to women and female-ness, and when there are dozens of other swears that are swears because of their attachment to women/female-ness, it's a sexist swear. Regardless of how big of a 'shock' or how taboo it is in casual conversation.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry - to explain, when the context is that there are dozens of other swears with that same connection to women, and which have frequently been used to keep women down, it's a sexist term and part of the sexism that is prevalent in the English language.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I love that you use context to validate your point and claim that context is irrelevant in all other points.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I love how I'm not actually doing that at all?

What?

Explain to me how I'm doing that.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
DA - I thought the same thing then realised you aren't the OMG IT'S SEXIST anon.

the entire reason it's an insult is because it's comparing someone to a female dog

Actually, to a lot of people, "bitch" is an insult because they were taught that it's an insult. Really. Very few people are deliberate about the female dog comparison.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
exactly

when I tell people a bitch is a female dog, they give me weird looks and say "lol k" and ignore me

or they laugh and say I'm taking the word too literally

which means they weren't thinking about female dogs when they said it

(Anonymous) 2012-11-22 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
And? What the fuck does that prove?

Just because they're not literally thinking "female dog" every time they say it doesn't erase the meaning and the context of that meaning!

Oh my god, how fucking wilfully simple-minded and ignorant do you have to be to think what you've just said is a good argument? AUGH.

I want to think everyone in this thread arguing for why sexist words aren't sexist is a troll, but unfortunately I am all to aware that this is the attitude most people in the real world share. Which is why sexism is still so very prevalent. Woohoo.

You Win.
